Downes Withdrawn From England U20s Toulon Squad
Tuesday, 28th May 2019 11:33

Blues midfielder Flynn Downes was withdrawn from the England U20s squad for the Maurice Revello Tournament in Toulon next month, TWTD understands.

Downes, who has been capped twice at U20s level, was initially named in the squad prior to its public announcement this morning but was pulled out by Town to allow the 20-year-old to recover from an ongoing minor injury over the summer.

We understand Andre Dozzell is currently on the standby list, while ex-Blues loanee Trevoh Chalobah is in Paul Simpson’s party, who face Japan, Portugal and Chile in the group stages.

England U20s: Ellery Balcombe (Brentford), Nathan Trott (West Ham United), Jayden Bogle (Derby County), Trevoh Chalobah (Chelsea), Marc Guehi (Chelsea), Reece James (Chelsea), Max Lowe (Derby County), Tom Pearce (Leeds United), Steven Sessegnon (Fulham), Easah Suliman (Aston Villa), Sam Field (West Bromwich Albion), Conor Gallagher (Chelsea), Dwight McNeil (Burnley), Josh Sims (Southampton), Joe Willock (Arsenal), Kyle Edwards (West Bromwich Albion), Eberechi Eze (Queens Park Rangers), George Hirst (OH Leuven), Danny Loader (Reading), Eddie Nketiah (Arsenal), Marcus Tavernier (Middlesbrough).

Flynn finished the season as our most complete midfielder. He also has the drive, tenacity and experience to deal with League 1. He might be 'young' but for me, if his development continues, he could well be among the first names on the team sheet come August.

Get well soon Flynn. Plenty of time for more international honours in the U21s and maybe beyond.

Nice to play for your country but good to see the club looking after the welfare of it's players. I agree Downes is a key player for us going forward, and as it's been said he will get plenty more opportunities I'm sure.

As Mick Mills says this lad can play the anchor man midfield role. Can definitely replace our premiership class no8 who no doubt will get poached now we have been relegated !!!

Not fair to post this comment on the article about Downes, but watching the quality of the players in the playoff final yesterday you can see why we were relegated.

Lambert knows this of course.

I am quite looking forward to the *concept* of Norwood as he is hungry, his interview in The Times showed a ruthlessness our players tend to lack. We need a few 'men' to balance out the 'boys'.

The player I was most excited about in the last 5 years was Waghorn, which proved to be correct. that's the calibre of player we need to benchmark to, everywhere in the field.

Good call. Need him fully fit for next season. One of the youngsters who should be starting regularly.

It's certainly true that every fan has an opinion and mine is clearly far different than some on here... I've played myself at a reasonable level and indeed managed Army level sides and as a season ticket holder for several years can certainly say that I have seen sufficient games to have my own say....

I do not rate Flynn and whilst some my not agree with me, his temperament is at times seriously in question. To say he finished the season as our most complete midfielder is probably the strangest comment of them all! He is a mile behind Bishop on an average day and whilst Dozzell needs beefing 🥩 up with a few steaks over the summer his eye for a laser pass to cut a defence open is at times a throw back to his Dads better games. Teddy (if (and it's a big if) he can stay fit) should control games and I'd pay any gate price to see him and Huws cut loose in an all out attack pairing against even lower Championship club sides. The fact that both are made of glass in a league that will have its fair share of ‘pub side brawling' midfielders is the biggest concern.

But as I said before, this beautiful game is all about opinions and ar*eholes, ie.... we all have one..
