Skuse and Nolan Doubts for Sheffield Wednesday Trip
Thursday, 23rd Aug 2018 15:25

Midfielders Cole Skuse and Jon Nolan are doubts ahead of Saturday’s trip to Sheffield Wednesday.

Skuse suffered a quad problem in the 1-1 draw with Aston Villa and was forced off with a recurrence of the same injury during the 2-0 loss at Derby on Tuesday.

“It’s not looking great for the weekend,” manager Paul Hurst said. “But at the same time I’ve got to know Cole in the short time we’ve been here and I know that he’s a quick healer.

“If there’s any chance whatsoever of him feeling like he can contribute then he’ll certainly put his hand up and will want to be part of the squad. I’m reluctant to totally rule him out but he’s certainly very doubtful.”

Regarding the former Shrewsbury man, he added: “Jon Nolan rolled his ankle at the start of the game, so that’s two games running where he’s had an issue right at the beginning of the game.

“That hasn’t helped and that’s sore today. We’re more hopeful on that one but again it’s not a definite in or out in Jon’s case.”

Emyr Huws played the first half for the U23s on Monday as they thrashed Hull City 8-0 but Hurst had hoped the Wales international would manage longer.

“He got 45 minutes so it was something but we would have liked to have played more but we just felt there was a little bit of puffiness in his knee,” he said.

“But again that’s something we’ll get through in time. While he was on the pitch, he did fine. It wasn’t the greatest of tests but there was an element of just getting out there.

“It was at Portman Road which I think helps as well in terms of the feel to everything.

"He’s trained today, that’s important, along with Teddy Bishop who missed the game through illness after spending some time with yourselves [the media] looking forward to watching him play.

“He’d been in that morning so that was a little bit frustration for everyone, but he’s back out there and, as I keep saying, the more they train, the better it is for them.”

Town have on-loan Fulham man Tayo Edun back following his one-match suspension and Hurst has been impressed by the England U20 international since he has been at the club.

“He’s done well, being asked at times to play a role that’s not quite his first port of call,” he added.

“But it’s nice to hear today that when we travelled to Derby he was in training and people are speaking very well about his attitude to his training, which should be the case but isn’t always.

“That’s nice to hear. He’s trained today, has done more than a lot of the other group and I have to say, again he’s looking sharp, has shown a good attitude to his work and I’m pleased to have him back available.”

Hurst also revealed that midfielder Tristan Nydam was back in training today after a minor injury.

“He’s returned to training today, he’d had a little issue with his quad. Nothing major, he’s back training, that’s all that was,” Hurst said.

Midfielder Tom Adeyemi (achilles) and central defender Luke Woolfenden (knee) both remain sidelined.

Well we see how much Cole actually contributes during a game.

would like to see morris/lankester involved.
morris looked sharp against blackburn and lankester was positive in almost everything he did in u23 ,might be the perfect link we need to the one up front at he moment

Currie10 you are endlessly creative in finding ways to be negative.

Hurst has to be careful that he doesnt set us up too negatively. Not sure Skuse and Chalobah is the right combo. Reminds me of Skuse and Douglas days and if you play this way win an inexperienced guy alone up front then goals are going to be hard to come by. Skuse being out gives Hurst a chance to try something different.

Juries still out for me on Skuse this season, they say the holding role does a lot of stuff unnoticed, but I'm finding it hard to notice any good stuff. There again he went off the other night and we conceded 2.
Nolan's been impressive with a few tricks in his locker and well capable of driving the ball forward. Looks an exciting addition and will be more of a loss imo, but either way we need to get that first win.

..... if the winless run continues, as confidence wains, expect a few more than normal ‘twinges'.

That's not being negative, believe me it's truthful - prove me wrong very soon please, but continuing with one up front, and service at a premium, I honestly cannot see where a win is coming from.

Please don't play Skuse or Nolan if they're not fit. We need to learn our lessons about playing half fit players.
Unsurprisingly, the signs about Huws don't appear good & I won't be surprised if him, Bishop & Adeyemi play very little this season, which leaves the squad looking thin.

As long as there is no long term damage I see this as a good thing ! Chance for Dozzell to get back in the squad and maybe bishop or huws to get 10 mins too. Assume edun and chalobah will
Be the two that defo start, perhaps with downes

3 points would ease a hell of a lot of nerves right now....but just can't see where the goals are going to come from. I'd take a 0-0 before kick-off.
