New Posh Midfielder Was Late Town Target Claim
Monday, 4th Jun 2018 20:03

Town are reported to have made a late attempt to sign Alex Woodyard, who joined Peterborough United from League Two Lincoln City last week.

According to the Peterborough Telegraph, the Blues unsuccessfully tried to persuade the former Southend, Dartford, Concord Rangers and Braintree man to move to Portman Road, while several other League One sides in addition to Posh were also interested.

Woodyard, who played against Town for the Imps in both 2016/17 FA Cup ties, completed his move to London Road last Wednesday, new Blues manager Paul Hurst’s appointment having been announced earlier the same day.

The 25-year-old was in the Lincoln team which beat Hurst's Shrewsbury side 1-0 in the Checkatrade Trophy final at Wembley in April (pictured above).

Peterborough are said to have activated a £225,000 release clause in Woodyard’s Sincil Bank contract.

Let's hope this isn't true. If we lose out to a league one side then that's a worry, as must mean other lower league players don't see us an attractive proposition or more likely our wage budget is less than a league one club. Although I suspect there is something in the latter, equally I can't see players turning down a championship club above a league one. Hopefully.

His loss we can do better

No chance that's true, Hurst would want to evaluate the squad first

That would suggest either it was not someone Hurst wanted or that he was so desperate to sign him that his first conversation with Evans after signing for us was "quick get Woodyard in the door". Not knowing what position he plays, I know which I think is more likely. I expect there are other options available in his position if we are after someone in it.

I have never heard of him before, but two things spring to mind as he is described as a midfielder.
1) why are we letting Hyam go and trying to sign a lower league player?
2) if everyone is fit then midfield is the one area looking overstocked.

I don't blame a player for not wanting to sign for a team without a manager. If he had already decided on his move, the late interest would have been difficult to deal with.
Obviously, we can compete with league one clubs for players, but a sensible player would not sign for us without knowing that the manager wants him and views him as having the ability to play at Championship level.

Definitely true. Darragh MacAntoney confirmed on the day we had tried in vein to sign him.

Bluster - how could we have tried to sign a player without a manager? This sounds like his agent passed his details on to us and is now trying to bolster the guy's profile. Meh.

A complete non-story with no evidence behind it: think! Why would Hurst be sanctioning a move for a player when he hasn't signed to be Manager:

Maybe the two performances of mighty Mick's team that he witnessed whilst playing against us in the cup sealed his decision to opt for Peterborough as being the better option for his future.

I would have loved to see woodyard here. Rarely loses the ball, tenacious tackler, focal point for passing and switching play. Would have had advice from the Cowley's where to go for his career to flourish. He is championship quality, needs a caring arm around to bring the best out which happened at Lincoln City. Little difference between top of league two and lower half of championship other than wages.

We often hear complaints of how young up and coming British talent that that is in our lower leagues is not given the opportunity to progress in the game. But this summer has unfortunately shown that this is not always the case, sometimes players and managers are reluctant to leave thier comfort zone. This is what make Paul Hurst stand out from the rest.

Doubt there is any truth in this rumour. Hurst only got appointed last Wednesday and he would want to evaluate his squad before making any additions. I'm sure he has players in mind that he would like to bring. We already have a lot of better options than this guy in central midfield; Skuse, Adeyemi, Downes and Nydam as well as Huws, Dozzell and Bishop, Ward can even play centrally too. Not a position where we need to strengthen much!

Not many comments here are pointing out the fact that we have midfielders coming out of our ears.

Surely we'd need to clear some out before bringing any more in.

If it's true he probably thought how much game time will I get.

If all our midfielders are fit very little I should think.

Lets move on.

No news or irrelevant news.

Take your pick.

Must be difficult to find stories at this time of year.

Absolute rubbish. Hurst won't be making moves for anyone until he sees what he's got to play with and evaluates the squad for a week or so.
