U23s Win at Watford to Hit Top of Table
Monday, 17th Sep 2018 17:24

Goals from Andre Dozzell and Idris El Mizouni gave Town’s U23s a 2-0 victory over Watford at Vicarage Road this afternoon, a result which sees them to the Professional Development League Two South table.

Dozzell turned in Jack Lankester’s pass in the 23rd minute and El Mizouni added the second on 70 after the Watford keeper had saved from Lankester.

Teddy Bishop was subbed in the 25th minute having suffered what appeared to be a hamstring problem.

U23s: Wright, Crowe, Webber, Ndaba, Clements, Dozzell, Bishop, McLoughlin, Roberts, Lankester, Folami. Subs: Egan, El Mizouni, McGavin, Cotter, K Brown.

We're crying out for a fit Huws, but his absence again doesn't bode well. There was probably good reason why Cardiff let him come to us in the first place. It's only the u23 league but we are producing some decent players and that should give real hope for the future, even if the present looks grim.

Time to sort out the injured trio once and for all. No contribution from them last season and none this year so far. All expected to turn up fit after rehab in summer months. All drawing wages and none look like they are going to ever get fit enough to claim a place in the 1st team and keep it. Surely they are having a negative effect around the place. A club with a budget that we have can't have 3 players on decent money never going to make a contribution to the club. Cut our losses and sort out the contracts. Dozzell deserves to be in or around the 1st team and yes what has contributed to the downfall of one of the most promising young players, Cotter?

I had expected to see some of our kids in the first team by now but clearly PH doesn't rate them. Surely they're no worse than the League 1 accquistions we are playing at the moment.

Great result by the U23 team, are they using only 1 up front? Or are they playing the way that the U23 managers see fit to win the game?

You have to feel for Bishop. Doesn't look as if he's going to make it, which is a great pity for him and for us. Hope I'm wrong.

From what little i've seen, the successes of the U-23s or U-18s come from the majority of players knowing each other and playing the same game plan they've learnt through the ranks at the club. For that to translate into the first team, the players just need to play with each other more - to get to know which runs or which passes other players like to make - and to get used to playing a new system as well as having the confidence to do it when the results start coming. In an ideal world, we'll have a pair like Dozzell and Morris break through into the first team at some point and be our next Ambrose and Bent with an almost telepathic understanding of each other. Throw in Nydam and Downes as well and we could get really lucky - but they clearly aren't all quite there yet so let's give them time. Of course it's frustrating and nerve wracking having no wins yet in a very close and competitive league, but I'm sure we'll get there. Let's see what form we're on by the end of December.

I keep reading good things about Idris El Mizouni, I wonder how long it will be before he is given an opportunity with the first team?
