McCarthy Leaves Town With Immediate Effect - Updated With Audio
Tuesday, 10th Apr 2018 22:16

Town boss Mick McCarthy’s departure with immediate effect has been confirmed. McCarthy, who had been due to stay until his contract is up in the summer, announced his departure at the end of his post-match press conference with the club releasing a statement soon afterwards.

“I spoke with Marcus at the weekend and we agreed that it was in the best interests for me, the players and the club that I move on now,”he told the club site.

“I said I would see the season out but it’s been a new experience and it’s not one I have been enjoying to be honest.

“I have continued to do my job to the best of my ability but there is something missing and I’m not comfortable with that.

“I have had a great time here and worked with some great people and to all those who have given me wonderful support over the last five and a half years - and there are many - I want to put on record my personal thanks.

“The players here can look forward to a new challenge with whoever comes in and I want to wish them, the staff and the club the best of fortunes.

“I’ll also be looking forward to a new challenge elsewhere. I’ve still got a lot of football in me.”

Assistant boss Terry Connor has also left the club with immediate effect following tonight’s match. It's understood the duo will say their goodbyes to the players at Playford Road on Thursday.

Town will announce who will be the caretaker-manager in the next day or so but we understand Bryan Klug and Geraint Williams will be put in temporary charge.

“I want to reiterate my thanks to Mick and Terry for their fantastic service to this football club,” owner Marcus Evans added.

“I have always enjoyed a good relationship with Mick and that continues and on behalf of the football club I want to wish him and Terry the very best of luck going forward. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see them back here next season in the away dressing room!”

McCarthy announced his departure, which would have happened whatever tonight's result, at the end of his press conference when asked about the fans’ reaction to debutant Barry Cotter’s substitution, which you can hear below.

“A disgraceful reaction to that. But listen, I won’t have to listen to that again because that’s my last game, I’ll see you when I see you. I’m out of here,” he said as he got up and walked out.

Tonight's game was McCarthy's 279th in charge of the Blues, the 59-year-old having taken charge on November 1st 2012. Of those games, he won 105, drew 78 and lost 96, a win percentage of 37.63.

Earlier in the press conference, McCarthy had commented on the game: “I thought the lads were excellent, the first half was a tough game. Kieffer had hit the cross-bar, we both had chances. I thought we got better and better and was really thrilled with the result.

“We’ve had a clean sheet so that’s pleasing. We’ve not been good at home recently so we might have been a bit nervy, I don’t know, but we played really well in the second half and we should have won by more in the end.

“Jonas is a really good player for us and I’m delighted for him. Jonas is a proper player and I’m delighted for him.”

McCarthy was asked what was left to play for with the Barnsley win mathematically meaning the Blues cannot now make the play-offs: “Pride, points, always want to win.”

Adding to his earlier comments on the performance, he added: “I hope [fans will have left having enjoyed it]. It was a good performance and Barry Cotter caught everybody’s eye, another one that it looks like we’ve done really well on.

“He’s just got personality, he’s got a twinkle in his eye, he’s got technical ability, he’s quick and powerful, he’s got everything to be a player, I’ve just fancied him ever since he walked through the door. He came as a centre-half, I said ‘No chance, he’ll be a right-back’ and that’s what he’s going to be.

“He’s going to be a good player for Ipswich Town. He’s been a really good signing. If that’s his standard on his debut then he's only going to get better.

“He’s great, he’s not a shy boy, he’s a great fella, that’s why I put him in, I knew it wouldn’t faze him, he’s got really good ability as well.”

Was his withdrawal pre-planned? “Not at all, he was knackered. I said to him at half-time, he had his socks down, I said, ‘You tell me if you’re struggling’.

“He’d just let the wide player run on him twice and, of course, he wasn’t going to tell me because he wants to stay on the pitch.

“And that’s the art of management, knowing when to take him off and Wardy was brilliant, he was great,” he added before being asked about the fans’ reaction to the change.

Best of luck to Mick and Terry, you did the club some service! We are in a better place than we were after RK and PJ. We were unlucky this season with injuries. Free of injuries we have not a bad squad just a few areas need improving.....

Football should however be entertaining and MM will not get full marks for his style of football. The fall in attendances meant it was time for him to go, but some us perhaps let ourselves down with the abuse we gave the manager, witnessed it myself last Saturday and as Mick left Griffith Park I had a feeling he would go soon. Mick unfortunately was not always able to rise above the abuse.

