Pennington Linked With Derby Loan Switch
Thursday, 31st Jan 2019 14:31

Blues loan centre-half Matthew Pennington is being linked with a loan switch to Derby County.

Everton man Pennington has been a virtual ever-present for Town since signing on loan on deadline day in August but lately has moved to right-back rather than his usual central role.

Town are trying to sign right-back James Bree on loan from Aston Villa before tonight’s 11pm deadline, which would give them six loan players with five permitted in a matchday squad so Pennington departing might not be as much of a surprise as might have previously been thought.

The Derby Telegraph is reporting that the Rams are keen to take the 24-year-old on loan for the second half of the season with Town, his parent club and the player all having to agree to cut short his spell at Portman Road.

I hope that doesn't happen. I've been pleased with him for certain.

I agree - this would be bizarre! If Chambers or Collins get injured or suspended, who would then play CB? Nsiala?! Spence?! Knudsen?!

If we allow him to cut his loan deal short so he can join another, stronger Championship club on loan then we deserve to go down.

Pennington has done well. We shouldn't lose him.

Backwards move by Pennington. His starting every game here getting the experience which he needs to sitting on the bench at Derby as I can't see him starting there

Can't blame him if he goes. He's better than what they have too. Hoping for a decent robust midfielder before deadline, or maybe I'm being greedy

Everything to be done in the last hours of the window, needs to be fully geared with next season in L1. We only require players at this club, who will be at this club next season.
Current players we have on loan, more or less wont be.
If you remove all loaned players from our squad today, you would be left with a squad fit for L2 football.
We don't need another summer of major player overhaul that's for sure.
So I had hoped this window would be aimed at avoiding this situation.
Unfortunately it hasn't happened, and we are faced with the prospect of seeing all loaned players leaving in the summer, and being left with a squad that will need serious strengthening and investment just to compete in L1.

If Pennington goes, we get Bree, but we're stuck with Knudson, then maybe Knudsun will get a chance in the centre of defence - where is is much better than at left back

Yup that sounds sensible, break the back four up again just as it was starting to look a bit stronger and settled

Oldelsworthyfan. Jonas doesn't want to be at the club, and hasn't since MM left.
I for 1 hope to never see him in our shirt again.

Don't get this at all. Crazy decision. We should be doing all we can to keep him.

We have to remember also that we still can't score goals! Surely this has to be a priority for a struggling side over which 2-3 players to pick at right-back?

BoroBlue. Doesn't matter if we score a couple but let in 3?

If Knudsen stays, sign Bree, keep Pennington and send Elder back.

This window needed 1 of 2 things.
To go gun-ho and spend serious money in the hope of performing a miracle and avoid 3rd tier football.
Or bringing in players with the 3rd tier being most likely, with the aim of keeping those players within the squad into next season.
We haven't done either of the above.
What is our plan over the coming 12-18 months?
We clearly as yet don't have one.
