Huws Heads Late Leveller for U23s at Crewe
Monday, 27th Aug 2018 12:57

Emyr Huws grabbed a late leveller as the Blues’ U23s drew 1-1 with Crewe Alexandra at Gresty Road this morning.

The Welsh international, playing his third U23s game this month as he continues his comeback from his knee injury, headed in an Andre Dozzell cross from the right in the 85th minute.

Dozzell had hit the post with a freekick just before half-time as Town looked to equalise Oli Finney’s 41st-minute opener for the Railwaymen.

In addition to Huws, who had previously only been given the first halves of the behind-closed-doors friendly with Cambridge and Monday’s 8-0 hammering of Hull, and Dozzell, Danny Rowe, Teddy Bishop and Luke Woolfenden, back after his knee injury more quickly than had been expected, also all played the full 90 minutes.

U23s: Wright, Emmanuel, Clements (c), Huws, Woolfenden, Ndaba, Rowe, Bishop, Morris, Dozzell, Lankester. Subs: Crowe, Ware, Folami, McLoughlin, McKendry.

Not bothered about the result, Huws playing 90 minutes best result of all.

Huws is our best player on his day.. hope he's back against Nodge.

Huws heading in a Dozzell cross, how much do we want to see that in the first team report instead!

So the three creative forces Dozzell / Huws / Bishop all nearing a return. Excellent!

Fantastic to see Woolfenden back too.

Feel for Emmanuel, perhaps a loan for him.

If the three aforementioned can stay fit, that's essentially a fully fit squad bar Adeyemi who clearly won't feature.

Been a LONG TIME since that was the case.

Great news!

Great to see Woolfenden, Huws and Dozzell back. They would make a difference.

We put out a strong side. Included some first team squad players. And we only got a draw against Crewe?!! I don't think that we are as good as we think we are. Worrying for the future

WoodfordTim - do you know anything about football?
These ‘first team players' are clawing their ways back from serious long term injuries, and can't be expected to be operating at full pace yet - let alone throwing themselves into full blooded tackles.

Great to see. Cannot wait for firing huws back in the side. I just do not think we need skuse and chalobah in same side one or other for me.

Presumably Woolfenden played the full 90 mins and is now in contention for the derby? Unless we appeal Nsiala's unjust red card and are still awaiting a decision come Sunday.

Thank you, PositivelyPortman. Was only thinking of who we played: Crewe U23's. And we did have a strong team out with quite a few first team wannabes in it, even though 2 or 3 are on the return from injury, as you say. Still, they were deemed fit enough to play though.
You can't get away from the fact that it was a poor result for us

Travelled up to the game. For most most of the game we were 2nd best. Amazing goal line clearance by Josh in 1st half kept us in it. Defence struggled to contain front 3 at times, all youngsters who looked very useful. Huws and Dozzell don't look far away, Bishop struggled and it was a horrible error by him that led to their goal. We livened up in the last 10 and could have, undeservedly, got the win. I must be mad doing a round trip to Crewe for an u23 game.

Surprising that two with a little first team experience McLoughlin & Folami were on the bench. Both are good at u23 level and McLoughlin is usually captain. Both are well capable of progressing to league football at some level.

Jury still out on Huws for me...hasn't played enough football over the last season to be fully assessed. Some games he has played well and others you wouldn't think he had been on the pitch, namely the Norwich derby at Carrow Road in 2017 (when he was on loan).
