Blues and Wigan Linked With Ex-Bolton Midfielder
Sunday, 24th Sep 2017 11:35

Town and Wigan Athletic are claimed to be keen on free agent former Bolton Wanderers midfielder Jay Spearing.

The 28-year-old is a free agent having left the Trotters at the end of last season and has recently been training with League One Blackpool.

According to The Sun on Sunday, Blues boss Mick McCarthy is considering a move for the one-time Liverpool trainee, while the League One Latics are also eyeing the former Leicester and Blackburn loan player.

Town targeting another central midfielder would be a surprise with that area of the squad appearing well covered with McCarthy expecting Emyr Huws (achilles) and Teddy Bishop (groin) to be back from injury after the next international break.

Can only see us signing him if Huws' injury is worse than we're led to believe. Decent player for a free transfer and the kind of gritty/pitbull player that McCarthy loves so much.

Could be papertalk or there might be something in this as Hyam just can't get fit.

Hard to believe that he is now a free agent, he left Liverpool to join Bolton for £5m!!

Need some creativity in the midfield, not another bulldog, we have enough those presently playing Centre midfield!

I guess signing Spearing would allow bishop and probably hyam going out on loan to get fit

Calling him just a Liverpool trainee seems a bit harsh - he did play 30+ times for their first team!

Really can't see there being anything in this. I hope not, as we have some talented youngsters who are doing okay.

Stick with our youth, whether Huws is out long term or not.

Definitely give Downes and Nydam a chance, youth over freebies!

No big shock if this happens. Huws is going to be out a while still and Dozzell's injury will keep him out for most of the season. iMO a reasonable signing. We can't expect our present midfielders (Adeyemi/Skuse etc) to all stay injury free. We do lack holding midfielders at the moment.

I would say Spearing is ideal, if I knew what I was on about

Always thought he was a decent hard working little player when he was at Liverpool - still only 28 and maybe worth a gamble but not at the expense of Downes or Nydam's places in the team.

From what I've seen Spearing just seems like another Hyam - and we already have 1 of him!

'if I knew what I was on about'.

At least you are consistent, runningout.
