Ex-Boss Hurst Named Scunthorpe Manager
Monday, 13th May 2019 17:22

Former Blues boss Paul Hurst has been named the new manager of Scunthorpe United with Chris Doig joining him as his assistant.

Hurst, 44, has been out of work since being sacked by Town in October having achieved just one win in his 15 games in charge.

The former Grimsby and Shrewsbury boss takes over at Glanford Park with the Iron having been relegated to League Two on the final day of the season.

Dukey44, couldn't agree more. He did more damage in weeks than all the other managers put together! I find it utterly bewildering that such a huge portion of blame for our relegation is directed towards Skuse,Chambo,MM,Evans and various other scapegoats yet this fool still garners support from some quarters! I don't wish for failure for him at Scunthorpe, he's already dragged our club into the depths and I hope no other club suffers the same fate in his hands.

No hard feeling, good luck in your new job, shame the job at ITFC was just too big for him.

I for one will wish him all the best.
Obviously made some mistakes when here (which I am sure he will admit to) including allowing Doig to run free.
Was not helped either by sulking senior pros who themselves admitted to not wanting the previous incumbent to leave.
Wanted to come in and change the direction, but not allowed to as many liked it the way it was and did not want tolook to improve themselves.
His signings were not a bad as people make out. Star man of the season Chalobah (PH signing), one of the better defenders Nsiala, (PH signing), best winger at the club Edwards (PH signing). Biggest Imapct signing Walters (PH signing), and lets not forget the promising Nolan (PH signing).
Certainly better than the likes of many of Micks signings and even some of Lamberts signings such as Elder and Dawkins.
Like Lambert, not dealt the best hand, and paid the penalty
So I wish him all the best !!!

Heathen66, not dealt the best hand? He was handed a healthy budget and given freedom to do as he pleased. Not so much about the incoming personnel, more about the departures.

I hope Scunthorpe lose week in week out. This pr*ck is responsible for our worst season ever. Feel free to come back and take Nsiala, Donacien and Jackson with you... they'd fit straight in there...

Created this username because I really hoped things would go well, instead it was an unmitigated disaster until he left in October. Not all his fault (we would have survived if we had renewed Carayol, Bru and Hyam) but not to be.

Wish him all the best at Scunthorpe and hope he's given a good budget so he can put in offers for some of our players, starting with 1.6 million Jackson. Hope he puts a bid in for 1.8. Nolan? 3 million. Donacien? 2 million is about right.

PH has shown he can do a decent job at Shrewsbury. He just got it all wrong for us, but if he's learnt from that he will probably do a good job again. Pity it will be with someone else, as most were very willing to back him when he arrived. Anyway, water under the bridge. It's PL now to take us forward, not PH.

I don't understand some of the fans and comments on here, people wanting blood of Mick who kept us competing in this league for over five years, yet this man and his bully Doig destroyed us in less than four months!!!

Personally, I'm not going to wish him well, he took the wage and the commitment at our beloved club and didn't keep the basic goalscorers who may well have kept us in the league, my fear is we may take years now to rebuild and get back.

I wish him well. But a bit of advice to their board, don't let him handle the transfers... haha.

PH got it wrong, but it's not as if he deliberately left us in a mess. I'm sure he thought he was doing what was right, and one or two of his signings were "OK"-ish. He would have wanted to succeed as much as we wanted him to. If he'd kept us up, things might have been very different because he would have had more leeway to adapt. Personally, I am more inclined to wish him better luck next time than join the blame game; but of course everyone has a right to their opinion on this.

I had such a good feeling when he took over. Maybe it could have come good, given more time. But that time is not given in todays football. He made mistakes, bringing in too many players of uncertain quality, dropping Bart, chopping and changing the team.
However people blaming Hurst for everything that has gone wrong at our club needs to wake up. We have been in decline for years, which probably led to players like Waghorn, Garner, McGoldrick, Webster, etc wanting to leave.
Wish him good luck, hope he is not as much out of depth at Scunthorpe as he seemed to be with us.

Such a sad situation for all.

I don't for one second think Hurst had any malicious intentions at the club, just gamble and inexperience didn't pay off for us all. His long term plan may have eventually come good, and considering the majority asked for the guy and were even excited about a long term plan to rebuild with "young, hungry, lower league players" and "even if it means we go down, but come good ultimately", then I wish him well at Scunthorpe.

Shame he left an almost promoted team (Shrewsbury - they've had a bad season and suffering too) in league one to join us and now he's going to managing a related team in league two, I don't suppose this would have been part of Hurts life plan either. Lessons learnt though for all.

Everyone's suffering, but all with the best intentions. Just gambled and hasn't so far paid off.

Still, McCarthy wasn't entertaining us but ground out table results, we have Lambert who is providing more entertainment but hasn't ground out results yet. Who would have accepted Lambert immediately after McCarthy if we hadn't got into this mess? Time will tell if we'll be better for it, but for now I'm just enjoying the football, which to me is far more important than the league or players we have. For now, anyway.

Wouldn't mind a fair few more wins though next season and promotion.

In many ways, he's landed on his feet with that job. Yes, it's League Two, but Scunthorpe will be one of the best teams by far in that division. If he can find a bit of momentum with them, it wouldn't surprise me at all if he were to take them up a couple of divisions and into the Championship. He wasn't the right man for Ipswich though.

Saxonblue74 The bad hand Hurst was dealt was the inheritance of sulking senior pros who wanted Mick to stay (and said so in the press) and were not willing to change or accept any change.
They were the biggest poor performers who seem to run the club (and still do to an extent) but were picked no matter what (and some still are).
The biggest problem Lambert now has is still having to pick Chambers for the next 2 years.

Completely agree heathen66. Hurst didn't have a cats chance..... once Didz etc left for family reasons, greed and blabbing in their beers for McCarthy.

Personally like Lambert but he has to hit the ground running after last seasons pish poor showing.

As for the vultures Gforce, that's a fact, but let's hope he stays.

Good luck Paul shame it didn't work out. Anyone blaming him for the clubs plight really is on a different planet he had no other choice to go and get average players and try make them into gems because this is our owners remit. The owner won't stump up wages or we could've gone and got proven strikers on loan and also if there was more ambition the likes of Waghorn etc may not have all bug****d off
