St Mirren Manager Ross Latest Boss Linked With Town
Wednesday, 4th Apr 2018 16:36

St Mirren boss Jack Ross is the latest manager to be mentioned in connection with the Blues’ job which will become vacant when Mick McCarthy departs in the summer.

According to the Evening Standard Ross, 41, is among the candidates to become Charlton manager - although the Addicks have now appointed ex-Blues midfielder Lee Bowyer for the remainder of the season - and is also said to be on the Portman Road shortlist, although it’s unlikely Town are at the stage of reducing the candidates to replace McCarthy that far.

Ross, who turned down the chance to manage Barnsley after talks in February, took charge at St Mirren in January 2017 and saved them from relegation. This season Falkirk-born Ross has taken the Buddies into a 12-point lead at the top of the table.

The one-time Hartlepool, Falkirk, St Mirren and Hamilton Academical defender, who won one Scotland B cap during his playing days, began his management career at Alloa in December 2015 having been on the staff at Dumbarton, where he was assistant manager, and then Hearts.

After failing to prevent the Wasps from being relegated into Scottish League One in his first half-season, Ross subsequently took them on a club record 10-game winning run the following campaign prior to his move to his current club.

Elsewhere, Alan Pardew, who left West Brom at the weekend, and Lincoln’s Danny Cowley are currently the bookies’ favourites to take over at Town, both at 4-1 with Bet Victor, although there seems little other than rumour to suggest either are leading candidates.

Behind them in the running are former coach and skipper Tony Mowbray, at 8-1. The Blackburn manager is understood to be very much among owner Marcus Evans’s favoured targets with his one-time boss George Burley also citing the 54-year-old as his number one choice to succeed McCarthy.

Tabloid-linked Steve McClaren is also at 8-1 ahead of former Brentford, Rangers and Nottingham Forest boss Mark Warburton, also the subject of newspaper speculation, and Wigan manager Paul Cook, both at 10-1.

Former Blues striker Shefki Kuqi, who was at Monday’s game against Millwall, having confirmed that he’d be interested in the Town job when on BBC Radio Suffolk's Life’s a Pitch last month, is at 14-1.

McCarthy, who watched the Blues’ U23s beat Cardiff this afternoon, continues to be linked with West Brom having joked with Midlands reporters after the Birmingham game regarding his history with their great rivals Wolves.

“The Albion? That would piss a few people off wouldn’t it?” he laughed when the possibility of him managing at the Hawthorns was put to him. “But you know me, I like pissing people off!”

Now, Sky Sports are reporting that McCarthy would be interested in taking the job, believing he could see them back into the Premier League next season with relegation this term now appearing inevitable.

As previously reported, Baggies technical director Nick Hammond was at Portman Road on Monday watching the Blues' 2-2 draw with Millwall.

Saw an interview with Hurst on sky earlier, once he got passed the managers cliches for this seasons campaign, he sounds proper up for managing a bigger club, and yes that is us for all the ITFC ‘doom mongers' out there!! (Lol)

Farage supporters on here ? Surely not. Perhaps leave voters meant MM to go instead of wrecking jobs. This is sarcastic humour by the way.

Kewell is a good shout. Oh to have a manager to encourage good football again after the last decade or so.

This is going to be so amusing. Cannot wait to see crowds of 19,000 with so many of the armchair anti mick fans returning.
As for pardew or mclaren being appointed. That is great. Just what the masses wanted.
And for the record, i think it is right that mm and ipswich parted company - but there is a certain way of doing it.
There are certain people on here who will moan and carp on about those who support the club being "happy clappers". It isn't - it is called supporting. Something they have not done for years but given an account on this website they can abuse anyone while having their trousers remembering the curly perms of the 80's.
These fans deserve frank de boer as the new manager.

the old fable that "bad things come in 3s" will be over once mick goes, so anyone will be better than the last 3.....

The main thing I'm hearing from all the reaction to the speculation is that we want a young manager and we don't want Cowley because his current team play direct football. Has anyone thought that maybe he he can cut his cloth according to the players available? The main reason he plays direct is because he has Matt Rhead up front who causes chaos when the ball is played up to him. It is possible that he can play differently with a different team. Good managers make the best of the tools at their disposal.

GUS POYET & TARICCO are the men to take ITFC forward. They play an attractive blend of football which is exciting and controlled when needed. They would bring a South American way of thinking to our team and indeed training methods. TARICCO understands Ipswich and that will influence and help Gus Poyet. They can get us out of this hideously difficult division and they will keep us in the Premier league with their style of play and player choice. Go get them Marcus!!

I don't think that just because a player has played for the club ,they would be right choice , there are one or two that could have been or could be ,but not all. I think some people are too tied up with '' understanding the Ipswich way '' .

The thought of Pardew just scares the hell out of me!! Don't think Burley would want it but I'd be happy with him or the Mowbray / Venue duo in charge. There must be a job for George somewhere in the club though. We must get someone who understands the true Ipswich way and will entertain the fans.

Agreed dirty.
Doesn't have to be an ex town man.
However, Burleys piece in the EADT was quite inspirational I thought.
It would be every ipswich fans dream for wark, mills and himself to be involved somehow.
Still going Dutch but some excellent suggestions above.

After reading this and it's hard not to want to give George another chance to steer the ship again:

Whoever Evans goes for he will need to back him financially as McArthey hasn't had any and done pretty well on a budget

I can't comment on Ross as I have never heard of him. What about Harry Redknapp? He said that Birmingham could have been his last job as manager after they sacked him but he might fancy one last Hurrah! I'd love to see him as Ipswich manager. Would also be happy with Burley back, but I don't think Mowbray would do any better than our last few managers.

North Stand Veteran :Like you I would prefer the Dutchman Stejin(Don't know spelling). The one who is managing in the Eredivisie currently;but doesn't appear in the betting ! .Not to be confused with the others who are currently out of work, and have just been joined by Jimmy Floyd Hasselbank who has just been sacked by Northampton.

Others are the Wigan,Shrewsbury managers and Tony Mowbray at Blackburn, all of whom are currently in post;so they might cost Marcus a few bob, which we know from past experience he tries to avoid if possible. However it is obvious that those out of work 'although cheaper, are less likely to make a good job of managing Town as otherwise they would be in work.
The Scot seems ok as well, not sure about the Cowleys;but unless one looks carefully at their CV's,and background etc it is difficult for us fans to judge;but then fortunately we wont be involved.

Even though it isn't up to us,definitely don't want Pardew or McClaren as this wouldn't enthuse the punters or bring in many more season tickets I fear.
