McCarthy Favourite to Succeed Ireland Boss O'Neill
Thursday, 11th Jan 2018 16:44

Blues boss Mick McCarthy is listed as one bookmaker’s favourite for the Republic of Ireland job should current incumbent Martin O’Neill depart for Stoke City.

O’Neill has held talks with the Potters, although they are also understood to have spoken to Espanyol manager Quique Sanchez Flores, who is believed to be their top target.

Former Irish international centre-half McCarthy was previously in charge of Ireland for more than five years from 1996 and took them to the second round of the 2002 World Cup where they lost on penalties to Spain.

Paddy Power lists the Town manager as their 7-2 favourite - at the time of writing - to succeed O’Neill should he move on, with ex-Blues manager Roy Keane, currently the former Northern Irish international’s assistant, second in the running at 6-1.

McCarthy was strongly linked with a return to the Ireland job in 2013 before O’Neill was handed the role.

Ireland failed to qualify for this summer’s World Cup in Russia after being beaten 5-1 by Denmark in a play-off, all the goals coming in the second leg in Dublin.

O’Neill has verbally agreed a two-year extension to his Ireland contract but is yet to put pen to paper, which means he is currently effectively a free agent.

McCarthy’s Town contract is up at the end of the season and appears likely to leave the Blues, despite the club having an option to keep him for two further seasons.

don't worry, MMs so good he could do both jobs together...

but seriously, nothing will happen till may anyway, they wont pay the compensation for the sake of 5 months when they have nothing pressing to prepare for

Micky has had his time and let's face it ran out of ideas and a change is what's needed but I ask my fellow supporters who will come to our rescue?

Well I hoped He'd get the job back in 2013. Let's hope he gets it this time, better late than never. With my Irish roots it will hurt having to watch him ruin them too.

If you dont want to support the club because of what some fans say, then i venture to suggest youre not a fan in the first place. Hardly an apt name you have there

Because in the spur of this (recurring btw) news & subsequent semi-silly euphoria we the Anti-Mick'ers mustn't forget this here famous MM broadside must we now??? lol:

"I will be back here next year, EVEN if that's just to annoy the people who don't like me!"

Ohhhh and speaking of memorable dinosauric broadsides ...and Leeds United ...this even more evergreenish one here from the ehmmm ALWAYS sweet-talking albeit recently self-admitted "I-Am-A-Beligerent-F@ck!" regarding the result of the January 2014 encounter with Saturday's opponent, (and as ultra compulsory with the Dino very talked-up opponent!) The Whites:

"Some people might be frustrated with that? Some people can f@ck off!"

Aye the Dino, his by-noooo-means *DELUDED* tactical genius :-), super entertaining & 100% value for your hard earned money each & every time GLAMOUR-footbal :-), and of course his awesome (NOT!) foul lingo ...is gonna be sorely sorely missed at ITFC ...one day ... but when exactly that day arises I'm not so sure to be perfectly honest.

As a matter of fact just before Christmas I found myself putting down 50 quid on him cozily staying on to 2020 ...at least! Uhuuu! This immediately after I have had a strange hmmmm "ethereal rendezvous" with the late Carl Sagan :-) :-) -- you know him who use to know EVERYTHING about The Cosmos & 'Celestial Intervention' etc. in our every day life -- and to cut it short he left me with the unmistakable & very persuasive impression that our very own fanUNfriendly and overly pleased with ZERO shots-on-target against reserve laden opponents , dino-manager, i.e. 'Tyrannosaurus Terribilis Arrogantus Rex of Suffolk', would very likely get his *FREEWHEELING* 2-year contract option invoked by the equal parts football-indifferent equal parts football-clueless Marvelous Marcus & his snake oil selling mouthpiece Immaculate Ian ...and if so overwhelmingly because: Both of these strictly businessmen neither KNOW nor CARE any better about our once-upon-a-time proud & revered football club!!!

But we shall see ...cause as promised all good does come to those who wait, eventually, right??? lol

Yet another of the moneyed old school dinosaurs that regularly do over clubs, suck as much life out of a club, and as much money. Then disappear only to reappear somewhere else as unfortunate for the cycle to begin again. See Pulis, Pardew, Bruce, etc....
and Big Mick always leaves a club in a precarious state with relegation a few months away.
If this is football nowadays you can stick it.

I'd love for MM to go.

But seriously why would Ireland want him? Surely they'd want a younger manager with ideas and drive.

...and for those that say 'be careful what you wish for'...

Sorry but we are at the point where pretty much any change would be good. The players we have aren't top players, but they are decent enough and if they were encouraged and trained to play decent football and pass to a player instead of hoofing it upfield they'd do a lot better and certainly no worse than they are now.

Listened to the Milne interview on Suffolk. This bloke talks so much rubbish. The only winners with Gambling are not the 'punters "

Whether MM stays or goes our key challenges are to get a decent midfield on the park and sorting out our defence. We pretty much have the raw material for a good midfield when each one of them is fit the big question is will we have enough back this season to make a difference. The defence just requires two decent cbs. Hopefully we will get them this month. To me it's not likely to matter much who the manager is until we can field a decent midfield as midfield is needed to be able to play attractive football
