Fowler Completes Aldershot Switch
Wednesday, 31st Jan 2018 14:05

Aldershot have confirmed the signing of Blues defender George Fowler on a permanent basis, the 20-year-old having been on loan with the Vanarama National League club since August.

Former Debenham High School pupil Fowler, who moves on a free transfer, has signed a deal which runs until the summer of 2019.

Speaking about academy product Fowler’s impending move to the Shots on Friday, manager Mick McCarthy said: “He is [joining Aldershot], that’s the plan. They want to take him and equally he’s not going to get in the first team here.

"And so rather than being in a scrum with Adam [McDonnell, who joined Aldershot onapermanent basis last week] and another 1,000 players in the summer, I think it’s great that Gary Waddock likes them.

"They’re playing, they can improve and we will have a sell-on clause so if they do sell them we would be reimbursed, I guess, for their development.”

I think this is a great move all around - he is behind Smith and Woolfy and therefore would probably get released at the end of the season - this way he gets a club before the big scrum and we also get a sell on clause if he does make it

Sometimes I think people forget that most academy players don't make it - and this whole idea of 'giving them a chance' is just fine but they have to be ready for that chance - and clearly George isn't

I disagree with ‘yorkshire' as Fowler played 90mins against Palace in the cup whereas Smith played 10, so i do not believe he was behind him in the pecking order. I believe he is a better defender than Smith or Woolfy, reads the game well, is quicker than Smith, but perhaps not tall enough for McCarthy even though he is very good in the air.
Smith is at Chelmsford (league below Aldershot) Woolfy at Bromley (same league as Aldershot), i do not see. a clamour of div 1/2 teams looking for their services.
McCarthy said Smith will get a 1 year deal and hopefully be loaned out, so presume he is not ready either!
We also have the mystery of Pat Webber recently being given a new 2 yr deal although he was on trial with Aldershot pre-season and they sent him back!
I wish George all the very best and hope he will have a good career.

Henrysam - you are wrong about a few things there - firstly Webber was on trial with a view to loan - not to sell. He is also predominantly a left back

One of the reasons why L1 and L2 clubs haven't taken these players is that they can only do loans during the window now - and if the player returns like Smith did then he couldn't go back

In terms of where they are - well that is subjective but Fowler is older and at 20 should be a lot closer to first team - he may have started the palace game but MM has said that he was impressed with Smith since his loan so I would imagine he would start now - also Woolfy made the bench at the start of the season over the pair of them

Anyways it is a fobe deal now - let's hope he goes on to have a great career

Been to watch Aldershot fc a few times over the last 18 months and have been impressed with the ability Gary Waddock and James Rowe have in getting our players to play well for them. They play attacking entertains football without being reckless. Wouldn't mind this foreword thinking management team down here if ever a vacancy occurs. I'm sure both Adam and George will benefit from their time there.

Yorkshire..not arguing with you but Fowler and Smith are the same age, Woolfy is a year younger. Yes, Webber was on trial with a view to loan but they didn't rate him but comes back and gets a 2yr deal at itfc..different opinions i suppose. Anyway, like you say a done deal now and good luck to them.
