Milne: Sheeran Portman Road Gig Would Be Fantastic
Monday, 23rd Apr 2018 10:23

MD Ian Milne says it would be “fantastic” for Portman Road to host a concert by Ed Sheeran at some point in the future.

The Framlingham-based pop star was at Saturday’s game against Aston Villa with fiancée Cherry Seaborn.

“That would be fantastic,” Milne told BBC Radio Suffolk’s Life’s a Pitch. “It would be great for Ipswich, it would be great for the football club.”

Speaking just over a year ago, Sheeran said he anticipated such a concert taking place at some stage.

"I would love to play Portman Road," he said. "I think that would be the closest to home I'd be comfortable playing. I don't know when that's going to happen, but it will happen eventually in my career.”

Artists to previously play on the main pitch include Elton John twice, Barry Manilow, P!nk, REM, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Neil Diamond and Rod Stewart.

This summer the Blues are staging IP1 Live, a two-night music festival in the FanZone which will take place in July featuring acts including Alexander O’Neal, You Me At Six, who were also on Saturday’s Life’s a Pitch, Circa Waves, The Sugarhill Gang and Furious Five.

Full details can be found on at the IP1 Live website where tickets are currently on sale at £25 for the Friday night, £30 for the Saturday and £50 for both.

Much more pressing issues but they haven't said this will take place off searching for a new manager, and in fact the club making money and ways of this happening are important. The business is more than football.

More pressing issues? Generating cash from commercial events isn't something we should be doing?

Would be a good easy fund raiser and then the money could be spent on the getting the paying surface back up to a high quality standard.

Sheeran is hugely popular with youngsters, we need the next generation to have an interest in the club and if he can bring anything whatsoever, it should be welcomed not ridiculed.

Sign him up. I for one would like to see him live. Perhaps he would give ST holders a discount on tickets!!

As the stadium in council owned would the club actually receive anything from this? Asides the revenue from food and drink.

The stadium isn't council-owned, the land on which the stadium stands is. As such the stadium is the club's to rent out for concerts and they'd make that money.

After showing up quite openly to watch Saturday's game, he might think he is some sort of Jonah !

On the other hand he will have enjoyed the atmosphere....my throat only now recovering from 30 minute barrage of Town anthems. Can't believe we dug out the Huckerbee song ! lol

Best 0-4 defeat i have ever been too, maybe he thought so too.

Don't think this is the first time Ed has been seen supporting the Town;so the more he gets involved the better.

I am sure the gig will take place eventually.

Phil I know you are still a 'young man'compared to me;but then most people are. However you have omitted two acts from the early days,American super star(then)Tina Turner and Dire Straits both of which I attended and were great;especiallt Tina unforgettable !

Turning to a super star of today, not sure if Ed is as rich as Marcus;but as bizman says wouldn't it be great if he would buy into Town.Evans could still sell 35% initially, and still be a majority shareholder.

Just a thought Marcus, you could recoup some of the money we are told you are continually putting into the club;and get back the rest when we either get into the Premier League,or you are able to sell the land over the road from the training ground at Playford Road where we currently park out cars. This is right on the edge of the built up area, and in the vicinity of the proposed 'Northern relief rd' ?

Just a thought !

The last red head to play with any enthusiasm at Portman Road was Richard Naylor!!!!!!
