Former England Man Parker Among Candidates for Town Job
Friday, 27th Apr 2018 10:46

TWTD understands former England international Scott Parker is among the candidates for the Town manager’s job.

The 37-year-old is currently Tottenham’s U18s coach having hung up his boots after four seasons at Fulham last summer.

Parker has long held management ambitions and he began working on his badges and coaching youngsters while he was at the height of his playing career, which saw him represent Charlton, Spurs, Newcastle, West Ham in addition to the Cottagers and a short spell on loan at Norwich, as well as winning 18 full caps.

It’s likely Parker was recommended to Town by David Pleat, who still has strong links with Spurs and is a long-time associate of Blues owner Marcus Evans and certain to be among those he liaises with and takes advice from as he looks to appoint the Blues manager.

Given his lack of first-team management experience, Parker would almost certainly be joined by a more senior figure assisting him, as would presumably also be the case with Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, who is also in the running for the Blues vacancy but is now strongly linked with Rangers.

It’s believed Evans will begin interviewing candidates for the Town job next week, although we understand Sol Campbell is not currently among those who is set to be spoken to, contrary to a report last night.

One name on what’s likely to be a lengthy list, with Evans casting his net widely, as he seeks his new boss is Jaap Stam, former manager of tomorrow’s opponents Reading, who TWTD previously reported was interesting Evans earlier in the month.

Ex-Blues striker Shefki Kuqi remains the bookies’ favourite at 2-1 with Bet Victor followed by Wigan's Paul Cook, 5-1, Campbell at 8-1, Tony Mowbray at 10-1 and then Shrewsbury’s Paul Hurst, Mark Warburton and Taiwan boss Gary White at 16-1.

Evans said earlier in the week that he expects to make his appointment late in May or at the start of June.

Could we have a list of all those who have not yet been linked with the job?

Well we know who to blame if the next appointment goes wrong - Pleat, I should think a majority of these 'first timers' will probably be dismissed if not Evans has got as lot of interviewing to do. Parker is a PASS from me.
Jap Stamm keeps getting mentioned, the worrying thing for me is how he was given a lot more money to work with in his second season after getting in the play-offs previously with little and is now fighting off relegation. No to him as well.

Phil,
Ignore those who are not interested in speculation on the new manager
I am sure most of us are fascinated in who is being linked with the job, however unlikely the link may seem
Imagine going down the pub with these people!

Just in Shep the dog, Pepper Pig and Long John Silver all rumoured to be on Ipswich longlist to replace McCarthy!

Let's play linked manager bingo.

Ashley Cole
Joe Cole
Ronaldinhio
Fabrizio Ravenelli
Alex Bruce
Del Piero
Rahul
Michael Carrick.....

Could go on.

I like the speculation, It's exciting and worrying at the same time.

Stam might be a interesting one but the key point is that Evans is casting a wide net and by the sounds of it talking to and interviewing lots of people. Leaving no stone unturned and undertaking a thorough search......
As it should be

Did Alf Ramsey have 'a senior figure assisting him' when he was appointed manager?

He'd be a good appointment as good player playing in good teams.

However time for Evans to make up his mind.

I'm not completely adverse to a new young manager it worked and is working for Bournemouth and Burnley!? However I think its a huge risk but then isn't any appointment just because a manager worked wonders at one club doesn't mean they'll do it at another and again Howe at Bournemouth is an example shocking at Burnley back to Bournemouth again and gets them in the prem.
For me though I would like to see Paul Cook one of few managers to have out managed a strong Man City team in the cup, did wonders at Portsmouth and now again at Wigan with limited resources for me he ticks all the boxes.

I'm not sure what to make of some of these latest links. I'm pretty cold on them to be honest. Not sure how much faith I'd invest in Pleat. If I was looking to consult anybody I'd talk to somebody like Burley ahead of Pleat. I suppose giving a recommended potential candidate an interview can't hurt, but some of these latest links are real uncertainties.

If there wasn't any names floating about, people would be moaning...Can't win.

Don't like the headline, don't read the story..

Another thought. Was the Sol Campbell story completely off the wall?

Might this have been a situation where a journo picks up 'Evans is talking to David Pleat' and thinks, 'Who about, I wonder? Ooooh. Must be Sol Campbell.' In these days of rushing straight into print, not confirming, not checking with other sources, not thinking it through, the story is missed.

Surely Scott Parker was a more likely topic of discussion. Think about the loan player links. Think about those in the business who want to see the development of young coaches and managers. There are a number of them who would see Scott Parker > Ipswich Town a smart move.

Boxers make comebacks ,its only a matter of time and Mick McCarthy will be linked . The list will just keep growing, M E said himself others will probably be in the frame when season ends, thats why decision may not come till June. Sit back relax and have a chuckle at the list of wannabe's. Alan Titchmarsh is getting fed up with gardening leave I'm told, and could be available after the Chelsea Flower Show, that is mid May, so that fits into M E ,s time scale .

I think Alan Curbishley with Scott Parker and/or Matt Holland would be excellent. With the plethora of young, skilled midfielders we have Scott would be an ideal coach to turn them into regular first team players. His performance a couple of seasons ago against us when he had no knees left (the game where Lua Lua had Emmanuel in his pocket) was nothing short of superb!

@big_gaz67

What a great suggestion, not one that had crossed my mind but Matty Holland back as part of a management team would definitely be one the fans would love.
