Drinan Could Win Cap
Thursday, 6th Jun 2019 09:20

Blues striker Aaron Drinan could win his third Irish U21s cap this evening when his side take on Mexico in their second game at the Maurice Revello Toulon Tournament.

Drinan, who is on loan back at his former club Waterford, won his second cap as a late sub in Monday's 4-1 thrashing of China in their opening fixture. Ireland face Bahrain in their final group game on Sunday.

The 21-year-old, who has scored seven times in the League of Ireland with the season running through the summer, is contracted to Town until the summer of 2021.

Meanwhile, former Blues manager Mick McCarthy has revealed that it was Town U23s coach Gerard Nash who recommended Bohemians goalkeeper James Talbot, 22, who is in his squad for the Euro 2020 qualifiers in Denmark on Friday and at home to Gibraltar on Monday along with Blues midfielder Alan Judge.

“It was Gerard Nash who works at Ipswich. He's a nice lad, a nice fella,” McCarthy said. “Wherever he's been, he just goes out and watches games.

“I asked everybody who goes out and watches games, 'If you see any of our lads, give me a heads-up'.

"That's what he did. He's a really good coach and has a particularly good eye.

“He said, ‘I hadn’t seen anyone who will get in your squad as an outfield player yet but the one that stuck out for me was James Talbot’.”
