Town's Season Tickets Among Championship's Most Expensive
Wednesday, 15th Nov 2017 23:26

Town’s cheapest adult season ticket is the third-highest priced in the Championship, according to the BBC’s Price of Football 2017 survey, which has been released this evening.

A lower tier adult season ticket at Portman Road costs £423 with only Sheffield Wednesday (£455) and Norwich City (£499.50) pricing their cheapest seat higher.

Similarly, only two Championship clubs' most expensive adult season ticket is priced higher than Town’s (£842), Norwich City (£856.50) and Fulham (£929).

The Blues controversially raised adult season ticket prices by 1.5 per cent ahead of the 2017/18 campaign with numbers subsequently dropping by about 2,000 to around the 10,500 mark.

In last year’s Price of Football survey Town had the joint-highest-priced cheapest matchday ticket (£30). In the summer the Blues reduced their price to £25 but that’s still the joint-third highest this season along with two other clubs.

Only Leeds (£26) and Middlesbrough (£27) have more expensive cheapest seats with the survey finding that home matchday prices in the Championship had generally come down from an average of £22.11 last year to £20.58 this season.

According to the Price of Football, the average price of an away ticket in the Championship is the highest in any division in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Town’s cheapest away ticket (£25) is the joint-sixth highest in the division, as is their most expensive away seat (£35).

In the summer, the Blues wrote to the other Championship clubs to try to arrange a reciprocal price cap of £25 on away match tickets.

Town offered to put a ceiling of £25 on away seats at Portman Road for a rival club's fans if they agreed to do the same when Town visit their stadium. The initiative was welcomed by most other clubs, although a number, including Middlesbrough, QPR and Leeds, opted not to take part.

A poll of 1,000 young adult fans across the country carried out as part of the Price of Football survey found ticket prices were an obstacle to four in five of them attending more regularly, Town having previously identified a similar issue more locally.

In order to address this, a new concession for supporters aged under-23 was introduced in the summer, while the previous under-16s price band is now available to under-19s.

The Price of Football survey results can be found in full here.

Ridiculous to see how many clubs are run as businesses in the modern day. Lower the ticket prices, get bigger gates and get the atmosphere back at PR!! The place was rocking last season when Newcastle were playing here and look what happened, we won! That's what we want and the keast we bloody deserve after this management...

Of course they are high, someone has to cover the 15,000 empty seats.

A lots been made of this already, however it's clear the club realise they've made a mistake for this season. I will, as many others, be very interested to see how they rectify this mistake for next term.

Norwich / Wendy both have over 20,000 and charge the most in the league - so shows if people are happy with the direction of the club, price is not a factor.

We however aren't in that position so club - over to you. We need 2500 minimum extra next term.

People simply are no longer prepared to buy matchday tickets for many a fixture. People are a lot more prudent. Norwich, sure people had no issue with shelling out 25. However, even for Norwich they did for 30. Pretty much all the 25 quid seats were lapped up, thousands of 30 not so another issue for the club to fix next year.

I would suggest -
* Lowering adult prices by 5-8%.
* Lowering the older category down from 65-60.
* Scrap this laughable 5 quid extra upper tier / lower tier mumbo jumbo. Do 20 quid a pop for match day.

I DO however applaud for this season......
* The end to 2.50 matchday hikes.
*Lowering tickets 2.50
* 25 quid for away fans if the other club agrees.

Some good work this season, g'wan Milne and co, increase it for next term...........

* Sidenote - by lower 5-8% I mean adult season ticket. Perhaps work out the reduction based on 20 quid tickets as the maths is just a punt.

We really must do better to get people back.

I agree FromIpswichToPhoenix as most of us are able to
Spread out over two seats. On that basis we must have some of the cheapest season tickets 😀

Geographically Ipswich's catchment doesn't help – surrounded by fields on one side, and sea on the other means we have a much smaller pool of potential fans than most clubs: Yet another reason to reduce the prices and fill the ground.

The £25 away price initiative was a step in the right direction but £20 for ALL tickets, home or away would be fair and lets face it the clubs do not rely on turnstile clicks for income anymore. More important to have a fuller ground.

I think Town have got tickets at a fair level. We are almost a top six club this season. If ME spends the cash on a new manager and some good new players £25 is about right.

Town one of the most expensive ST's in the league shocker !!!

Crap football for most part

Owner who couldn't give a shyte about his “ toy” anymore, and shows little REAL interest in ITFC .

Fans leaving in their droves season on season and the Club then pulls its master stroke by putting UP prices of the die hard middle aged fans.

Little wonder the Club is dying on its feet is it !

Looking at the bbc report, town need to lower there season ticket prices by 20 to 25% to bring in line with other clubs!

I think it's difficult for Ipswich to lower prices if they want to compete, too many teams now have passed us by and got to the premiership with all the riches and parachute payments that brings.

Yes we could lower prices but who's to say the fans will come back, we'll still have a half empty stadium with less income.

The only way we can get fans back is to try and do it on the cheap, win matches, and be competitive for a top 6 place.

Also, people just don't go so much these days what with access to football on TV, look at the top flight games very rarely are they full.

Marcus Evans greed comes to the fore once more...little entertainment + over priced tickets = low crowds

The comparison in ticket price should be taken into account with the outlay on playing squad , I for one do not mind paying more if the players are better .
Are we competing at the top end on signings ? No where near probably bottom 6 ?
Why should we pay more to see less quality players season after season top scorer sold , best defender sold or released , cannot keep hold of best loan players .
Add to that one of the highest paid managers in the league and crap football and you have a recipe for disaster and dwindling crowds

We were 9th in the table on the cost of signings this summer...previous seasons we must have been in the bottom 4 or 5.

Says all you need to know about the how the club is run and how much they care about the fans. Plus 3rd worst goals at home record for cost to see us score at home. That's score not win!

At the end of the day, football is entertainment.

You pay to see an exhibition, in some ways it's the biggest con because we forget we should be entertained. We follow the club regardless of the way the team is performing which is a great commitment but would you continue to watch something on TV, at the Cinema, a Concert etc etc when you don't just leave unhappy but very disappointed and more times affecting your mood during valuable weekend time with your families.

I hope next season we have a new manager and a bit more excitement around the club, especially as I am a 21 year old fan and I can say the threat of the new streaming service which will soon be available may lose even more fans or at least delay new fans from visiting Portman Road.

Well Ipswich Town are always near the top where this survey s concerned
.Fans don't attend for many reasons work, price, standard of football, dislike of the managers and owners attitude.
Evans must have realised that the retrospective increase for those season ticket holders who were already on the season ticket concession for the over 60's would stop some people going, which of course it has(see chrishants above);but he goes ahead just the same.

I am afraid that Town are unfortunate to be currently lumbered by a Manager who is only here for the money;and an owner who is anonymous, and seems to have little interest in the club;so why he doesn't sell up is beyond me!

Is it any wonder why folk aren't rushing back to PR? Despite a decent start to the season, the standard of football does not justify those prices.
