Wilder Reveals New Blades Bid for Waghorn
Saturday, 21st Jul 2018 19:29

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has revealed that the Blades have made a new bid for Blues striker Martyn Waghorn.

“We’ve got some targets, we’ve got that bid in for Martyn Waghorn," Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield following his side’s friendly at Mansfield.

"It’s out there now, it’s not worth not talking about and we’re looking to bring another two or three players in."

Has he had any indication of Town’s response? “No, it’s there, we haven’t had anything back off Ipswich, if it’s been accepted or declined. It’s there and we’ll leave it there and we’ll still obviously look to bring other players in.”

As TWTD revealed yesterday, the Blues rebuffed a bid from the South Yorkshiremen earlier in the summer, an offer understood to be below the £5 million cited on Thursday. The current bid appears to be at the £5 million mark in those reports.

On Thursday evening Wilder said the Blues had valued Waghorn at £8-£10 million, while it was later reported that the Blades had initially been told - presumably at the time of the earlier offer - that Town wanted £7.5 million for last season’s 16-goal top scorer, who they signed for £200,000 from Rangers a year ago.

Blues boss Paul Hurst made no reference to a new bid when quizzed on Waghorn’s situation after Town’s 1-0 victory over Barnet.

“There’s interest, I was never going to try and deny that, but the situation is as it is,” he said.

“He’s our player, he’s played 90 minutes today where sometimes in these situations we see managers or clubs pulling the player out of the game. If he had been ill today or had a little bit of an injury, not in the squad, that would have just fuelled everything.

“He’s here, he’s played and he’s very much our player until anything changes. At the minute I’m working under the understanding that he’s our player.

“We want him to start hitting the back of the net as he has been doing in training. He’s a great lad, you can’t get away from that and he has a smile on his face.

“But he has an edge and he wants to win. There were a couple of challenges [at Barnet] which were mainly frustration coming out but I’m not going to knock that too much as long as it doesn’t go too far.

“He wants to win. I’m sure they all want to win in the dressing room, but there’s one or two where that all stands out a little more.

"We’re trying to get to the young players and understand that when they get out onto the pitch they are equals and have to step up.

"They need that hunger and drive and to not be fearful. Wags is a very good pro and an example for the younger lads.”

“In fairness to him, I’ve seen players try that when it’s blatantly not on. It’s like, ‘What are you doing?’, but when he’s trying it, it’s on.

“That one today I thought was going in because he’s got that vision, he sees it and that shows an intelligent player.”

In addition to Sheffield United, Derby County, Middlesbrough and Birmingham have also been eyeing the 28-year-old, while Nottingham Forest have been linked.

Waghorn is effectively contracted to the Blues for two more seasons, his current deal running to next summer with the club having an option to keep him for a further year.

If it's over 7 mill take it. This would be another superb profit. Sign 2 new strikers and 2 new centre backs. In Hursty we trust.

Shropshire.. Yes, it would be good profit, but it's not about that! We need to keep him. We're not scoring enough yet at it is, so without Waggy, where will the goals come from. I know we would sign another target, but it isn't long until the start of the season now. Keep him, unless £12M+ comes in!

Surely wilder should keep his mouth shut bet he wouldn't like managers talking about signing his players!!

I assume it's designed to perhaps alert Waghorn to the fact to try and unsettle him, especially if the blunts are aware he might be interested in a move, in the hope it will lower the price when the player asks to go, if he does.

Good ambition from Sheffield a United. Sold a player and look to invest heavily. No parachute payments.

The problem now, is if we do sell, then there is less than two weeks until the season starts. We risk not bringing in a player of equal quality or worst still a load of loans.

Evans needs to prove himself this week.

looking more and more like we will be losing Waghorn, ok if we get the price ,but we will be left scrambling around for a decent replacement and time is running out, We need to get off to a good start and that is looking ever more doubtful to me .

Put up or shut up Wilder. Stop trying to unsettle the player

Literally doesnt make any difference how much we paid for him and cant understand why anyone mentions it. If hes integral to our team they have to pay whatever it takes for us to be able to find a replacement of the same or better ability. Are we going to find that? And if we do would we pay over a million to get them? Doubt it.

