Sheffield United Linked With Waghorn Bid
Thursday, 19th Jul 2018 10:42

Sheffield United are reported to have made a £5 million bid for Blues striker Martyn Waghorn.

According to the Daily Star, the Blades' offer is the latest in a series of bids they have made for last season’s 16-goal top scorer.

We understand the South Yorkshiremen are indeed among the numerous Championship clubs to have shown interest in the 28-year-old in recent weeks, while Middlesbrough, Derby and Birmingham are all keen and Nottingham Forest have been linked.

The Blues are believed to want at least £7 million for the frontman signed from Rangers for £200,000 last August.

Speaking earlier this morning, Blues boss Paul Hurst admitted there is no guarantee that Waghorn will still be at Portman Road on the opening day of the season.

This absolutely cannot happen unless there is a 1 in front of that 5....as a start point

£7 million is not enough!

£5m? Well you're half way to what we should be asking for. Personally, I think £7m would be selling him on the cheap in today's transfer market. Can't see how we'd find someone as good as him for the same price, let alone what Hurst would actually be given to spend to replace him.

I could live with him going to the Prem but not another Championship hopeful.

Unfortunately, the honest comment by PH is now going to generate a bidding war for Waghorn. We were in a similar position with McGoldrick a few years ago and probably should have cashed in on Leicester's £7M bid but with the departure of Murphy at the same time I think that Marcus decided against it. I think that this is an Agent trying to get Waghorn a new big bucks contract following on the back of Bart. PHIL do we have the details of which agents look after our players?

If other Championship strikers are going for £10m-£15m, how do we value Waghorn at £7m?

I dont want to lose him. But;

There is no guarantee he will repeat last seasons form.
He is closing in on 29, so if we did get £7-8m and spent that on a younger striker then thats arguably good business.

As all above have said, the key is having a replacement lined up BEFORE he goes.

I don't want waghorn to go but I think we have to be realistic. I would take £7 m for him! Yes you could argue that we might be able to get more and hopefully we do but if I was hurst, and her clearerly wants to put his stamp on the team, then I would agree to sell him. As long as hurst gets to reinvest that money then we could get in a few quality players

we always sell cheap and Evans says we cant afford to spend ,I find it hard to get my head round that, IF we sell Waghorn , the money [if made available] will be diluted buying in other players, not spent on a proven striker, We just don't seem to be able to do anything other than tread water with Evans spending.Hurst would not have been my first choice ,but im happy to back him, and have no criticism of him to date.Evans remains the biggest threat to our Championship survival, and Premiership is a Unicorn. I think Waghorn is going, and I cant see a player of his quality coming in as a replacement. T

Well Sheffield United pay Waghorn's worth or jog along with your £5m offer that's an utter disgrace!!

Don't sell for a penny below 10 in this market.

The other issue we do sell him is the asking price for anyone we then take an interest in doubles immediately. And you know come August Evans will be using that as justification for not signing a proper replacement.

All im saying is hes had one good season and over 10 million is wishful thinking for 29 year old in my opinion....

5 million is way too low. If Waghorn is the be sold we should be asking for 10 million I think, he's in his prime at the moment. I really hope he won't go because I just cant see how we can even come close to replacing him. Our only senior strikers left would be Garner and Sears, we would need to bring in 2 top quality strikers.

Only 3 weeks until the transfer window closes so we have to start bringing in some players!

Utterly derisory offer given Waghorn's stats last season ..... 10 million quid should be the bare minimum.

New Contract should be offered to him in line with Bart

What reason could we possibly have to sell him to a rival championship club?
Clearly some have more ambition than ITFC.
Time will tell.

jas0999 added 12:40 - Jul 19
No point selling for whatever fee, unless we can bring in an equally as good striker on a permanent deal. Selling our players and replacing with a loan is not the answer nor good for the long term future of the club.

Would be gutted to see him go for any price. If we lose him - shall we bring back Marriott?

casanovacrow Thought you would be chuffed to get rid for £5m. You didn't rate him at all when he signed!

Bart signing wAs the high of the window so far and sparks that feel good factor around the club again.. Waghorn leaving would show us all that there is no real commitment to taking this wonderful club forward, and I strongly believe that the feel good will be gone again.. Marcus, if your cronies do read this site, this would be a bad bad decision and you would be the one responsible... if Waggy says he wants to leave, then I understand that's almost out of your hands but until then you must do everything to keep this player on our books!
