Town and Pompey Linked With Motherwell Midfielder
Monday, 3rd Jun 2019 13:33

Town and Portsmouth are reported to be showing interest in Motherwell’s Spanish midfielder Alex Rodriguez Gorrin, who is out of contract at the end of the month.

According to Football Insider, the 25-year-old is set to leave Fir Park on a free transfer after one season at the Scottish Premiership side with the Blues and Pompey both keen.

Rodriguez Gorrin, who impressed during 2018/19 in a deep central midfield role, was with local side Tenerife as a youngster before joining Sunderland’s youth set-up.

Having failed to make a first-team breakthrough at the Stadium of Light, spells in New Zealand with the Wellington Phoenix, in Portugal with Boavista and in Romania with Spesi Sfantu Gheorghe followed before his move to Scotland last summer.

In total, Rodriguez Gorrin (pictured above in his days with the Black Cats) made 17 starts and seven sub appearances for Motherwell without scoring and achieved the highest number of interceptions, 9.75 per game, in Europe during 2018/19.

Previously he has been linked with a move to the Championship with Blackburn, Millwall, Wigan and Bristol City all said to be interested.

his stats look impressive albeit not in the hardest league in the world but what do we expect now we are in league one! that said, the scottish premier league gets a lot of stick but can it really be that much worse than league one? i can't say as i don't watch any of it these days. once upon a time it was a very high standard and i know those days are long gone, but surely celtic or rangers would be streets ahead in league one (watch the sunderland documentary on netflix and see what celtic do to them at the start at the stadium of light - and that was when they were still in the championship). and both of the glasgow teams have slip ups over the season. how many teams from league one in england would turn over celtic? not very many i don't think!
can't comment too much on this player as never seen him play but i wouldn't dismiss him completely out of hand without seeing him play first and if pompey are interested that's not a bad sign as they've made some good signings in recent years.

Central midfield is the last area in which we need players; a centre-back and a goal scorer are far more important.

Amazed that, as a Spanish lad, he doesn't have a moustache. Most grow them out of respect for their mothers!😀

Wouldn't get over-exited re this link. Hopefully PL and his team are casting their nets widely, with loads of fish being caught, but the majority thrown back or slipping through. No doubt more to come, and keeps us interested in the real news drought that normally happens around this time. Would trust PL's judgement, though, should anything come of it!

Out of contact...well there's a surprise! Other than Sunderland looks like he's played for some big clubs NOT!

Other than that don't know a lot about him other than what I've read but I'm sure there will be plenty of posters that do, that always seems to be the case whatever the player...

Interesting, but would be cover for Skuse, all other midfield options well covered. Can't help though liking his basic footballing skills and he certainly looks immensely comfortable on the ball. Might come in handy when Teddy, Tristan and Skuse pick up niggles all of whom spend time on the sidelines as well as Nolan and of course no Mr Huws yet in sight.

Do we need another defence minded central midfielder?

Judging by some of the comments on here Jas, I think all we need is love.

Waghorn and Garner were not bad acquisitions from the Scottish league for little money. People on here need to be realistic. Few players will aspire to join a league 1 team, we are going to spend (next to) nothing as a transfer fee and I doubt our wage structure is even as much as Motherwell. This is probably all paper talk / us linked with anyone free and I agree that a CDM is probably not our most urgent position to strengthen. But jeez, people need a reality check on what we'll recruit this summer

So we're looking at the Wellington Phoenix for players now?

Get in Sarpreet Singh and Liberato Cacace!

Although they'd probably both cost more than we can afford after the U-20 World Cup. Which isn't saying much based on our recent history of paying fees.

When we were in the championship we thought division one now we are in division one we are thinking division two can't wait for next season.

Didn't set the world on fire at the Wellington Phoenix. One player
from the Phoenix who would have been worth a look was Roy Krishna
whose pace and finishing would be at least League 1 standard.....

KiwiBlue2 added 02:05 - Jun 6
and as an earlier poster has mentioned Liberato Caccace and Sarpreet Singh
would definitely be worth a look, particularly the former, given Town's situation at left-back.........