BryanPlug: McCarthy was making similar comments about Bart after he left this Club so seems anything goes now! All very unprofessional I agree !

Never mind the comments it would be madness to let him go!

Even if we get £20m for him we know ME won't give him the money to replace him and even if he did would be very hard to find a replacement as good.

Why oh why do we seem to be selling our best players to our nearest rivals?!!!! Do we see other clubs doing the same?

No point having £10m in the bank from sales if we're heading to league 1!!!!!

Madness

Please PH or ME don't sell waggy at any price . I was one of many who stayed away last season because of the poor football dished up by maccarthy . This season I'll be back and looking forward to seeing waggy scoring

If we lose Waghorn to Sheffield United, you've got to question where we are as a club.

This club will be I the wilderness as long as Evans PLC are the owners
It is time for concerted action to get them out

Why on earth do we need to sell in order to buy. We have over £4miilion left from transfers and fifa payment. Both ME and PH need to get their finger out this week because we have the easiest start any new manager could wish for. If we lose most of those games we will be relegated. End of.

Quite looking forward to West Ham game to see the new era of open expansive football. I have this horrible feeling it will be another groundhog saturday from last season.

I would prefer to sell Garner and use the profit from this sale to invest in any other new recruits Hurst needs...Waghorn is a 20+ goal (and worth at least £8mill) a season striker at his best and for the money that Evans forked out 12 months ago it will be very difficult to replace him in the current climate. On another note...It was great to see Kenlock, Emmanuel and Wolfenden in towns starting XI today not forgetting the creative Mr Downes too.

If we're saying we are valuing him at between £8-10m, and although I hope we don't sell; if we do, let's aim for a high price as he surely showed his worth last season. If we do sell, I'd like to see players back at Ipswich that we shouldn't have parted company with in the first place, ie, Jack Marriott, Matt Clarke, Jordan Rhodes, etc, etc...the list could go on and on!

Judas Rhodes is history with this Club, as far as Town fans are concerned & he's also history on the pitch if the last 2-3 seasons are anything to go by. An expensive loan for “ them” & Desperate times it seems.

If we sell Waghorn we will be back to the season before last when ME thought he could make a quick buck and sell Murphy..and we all know what happened that season. The reason there is interest in Waggy because he is a top striker and there aren't many around.

We wouldn't be able to replace hm and then it will be season over. who cares what we paid for him. profit means nothing if you are going to struggle all season. we already shot;d have never sold Webster imo. best centre back in the Championship this year, watch that space!!

We have re-couped £4M in pre-season, re-signed Bart, lets build on that. I have a bad feeling about this year already and the scum rubbing in t with signing Rhodes. Judging from his comments I am not sure why he hates the Town fans so much, we never wanted him to be sold in the first place!!

PS: Wilder is an unprofessionalT@!T for trying to unsettle Waghorn... the FA should bring him to book..

Remember Sheff Utd are the Norwich of teh north and not bigger than us!

What ever happened to financial fair play that's what I want to know it fails me how clubs like Sheffield Utd can afford that kind of money there's no way there making that kind Of turnover.
But I have to say sell Waghorn and kiss goodbye to championship status sadly

Depresses me that they're able to talk about 5m plus for a player while we're haggling over 700k for a CB from Blackpool. Yes I want my club to be run in a stable manner, but someone's really got to question ME in a serious way if we sell with little time to buy a replacement. Also, are we really going to find a replacement for the about 1m that ME will want to spend?

Sine ME took over, it seems like a long slow journey downwards...

Steelmonkey added 07:22 - Jul 22
As I've said before I'll be narked if we do sell him.
If the offer is less than 8m just ignore it and leave them in limbo, if it's more then the club has to act as they have set the fee to sell.
As history proves it's a dangerous game to play selling your top striker at this stage of pre season. Slightly different to the Murphy scenario as he wanted the move, but the result will be the same for us I'm afraid if Hurst cannot find a replacement.
