Hull Linked With Blues Winger Edwards
Thursday, 9th May 2019 14:55

Hull City are reported to be keen on adding Blues winger Gwion Edwards to their squad this summer.

According to HITC Sport, the Tigers are among a number of Championship clubs to have been alerted by the Welshman’s performances for Town since his move from Peterborough last summer for a fee understood to be in the region of £700,000.

Edwards, 26, made 25 starts and nine sub appearances, scoring six goals, in what was an up and down first season in the Championship hampered by injuries during spells.

The former Swansea trainee, who has been called up by Wales on a number of occasions but without winning a cap so far, is contracted until the summer of 2020 with the club having an option for a further season.

While Town, who are facing a £9 million drop in revenue in League One, may well consider interest in their players should it come over the summer, manager Paul Lambert insisted last week that no one would be allowed to leave for a cut-price fee.

“People have got to want your players,” he said when asked if players might have to be sold to fund new additions. “If you think people are going to go out of here on the cheap, no chance, no chance.

“I won’t allow it to happen and whoever comes in has to be better than the ones that go, that’s key.”

If we can't keep our best players, we won't be able to compete even in League One.

If we play a diamond with two up front (like most people seem to agree suits our squad) I'm not sure exactly where Edwards fits in to that.

think edwards can blow hot and cold, like alot other other wingers really. but can be fairly decent when on form, and scoring 6 goals in a struggling championship side is a good return, in league 1 he could be very good but as some others have said he is lightweight. would only sell for 1.5 million or above BUT ONLY if all the funds or a vast majority are given to lambert to strengthen, difficult one this.

thinking about it we still have danny rowe to come back, perhaps if we offload edwards he could maybe do a job for us in league 1?

When he 1st arrived he was good for a handful of games then looked as though he wasn't interested and couldn't be bothered. Too lightweight and gives up too easily for me. If we can get a decent fee and get somebody with the same skills a bit more physicality and more up for it week in, week out go for it.

I will drive him to Hull for nothing. He flatters to deceive. My dog has better ball skills!

The club should do all they can to keep him unless the offer is too good to refuse. If we sell, the cash won't be made available for squad strengthening so let's learn from our mistakes and build around the talent we have.

Okay, Edwards has been an inconsistent performer but the talent is clearly there and I believe he will shine in League 1. Plus he offers a goal threat in a very low-scoring side.

If he wants to go then we should let but would want at least 3 million quid for him before we even entertained selling him. As MooseJuice mentioned above, not sure how he fits into to a 442 diamond formation unless he plays instead of Judge and anyway he is much more suited to a formation where there is one upfront

Interesting one. Much as always depends on whether funds will be reinvested. We will need to cut back for sure, but if the money is only going to go exclusively into the running of the club, then we'd be better off keeping him.

That said, if a significant percentage can be spent on the playing squad, then he probably wouldn't be a huge miss. Seems to have persistent short term injuries and misses games through niggles, whilst is very inconsistent often drifting in and out of games.

Under contract so don't have to sell. If he wants to move then fair enough but would think Town would be wanting more they paid for him. With todays stupid fees how about £2.5m!!

He is OK although in and out of games. Danny Rowe will be back so there is another option plus I would have thought PL has players he would like to bring in.

Although his first touch and ball control is a bit dodgy, he does take defenders on and he is one of only a few players who knows where the goal is. I think we need him to stay.

I'd like to keep him, he's one of our better players.

However, this worries me. I fear that the better players in our squad will be cherry-picked by Championship clubs leaving us with Chambers, Skuse and a bunch of kids.

don't think there is room for him and judge in same Team if we want to play at least 2 of our own in midfield and one hopefully two forwards,

Can't believe some people still think if we sell Evans will reinvest. How may times?

If they offer silly money like £3m+ then sell especially if it can be re-invested.

We've somehow got to fit Dozzell,Bishop,Judge,Downes,Skuse,Lankester,Nolan,El Mouzini & hopefully Huws into that midfield as it is next season.

Keep for me. He's always willing to take on a man and has shown he can find the back of the net. His GPG pretty much matched Sears'.

I do think he sometimes overestimates his ability to beat said man and I'm sure things that worked like magic in L1 he found less reliable in the Championship but I'd have expected that to improve. Same for his crossing - he often does make space for it. A little time on the training ground I would hope would much improve it.

Anyway, we're in L1 next year. He's proven himself already at that level and will know a lot of the opposition. I think he'll be an asset.

£3m for Edwards! Speroni would ideal if poss. But we don't do ideal.

Hmmmm.....confused by some comments on here.....Edwards is an excellent player and would be a mistake to sell one of our better, more dynamic players...Danny Rowe instead??????? We need to keep our best players and then add to it.

Hope we look long-term (next 2-3 years) rather than short-term (1 year). If we fail to get promotion next year, we'll also again lose out on that 9 million worth of revenue. So 2.5 million won't mean a lot if we lose Edwards and then fail to achieve promotion. We should be aiming to retain a squad that has a very high chance of promotion. Unless of course we are intending to stay for a long time in Division 3..in which case sales/non-renewal of contracts is fine. Depends really on what our aim is now we are in Division 3. If we are aiming for promotion: Ward, Edwards, Rowe are all essential.

if we really dont want to get promoted next season, just sell him, because money seems to be what drives ipswich. very sad.

Fully agree algarvefan. It's all about if players want to be with us.
If not then just like Knudsen players should be moved on.
No point in keeping anyone at the club unless they are 100% committed.
I can see why Championship clubs may show an interest in him as he has the ability to do well. Perhaps too inconsistent at the moment to make a real impact anywhere though.

Churchman added 06:55 - May 10
Evans never ‘reinvests' more than a percentage and players brought in are rarely better than those that leave - hence the worst position in 60 years. Sadly this will continue in my view. However, if a player wants to leave, he has to be let go. We need people who want to be here

Desertion_ added 10:22 - May 10
We are short on wingers and players who can beat a man, I would like Town to offer Ward a continuation on his contract as well as keeping Edwards as I feel he can be a key player for league 1. He hasn't achieved a bad goals to game ratio either this season as a winger, with the amount of games he has played and all things considered.

Carberry added 13:16 - May 10
It's the owner that sells the players not PR Paul. If there's an offer Evans thinks is acceptable he will take it, whatever is said from within.
