Bowman Joins McCarthy's Staff as Ireland Win in Gibraltar
Saturday, 23rd Mar 2019 19:31

Town director of football Dave Bowman joined former Blues manager Mick McCarthy and his assistant Terry Connor on the Republic of Ireland bench as they beat Gibraltar 1-0 in their opening European Championships qualifier this evening having taken on a role as a technical advisor with the FAI. Blues attacker Alan Judge was an unused sub, while ex-Town striker David McGoldrick created the winning goal for Burnley’s Jeff Hendrick three minutes after the break.

The 58-year-old has been given permission to take on the part-time position with Ireland while continuing his duties with Town.

Bowman joined the Blues in 2012 after McCarthy took over at Portman Road having previously worked with him at Wolves, Sunderland and during his previous stint in charge of Ireland.

Effectively the club’s chief scout despite his job title, Bowman remained at the club after McCarthy’s departure and now works with current boss Paul Lambert on recruitment.

We understand Sheffield Wednesday boss Steve Bruce recently showed interest in taking Bowman, who is out of contract in the summer, to Hillsborough.

Ireland host Georgia in their second qualifier at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Tuesday when Judge will hope to win his sixth full cap.

Strange decision by the Club to allow Bowman to link up - the sooner Lambert hooks Bowman out now the better. Typical McCarthy boring traits, and subsequent results.
Far more competent people out there than Bowman.

The Gibraltar game was played on a plastic pitch which slowed the game terribly and was an injury hazard to the players, it really shouldnt be allowed for senior international games. The wind was crazy, it whipped around the Rock causing havoc for corners, long passes etc. It really was a horrible game but at least Ireland got the 3 pts and no injuries!

I didn't even know that we had a director of football. What exactly is/was his role?

Maybe we should give him some credit for the good signings MM & TC made, there we a few, given he is effectively top scout according to the article? Just a thought.

Er...but this is an Ipswich story, isn't it? It's about Bowman. And Judge, an Ipswich player, is mentioned in the final para.

Come on folks let's not get into more slagging each other off. The article is on here because he's a current Town employee. The fact he was employed by a previous manager who caused a split the fan base is incidental.

Personally I'm a fan of Ipswich, Ireland and Gibraltar. Not a bad result all round :-)
