Rotherham Boss Set to Quiz McCarthy on Plans for Loan Striker Moore
Thursday, 19th Oct 2017 15:37

Rotherham boss Paul Warne says he’ll speak to his Town counterpart Mick McCarthy regarding his January plans for Kieffer Moore, who is on loan with the Millers, next week.

Moore has netted 10 goals in 14 games for the South Yorkshire side - League One's joint-top score along with ex-Town frontman Jack Marriott - since joining them in July on a season-long loan but with the Blues able to cut his spell short in January.

“I’ll probably leave it until after the weekend,” Warne told the Sheffield Star. “I’ll let Mick have their game first. I’ll speak to him and see if I can know which way the water is flowing, if you see what I mean.

“If Mick says, ‘He’s perfect for me, there’s no way you can have him’, that’s fine. I have got no issue with that. He’s already doing me a favour letting me have him. I’d be disappointed, obviously.

“He might say that he’s going to watch him a few more times, which I think will be his default answer. I can get a gauge, and I can also apologise for our first-half performance at Wimbledon!”

McCarthy watched Rotherham’s 3-1 defeat at AFC Wimbledon at Kingsmeadow on Tuesday evening, in which fellow on-loan Blue Josh Emmanuel was an unused sub.

“Mick texted me to ask if Kieffer was playing and when I said he was he decided to come along and watch him,” Warne told BBC Radio Sheffield.

“I can't speak for him but I presume he saw that although it wasn't the best game for Kieffer he was a physical presence in a poor game. He probably thinks that he led the line quite well in an ugly game.

"There wasn't a lot to judge him on so I presume he will watch him, as will other people, again.

“The figurehead of the team, the centre-forward, is only as good as what's behind him. If he doesn't get given chances or balls in the right positions then he isn't going to score.

“I think the lads went too direct to him on Tuesday so I feel for him a bit. And that's not Kieffer's fault, he's such a good player that the lads thought we'll just get it to Kieffer.

“Away from home he doesn't get the same opportunities as he does at home. We are more an attacking side at home with it being a different sort of game away from home. At the moment he's sort of drowning in his own success.”

Moore, 25, is contracted to the Blues until the end of the season with Town having an option to extend his spell for a further year.

If we didn't already have him, people would be saying why don't we take a look at kiefer Moore, he's banging then in at Rotherham... big strong and coping in league 1.... so tell them no thanks and bring him back, isn't that what you loan a young striker out for, experience to come back and play for us

If there's uncertainty, then no better test than to see if he gets 10 more in the second half of the season - especially as the season back home looks to be an indifferent one in which we seem to have enough fire-power to stay safe.

Much as I was never sold on Kieffer based on his performances with us, his form at Rotherham frankly demands another chance in our team. I know there is something of a culture of making a profit where one is to be had, but we've been bitten selling players like this numerous times in recent years.

Genuinely won't be that bothered if we sell him, but only for a nicely over inflated price.

He looked bad in the championship last year. He is benefitting from attacking players putting it on a plate for him week after week at the moment, he won't get that at Portman road unfortanetly.

Equally I would enjoy seeing him given another chance, he could well prove me wrong. It will probably depend on how our other strikers are doing come January...and McGoldrick's fitness!

If he was a Rotherham player and available on a free transfer in January there would be many on here clamouring for us to sign him! We need to wait and see if his form continues and how our current preferred strikers are doing come January.

I do not believe it is just a case of found his level, but it does Just goes to prove what giving the lad a run of games can do
He had 15 mins here and 10 mins there under Mick and everyone says he is no good.
Also Paul Warne sums it up a treat
“The figurehead of the team, the centre-forward, is only as good as what's behind him. If he doesn't get given chances or balls in the right positions then he isn't going to score.

100 % right Paul, you cannot just hoof the ball to him (Take note Mick) and hope something happens

I think we should keep him without a shadow of doubt. The next manager may be able to get even more out of him.
As also mentioned, we would all be clambering to sign players like this from League 1, Young, Physical, and also knows where the goal is. I wish he was still here now however hopefully this loan will make him into an even better player...FOR US !!!

We don't need to make a decision until January so why discuss it now. Who knows how many fit strikers we will have at that time. However, Moore will learn far more playing for Rotherham than for our U23s so leave him there unless he's going to get regular game time.