I do not feel the misery at this club is quite over yet. If EVANS carries on running this club like he has then history could repeat itself who-ever is in charge. A club owner who has remained anonymous and has took the supporters for granted. A club owner who only let it drag on and refused to assess the damage .SADLY.....It took a poisonous atmosphere and a very empty stadium .for Mick McCarthy to finally walk away. The only way for this club to progress is for the owner...manager....players and supporters to unite. Beginning with Marcus Evans.

That was some "Love In" with MM at the press conference !. Things always run their course and come to an end. MM has had his time and good luck to him elsewhere but for now all I want is a good choice for the new manager. The Cowley brothers look the best bet and I would like to see someone such as George Burley in some sort of Director of Football role. Just please ME don't appoint one of the "Merry Go Round Managers" such as Pardew or Mclaren. Fingers crossed for the right team to be appointed.

The first 3 years of Mick's reign were excellent - saved us from the brink of relegation and got us into the Play-offs. Unfortunately, just like his previous clubs Sunderland & Wolves, he didn't take us to the next level after 3 years. Putting it bluntly the last 2 or so years have been turgid, dull and boring. Thanks Mick for your hard work but you really should have left last summer.

Call me a cynic but as a parting shot lets put a young first appearance full back on who plays a blinder take him off after 50 minutes who leaves the field to a standing ovation followed by the predictable booing so after the game he can once again have a snipe at the fans intimating it was the player not his cranky action the booing was for.
Even Mick mills could not understand what he was up to ,
A 19 year old knackered after 50 minutes do me a favour!!!!
Goodbye and thanks for the first 2 years no thanks for the rest !

Daleyitfc, the last line of your post was at best disgraceful, and could be termed as something that the legal pro's might take an interest in against you, whatever your views wishing bad things on people is just not on and not what I would expect from or have heard from a Town fan since watching my first game in 1958, whatever your age you need to grow up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

warktheline -------- all he is is a very confused person - controlled by the wind, or something just as bizarre.

It's high time he was ignored - since this move they have proved who really cares about the well being of our Club.

And it's NOT them - they've really been exposed now for what they are. Come on you Blues.

I think it's all been said. I wish MM well, but like most others am pleased he has gone because it is in the best interests of the football club. The dwindling attendances due to the boring negative football simply couldn't be ignored. MM did a great job for several seasons, but ultimately the last twenty or so months had been poor. Things got stale and the atmosphere changed in recent months. MM didn't deserve the abuse, yet his own actions slating the fans clearly didn't help.

It should be noted that he had very little financial backing from the owner. That will need to change going forward. The new man must simply be backed ... by the owner. The championship has moved on. Evans will need to react to the changing financial environment.

Alleluia! McCarthy has gone and at least his time here ended with a win (ironic goal and first of season for Jonas Knudsen). Shame McCarthy's time ended on a somewhat sour note but he was and is very stubborn and this didn't help at times. Even so, it is clear to all, he has left Town in better shape than when he arrived, but he didn't get great financial support from Evans and most of the Town players have under performed (letting him and everyone else, including themselves down). Anyway a time for a fresh start for everyone and hopefully the new manager will get more support from the owner?.... COYB!

I for one would like to thank Mick and Terry for their efforts.
When they came in they brought a group of players together and for the first time in a long time formed a team, and once that were not loanees..
That said, along with my son we gave up our season tickets due to the drose being paid.
We move on, here's looking forward to a new manager arriving and making things happen - heres to new era at Portman Road, long over due.
Take your time Mr Evans, get the right person, provide them the right tools to get the job done and lets collectively move this forward.
Thank you Mick and Terry once again..

Has anyone ever asked Swn and co WHY they thought McCarthy was such a good manager? Do they enjoy watching his boring defensive football or is there another reason. that he has driven the fans away in droves tells its own story and I am not sure if many of them will be back. I know several who are now happy to watch local football on a Saturday afternoon. Now I know you and your happy clappers are hoping the new man fails just to be proven right and with our faceless absent owner still here he will not be given money to spend, but it MIGHT just show you there is another way to play the game, open and attacking football that is worth watching and before you bleat relegation, look at a certain Dean Smith at Brentford, small gates, no money, but he plays football the way it should be played AND they are pushing for the playoffs
