Norwood Coy on Future as Tranmere Secure Promotion to League One
Saturday, 25th May 2019 21:45

Blues target James Norwood wouldn’t comment on his future following Tranmere's 1-0 after-extra-time victory over Newport County in the League Two play-off final this afternoon.

"I'm not too sure, we've only just played the final, so it's not for me to comment," the 28-year-old striker (pictured centre above), who is out of contract at the end of June, told Sky Sports when asked about his future following the game.

"I'm going to enjoy tonight, enjoy the next week when we all fly off on holiday and see if I remember the week that’s just gone.”

Norwood, who scored 32 times in all competitions this season, has been linked with the Blues for some months and we understand the deal which would make him Town’s second signing of the summer is a long way down the line and, with the play-offs now over, is expected to be concluded, presumably once the striker has returned from the Tranmere squad’s post-season break.

However, Rovers haven’t yet given up hope of keeping the League Two Player of the Year at Prenton Park for their return to League One.

“I’d clearly love to have James with us, he’s been with us for four years, we extended his contract two years ago," Tranmere chairman Mark Palios said.

"He's at the age he's at, he wants to try himself at a higher level, but we're at a higher level now so that should enter into the factors in the negotiations.

"James and I, I think, have a good relationship. We made an offer, we talked to him, then we just sort of agreed to put it to bed in terms of getting on with the job in hand, which was to get out of this league, which has now been done, so we'll start to talk Monday morning again."

Everyone said the same about judge and he signed. Give it a chance to happen if not we move on. We can't just have one target man on our radar. This guy was playing no league last year so a big step up and risk for whoever may sign him.

He'll either stay at Tranmere with an improved new contract or somebody else probably a Championship side will come in for him...that's my bets.

As someone who lives on the Wirral.Tranmere are a very well run club, nice ground with a potential of 15k home support if they continue their rise back up the leagues. In that sense,a smaller club than ITFC.However,a caring Owner and a very good Manager,Tranmere, with some funding, are a very attractive club and i still think it's Tranmere or Salford and i would be surprised if Norwood moves to Ipswich.

Swansea will offer a way bigger salary, and Championship football, we just cannot compete!!
Shame but reality speaks, time to move on i,m afraid!!

Given his age temperament and the fact only done it at league 2 not the biggest lost.

Whatever - if he signs great but he is still bit of a gamble (who isn't). Fantastic season but he has spent more time in the National League than almost anywhere else and his highest League to date is League 2 apart from a couple of appearances for Exeter a decade ago. He could be a late developer or a one season wonder. Remember last year when people on this Forum were saying if we could just get Curtis Tilt a top six finish was in the bag with the young hungry players the new manager had signed. Peterborough have recently signed a few new ones and have other irons in the fire - their philosophy appears to be when you gamble - spread your risks.

Eaxctly that Terryf, well said.

Everyone stop panicking. If he does come here and cant hit a barn door, all those of you who are desperate for him to sign will besaying he is rubbish.

Sounds like another big drinker though and at 28 looks old for his age. Lets just wait and see what happens. Personally, I wont lose any sleep over it, seeing tje quality that we lost last summer.. we will be lucky if we get another 'McGoldrick' on a free.

And for those that says our wage budgetis crappy, really? How do you know? Evans has aleady said, we can either pay transfer fees or get free signings and pay better wages.

Norwood would be a free, so go figure..

Even with Tranmere promoted I think he'll move on because if the speculation is true that we are in the box seat to sign him we'll blow Tranmere out of the water on the wages front. Ok we've been relegated but I think we can be competitive on wages especially for a player who has come up from the lower leagues. We just need to hope that a Championship club or a Sunderland or Portsmouth don't come in, who's not saying that a deal is actually in place & he'll sign at the start of June. Either way i'm sure PL will have plans in place for a new striker(s) COYB

Would be a good move for both club and player. This will happen.

Would be exactly the type of player we need. Not as confident it will happen now though.

We would be his best option .we are a bigger club than tranmere and as there is no transfer fee his wages would be better than tranmere . Sure he could probably go to Swansea if the new manager wants him but he'd be bench warming .something tells me he would quickly rebel if he wasn't playing.. soo it's up to him, if he goes elsewhere it's his bl...ding loss. I now think the new persuasive team of MM and PL,especially PL will win the day

He's unlikely to say he's off 10 minutes after the game and a couple of days before one of those open top bus trophy parade things around Birkenhead. We'll see. Hold you nerve.

The possibility he won't sign makes me realise how much I am hoping he will.

He will sign with us (bookmark it) I don't know what else you could expect him to say! Even with promotion Tranmere will not be able to offer him anywhere near what we can in terms of wages. They look and average side at best as well and staying in the league next year will be an achievement. Nothing less than promotion back to the Championship would be our expectations. I know what side id want to be scoring my goals in.....

TBH I think him a total gamble. At 28 he is a v late bloomer.

Don't get me wrong. Could be great but who knows..... L2 or lower for most of his career, one really good season. I'd like another one in up top even if he does come

Where does the Swansea rumour come from can't find anything in Google about it?

i think if you go back to last seasons play-offs there was a certain hurst who had already agreed to sign for us, hell he had even cleared his desk before the the game showing his lack of respect to his employers and the supporters, Norwood is showing his respect to Tranmere and the supporters i think he will sign!

Kirbmeister added 09:24 - May 27
Ipswichtillidie- are you being serious? Tranmere look an average side? Did you watch us last season. I hope no one assumes we'll rip it up this season. It's going to be a long hard slog and bet there won't be much between the sides at the end of the season.

When he finally sits down with his agent and thinks about things he will realise this is a bigger club and he definitely has more chance of going up with us-----just look at the facilites and potential support for one.

I was also under the impression that this deal was sort of already done, I know things can change but I am still hopeful.
