McCarthy: Town Players Facing Pay Cuts of 50 or 60 Per Cent
Sunday, 28th Apr 2019 09:59

Former Town boss Mick McCarthy has revealed that some Blues players will be taking pay cuts of 50 or 60 per cent in League One.

Republic of Ireland boss McCarthy met with the Irish media earlier in the week, with some quotes relating to Town appearing on Wednesday, and speaking to journalists for the Sunday papers was asked further about the Blues' relegation.

“I feel desperately sad for the players,” he said. “Some are taking big, big pay cuts, 50 or 60 per cent going down, so I’m hearing.

“They were great those lads, the lads who played for me were fantastic. The staff, the club itself.

“But I have to honest, some of them who hounded me out for the last 18 months, I hope they enjoy their sexy football in League One.”

That Town's players were facing significant pay cuts was already known but with their precise extent not confirmed.

The Blues are facing what they expect to be a £9 million drop in income in League One with media, commercial and gate money all set to be down.

McCarthy also said that Blues loanee Will Keane’s qualification for Ireland has now been sorted, as far as he is aware: “I believe so, he’s playing now, I’m hoping he’s got his passport, I think he has.”

Keane, who suffered what's thought to be a recurrence of his hamstring injury at Sheffield United yesterday, qualifies for Ireland through his father.

The ex-Blues manager also revealed that 17-year-old Stoke City central defender Nathan Collins, who has broken into the Potters’ first team in the last three games, spent time training with Town during pre-season before moving to the Staffordshire club from Dublin side Cherry Orchard in 2017.

“Nathan Collins is playing for Stoke, he’s got in the team,” McCarthy said when asked about young Irish players who could come into his thoughts for the June internationals. “We looked at him with Ipswich up in Carton House.

“We didn’t sign him, probably for financial reasons, he’s now at Stoke. He’s now in the first team.”

Yes MM answered questions but took the opportunity to embellish and gloat. We have the opportunity for a fresh start and are better off without him.

Bomber21 - I agree. Why are we seeing these posts on TWTD. MM has no integrity so will always reply with some negative comment aimed at our fans. Although he was asked a question he should show some respect. I will now choose to not read anymore posts that include MM.

It's the players fault so of course they have to suck it and take consequences if they had of tried to play football they wouldn't be going down. Also Mick shut up....

Keep um coming McCarthy! I for one am enjoying the insight into our very own tight fisted club killing owner currently smothering the life out of once upon a time Europe bashing and league title chasing Suffolk residing Football Club!

Didn't sign a young Irish lad due to financial reasons 🤣

I think back to the number of young Irish lads we signed. How many made the grade let alone played a game for the first team

Yes he was asked a question but like anyone he does have the right to not answer but then MM has to give an answer because that who he is.... Wish I was getting a 40-60 percent cut on my season ticket next season so I won't be crying too hard for these players who lets face it will still be on more than a lot of fans earn a year

Also how come MM is never asked about the fans he hounded out of PR with negative boring football calling fans numbskulls and the biggest insult telling them to f off its not a one way street fans just don't turn on a manager yes there were some ugly scenes and perhaps it went too far sometimes but I am extremely happy he is not at the club anymore and his constant snipes at the club prove the point

What makes this site a misery "suffolkboy" is the continued use of Micks comments when he is no longer part of our club and should just leave alone but of course he cannot as he sees nothing wrong with his tenure here, what an absolute joke he is.

Also I think that divulging players income is worthy of an F.A charge it is totally out of order

He is nothing to do with the club anymore so please Phil and Gav can you stop posting stories about the man.

Lets all concentrate on the future and getting out of League One next season.

Pulling all in the same direction will be of great benefit!!!!

I'm surprised MM wasn't required to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement. If he was I should have thought that included commenting on players' contracts.

Isn't it time that TWTD stopped reporting on this sh**stirring by a previous manager?

Quite a few of them need a 100% pay cut as they are shown the door.

Gcon added 18:27 - Apr 28
Seriously, why do you think he says it?
Because he knows it winds the muppets up that hounded him out and treated him so poorly.
And look, he's bang on. Always gets more comments than any other story.

Can't help imagine that there must be something in Muck's contract which would prevent him disclosing what is confidential information. All employment contracts have them these days. Time club turned on him as it's not the first time. Those who are suffering pay cuts won't be happy with this disclosure. He's clearly still bitter as hell. Time he moved on

Ah Bohslegend, how you've been missed. Never went to a single Game but you always knew what great football we were lucky to be watching. Also, hasn't been on here in ages, yet just happens upon here when his idol turns up. What a coincidence.

For those saying he was only answering a question, there is always the “No Cooment, it's not my place” option instead.

Phil, this is getting so boring now. The bottom line is Mick is right, don't get me wrong I wouldn't want a change from PL but as much as the out MM brigade can't take it they were wrong and Mick is right. They have got what they wished for and for those that gave so little respect to a great ex player, proven manager at both club and international level are simply a poor excuse at accepting reality, and image they are bringing up children to deny humble pie! Now please leave it and now let's all move on with no MM headlines and let's get behind Paul and the club. Thanks
