Jones: Downes Outstanding on Luton Debut
Sunday, 4th Feb 2018 10:28

Luton manager Nathan Jones was full of praise for on-loan Blues midfielder Flynn Downes following an “outstanding” debut as the League Two leaders beat Exeter City 1-0 at Kenilworth Road on Saturday.

“He was outstanding,” Jones told Luton Today. “It’s as if he lives here in terms of the way he went about the pitch, the confidence he played with, the security and everything he had.

“But we kind of knew what we were getting, we just hoped he transforms that form that he’s had for Ipswich in here and he was absolutely outstanding, he really was.

“He will be minimum Championship player and we’re just so happy that Mick [McCarthy] and Ipswich had decided to entrust us with him here.

”His development will continue here and we’ll hand him back as a Championship player.”

The 19-year-old joined the Hatters on loan for the rest of the season on deadline day.

Elsewhere, Pat Webber played the full 90 minutes and Conor McKendry came on as an 68th minute sub as their loan side Braintree Town drew 0-0 away at Havant & Waterlooville in the Vanarama National League South. The duo joined the Iron on an initial month’s loan on Friday.

In League One, Josh Emmanuel played the full 90 minutes as Rotherham beat AFC Wimbledon 2-0.

Winger Danny Rowe also played the full game for his loan club Lincoln as the Imps drew 2-2 with Swindon in League Two at Sincil Bank.

Defender Luke Woolfenden played the full 90 minutes for Bromley as they drew 1-1 at Workington in the FA Trophy.

Good to see these players all getting 90 minutes in, they should all come back stronger next season. Best of luck lads.

No Sh$t sherlock.

At least he won't have his game beaten out of him by MM.

Roll on next season when are midfield will look like this:-

Andre Huws Bishop Downes/Nydam

I just don't get it.. why isn't he playing in our midfield.. what's the point of an academy when all we do is ship them out on loan and then get in short term replacements

Think of these loans as a "finishing school" for young footballers, grubbyoik. They come back with a load of competitive match experience, in Downes' case as part of a table-topping team chasing promotion. He's also coming back from an injury, so possibly not best to throw his straight back into our own first team.

Too good to be there...heavens knows why Mick sent him on loan with our injury hit midfield. According to the BBC website he was playing in central defence !?!

Mick was the one who wanted to send him out on loan? And yet people attack him on this post for what reason? Good look to Flynn and firmly expect him to come back a key player.

Why is everything for tomorrow.. for the future .. for next season.. what about today? Surely today is the most important day..

OwainG - so who's decision was it to send him out on loan?

Next season Dienes will be heavily monitored by PL Clubs and he will be an integral part of our team. Bishop may have just missed the boat now, sadly.

But just imagine if we can have Downes, Dozzell, Bishop ,Huws, Adeyemi, Ward as our midfield choices!

......... surpise, surprise - NOT. He should be here at Portman Road doing his stuff.

He must have a better home pitch to play on tho' - not too many decent Clubs pitch in a more scruffy state than Portman Road right now, even in the lower leagues.

Guthrum.. we seem to start every season with a new batch of young players in the team and on the bench... come the final quarter of the season they are nowhere to be seen... usually replaced by short term loans .. not one player in the 1st team squad from our academy on Saturday. If Dowes is good and fit enough for Luton then he's good and fit enough for us.

Very true ArnieM, however even if we did have Downes, Dozzell, Bishop ,Huws, Adeyemi, Ward available Skuse and Connelly would still play week in week out in the CM roles.

I like many others would rather see us developing our own players now rather than other clubs players. Connelly has been brilliant but he is not ours.
CCV looks ok but again is not ours and he is blocking Websters development
Celina on the other hand is slightly different as we have no natural replacement...not that I have seen..

One concern I have is that all the players coming through the ranks are all too small and lightweight. (Downes, Dozzell, Bishop ,Morris, Patterson...even the likes of Hyam) I think the academy needs to look at the recruitment policy

Although great to read this is nit great surprise of you saw him early season.
Mick just hasn't got confidence in youngsters ...one step that maybe still have that individual flair that mick hasn't yet beaten out of them....this no more highlighted when one of our own...Webster gets put on the bench whilst a temp loanee gets game time ...the world and mick has gone mad !!

Fantastic, well done Downes.

90 every week between now / May. Tear it up, come back ready to rumble next year.

Win/win this.

As much as I am frustrated about Flynn not being used in our first team, loans can work really well and players go back to their parent club better and ready to establish themselves

Harry Kane had four loan deals (including the Scum) and he didn't turn out too bad !

you're spot on Heathen.

Maybe I'm impatient but I'd rather see Flynne having his MOM for us. Yesterday Skuse wasn't effective so with a new boss I'm hoping that Fynne will get a chance along with others, just a shame that McDonnell was released too soon.
IF Evans will be backing the team next season then I'd like to sign Connelly as I doubt he'll be too expensive. Everton will be looking further afield unless they come down.

To some on here it,s just another chance to have a pop at McCarthy. I wasn,t at all happy at his appointment here in the first place and hope he goes at the end of the season, for his sake as much as ours. But sometimes he does get things right and loans, like them or loathe them are part and parcel of the game now. As NITFC said, it didn,t do Kane any harm.

Does Downes look a bit like Harry Kane in that pic?

Unlike Bluebore to take such a negative stance on this...

I undersand a loan of young players in most cases but we never loaned out Dyer and this lad although a different type of player is a great young talent. Good enough to stay here and get game experience. Personally I thought he was great when he played here.

And we are short of midfielders. Strange decision Imo.

its a clever idea to loan out our talented youngsters so mick doesn't destroy them...
