McGoldrick Joins Blades
Tuesday, 24th Jul 2018 17:12

Sheffield United have confirmed the signing of released Blues striker David McGoldrick following a trial.

The Republic of Ireland international, who left Town in May having not been offered new terms by the Blues, has signed an initial one-year deal at Bramall Lane but with a view to an extension.

Blades boss Chris Wilder says the chance to sign the 30-year-old was too good to pass up.

"I've continually said that we only want to bring in players who strengthen us and David ticks that box,” he told his club’s official site.

“He’s a great link player, has a wealth of Championship experience and he may be coming into the best years of his career.

"David wanted to return north [his family home is in Nottingham] and this was too good an opportunity to turn down. His attitude and ability, not only in the matches he has played but also on the training ground, is without question.

“I've spoken to a number of respected people about David and they cannot speak highly enough of him.”

Wilder is also keen to sign Blues striker Martyn Waghorn, however, as reported yesterday, the Blades’ only bid for the 28-year-old - understood to be a figure approaching £5 million - was turned down by Town three weeks ago with no new offer having been made since then.

Keep him fit they've got a banger.

That's the issue. Worth a go.

agreed Currie10,

if they keep him fit he will no doubt do v well for them, shame he left us but it was the right decision for both parties!

Positively - even with no pace he can still skip around 2/ 3 players / pick a pass that no one on the pitch can see.

On a free transfer, ONE year deal!? Absolute no brainer their end to get him in.

Perhaps their physio can do what ours was incapable of - keep him off the treatment table.

Perhaps they'll rotate him more than us and get more out of him than we did.

Fair play to both parties.

I suppose it depends how much they are prepared to pay David, if he keeps fit could be a great asset . If they have paid a signing on fee to him and big wages that is a huge gamble .

I could be wrong here @ therein61, I thought Leicester offered 6 mill and we were holding out for 7 mill and they never came back with an increased offer to meet our valuation. That was some time ago now though, so like I said, I could well be wrong.
It did show some ambition on Marcus' part there then though, although it didn't quite work out as there was no crystal ball to foresee all the injuries David would go on to have for us.
I wonder what David thought when he saw Leicester win the league, there must of been a little regret in the back of his mind thinking if things had of worked out differently he might of played some role in that.

I think you'll find that an injury prone, out of contract 30 year old will have to take what is on offer

One of the most technically gifted players we have had. Pity about his injuries

And I was a big fan of Dave and he seemed to have his mojo back at the start of last season but at times he could look really pedestrian (such as in the 2nd half against Norwich) and he had definitely lost too much pace for my liking over the last couple of seasons. But he still had a lovely touch and could be effective on his day. A few games though he kept coming too deep for my liking whereas I wanted to see him nearer the goal where he could do more damage. But in his prime he was definitely very good for us.

Good luck Didzy. A brilliant on his day but unfortunately for him he had fewer & fewer of those days due to injuries

Great player. Just very unfortunate with injuries. If fit Sheffield Utd have themselves a great player. Will wish both mcgoldrick and his family the best for the future. Hope we give him a warm welcome when he returns.

I'm much happier with our new considerably younger No10. For all the undoubted skill he may possess he is about as robust as a China doll and isn't getting any younger.

I'm slightly nervous about this. PH has intimated that certain areas of the club weren't quite as professional as he had expected. I'm wondering whether under a new training schedule and fitness programme McDidz might not have the constant injury issues that he had here. Whilst on balance I was happy to see him move on (and clearly that was his decision) nevertheless this might just come back to bite us.

If he's fit he's class even witn his legs gone. Reads the game, all the skill. Might be signing of the season for them

Good player - if he plays and that's the issue. Misses too many matches and often tajes several games after injury lay off to even look match sharp. They might get ten decent games out of him.

Was our most skilful player on his day....but as has been said ...too few of them for us due to injury ......if he remains injury free we will rue the day we got rid of him.....for me it's a no brainier based on his injury record as it frees up wages for others to come in
David ..thank you
