McCarthy Likes "Pretty Much Everything" About New Recruit Drinan
Thursday, 12th Oct 2017 15:15

Town boss Mick McCarthy says he likes “pretty much everything” about striker Aaron Drinan, whose move to the Blues from Waterford is set to be confirmed when the transfer window opens in January. On Sunday, TWTD revealed that a deal had been agreed with the League of Ireland First Division champions to sign the 19-year-old.

Asked what he likes about centre forward Drinan, who was on trial at Playford Road in August along with Waterford team-mate John Martin, McCarthy said: “Pretty much everything. He’s been in and trained with us and he’s here with us now. I’m very pleased with him.”

He added: “He’s here with us now, he’s here training with us and we expect to sign him in January.”

Will the former Cork City, Cobh Ramblers and Carrigaline United youngster, who is understood to have cost the Blues €100,000 (£90,000), have a chance of breaking into the first team once his move is rubber-stamped once the window opens?

“That’s the magic question, isn’t it?" McCarthy added. "I hope so, I always do, but he’s come in and trained with us, he didn’t look out of place.

“That’s the reason we’ve taken him in and I’m looking forward to working with him and getting TC working with him in front of goal. I think he will, eventually, be a first-team player. Whenever that is, I don’t know.”

Speaking yesterday, Waterford director of football Pat Fenlon said 18-year-old Martin would be joining the Blues for a second trial spell.

Quizzed on Martin, McCarthy added: “The other chap came in, they both came in together. At this moment in time there’s nothing happening.”

Sounds good. Hopefully Kieffer Moore will carry on improving at Rotherham and be like a new signing too.

Will be interested to see how this turns out, although given the form that Moore is showing in League One, I would be inclined to see us give him another go here. Makes me wonder if Freddie Sears still fits into Mick's future plans.

These two lads are in their late teens, and it seems unlikely that they will feature in the first team, certainly this season.

listened to the news conference, and recall Mick saying that he is not sure they will feature in the first team under him.Which could suggest that he doesn't see his contract being extended,or is that wishful thinking.

Returning to the Waterford Eire lads,I said when it was first mooted that we have had little success with players Mick has brought over from the Emerald Isle.Number must be in double figures now;so on the law of averages would expect one or two to make the grade.

However the standard is so much lower over there, and although their club has just won the 2nd tier;it is far below our Championship level.Having said that Martin O'Neil, and Roy Keane(remember him?)have just qualified for the World up play offs.

Keep an eye on Irish league by all means;but it would be nice also if Mr Evans budget could stretch to the near Continent.I presume with the strong Euro, and the weak pound that players will now cost more;but this also applies to Southern Ireland, and there are loads of players over here from Europe who have made the grade !

Seasider: Re number of players brought over by MM from the Irish League being in double figures, my memory must be failing me but the only signings I can recall are McDonnell and Doherty. Doherty returned after failing to settle, McDonnell is doing well on loan. Who are the others?
