Carayol Signing Confirmed
Wednesday, 31st Jan 2018 20:55

Town have confirmed the signing of winger Mustapha Carayol on a deal to the end of the season. TWTD was first to break the news that the 29-year-old was set to leave Forest to join the Blues on a free transfer earlier this afternoon.

Carayol’s Forest contract, which was up at the end of the season, was cancelled by mutual consent this afternoon and he joins the Blues in much the same way as Stephen Gleeson earlier in the month, Town taking on the remaining months of his City Ground deal.

“The gaffer showed interest in me before I signed for Forest so as soon as I knew Ipswich were keen on me it was an easy decision,” Carayol, who will wear the number 32 shirt, told iFollow Ipswich.

“I know a lot about Ipswich. I have played against the team a few times and know a lot of the players here. I saw Cole Skuse in Dubai a couple of years ago and he was trying to convince me to sign!

“I spoke to Frank Nouble a few hours back and he said ‘Just go there. You’ll enjoy it’. Frank is a good friend of mine so I couldn’t have got any better advice really.

“Forest was probably the most frustrating time of my career so I’ve come here to play games and I’ll work as hard as I can. I want to make a big impact here and help the team.

“I’m here until the end of the season. That is my focus for now but hopefully I can impress the gaffer and the fans and I can show the gaffer I’m worth keeping beyond the summer.”

Carayol, the first Gambia international to represent the Blues, was a youth player with Swindon and Macclesfield before breaking into senior football with the MK Dons.

He spent time on loan with Crawley before joining Torquay on a permanent basis prior to a loan stint with Kettering.

Lincoln was his next port of call before he moved on to Bristol Rovers where he really made his name, securing a move to Middlesbrough in the summer of 2012.

He scored his first league goal on his Championship debut for the Teessiders in their 2-0 victory over the Blues at the Riverside in August 2012.

Having had spells out on loan at Brighton, Huddersfield and Leeds, the 5ft 11in tall pacy wideman joined Forest after leaving Boro - then managed by current Tricky Trees boss Aitor Karanka - by mutual consent in August 2016, signing a two-year deal.

While at the City Ground, Carayol made only 17 starts and 21 sub appearances, scoring three goals.

However, he remained in their first team squad and started Saturday's 2-1 FA Cup defeat at Hull before being replaced at half-time.

Carayol’s signing marks the last of Town’s January business with deadline day seeing no high profile exits.

While there was some interest in David McGoldrick from a Championship club understood to be Bolton Wanderers, who were briefly odds-on to sign him with one bookie this evening, the striker will remain at Portman Road for the final months of his contract.

Reports of renewed Crystal Palace interest in Bartosz Bialkowski were purely speculative.

Decent player. Gives us another attacking option for the second half of the season. If he does well he will stay longer if he doesn't then nothing is really lost. Good move all round

As soon as match fit should be involved immediately. Very decent championship winger, very very direct. Has pure lightning speed, one of the quickest players I've ever seen live, up there with Ryan Fraser.

Left wing?...same position as Celina, I wonder if he has the same quality as Celina. The 2 goals since 2016 probably says not, Mick probably hoping to get him on a free if he does okay here.

Why is Mick getting players in basically on a 'trial' period now if he's not going to be here after May, or is he?

If he's so great why has he had 15 clubs and usually lasts less than a season?

The reason we are signing players on trial basis is because Mick McCarthy has no intention of leaving until he has another big pay check to go to. So for the foreseable future he'll continue to take the Mick at Portman Road.

I wish the lad well but he has no pedigree or history within the game a Division One player at the best.

It's good when people say nice things about our club and I hope he succeeds. But what is the ffin point. Why are we not playing our youngsters play offs are shot relegation is unlikely and a new manager is around the courner, what the fcuk. Oh and why lend one of our best prospects Downes out to Mickey Mouse football. MM what a plank.

Although I welcome any new additions to the depleted squad, it is a wonder why the photographer never gets them to say Cheese! Or Sausages!! Or whatever it is people are told to say these days. I am neither over or under whelmed by this signing and neither is Mustapha by the looks of things.

Roll on end of season and massive change or even less season ticket sales .
Average squad that will finish well below the playoffs with MM failing his target again . Only achieved under Jewells squad

Used mainly as a sub at Forest I understand. He did some on against Norwich and put in the cross which Murphy scored from. As we were expecting no one, I think we can be glad Carayol has come in as it does give us another option. We badly needed options from the bench against Wolves but had no one to bring on to make a difference. Carayol has every incentive to prove himself now to the manager and fans and to earn a longer contract, so best of luck to him.

I think this signing is good business and makes the case that MM may finally go this summer.
It will give a new manager the choice of keeping him if he is on a new manager's radar.
Is there hope. We should be safe now so maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel. PLEASE!!!!
Lets us give Carayol every encouragement.

51blue - I reckon he's saving his facial muscles for when he scores a hat-trick on Saturday! (or maybe on Sun 18/2 ... )

Welcome Mustapha, looking forward to seeing some much-needed greased-lightning pace for us!

Him on one wing, Celina on the other, time for the midfield to earn their worth, in supplying the perfect pass, not just trying to help a defence that should be able to man mark the opponents.

(Naaaah he/she is not another loanee, sorry!)

YOU NEVER WALKED ALONE ...MICK!

When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of the storm
Is a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark

Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Tho' your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You never walked alone ... Mick!
