Knudsen Back But Downes and Rowe Miss Leeds Trip
Thursday, 21st Sep 2017 15:23

Defender Jonas Knudsen is fit for Saturday’s trip to Leeds United but midfielders Flynn Downes and Danny Rowe have both been ruled out of the game against the Championship leaders.

The Danish international missed last Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Bolton due to a hamstring injury but manager Mick McCarthy says he’s now recovered.

“He’s fine, he was training on Tuesday with Lids [fitness coach Andy Liddell], doing his rehab, his fitness work,” he said.

“As usual we get one injured and we’re a man down and he joined in and he’s been fine. He’s in good shape.

“Flynn won’t be involved this weekend, he tweaked his thigh. One in, one out, we’ll get the revolving door going.”

Rowe will also be absent having suffered his knock in the U23s’ 5-2 win at Nottingham Forest on Tuesday.

“Danny got clattered on Tuesday and he’s injured as well,” McCarthy added. “He’s not available for Saturday, he took a really hefty knock, it was a bad tackle apparently.”

Speaking last week, the Town boss said Tommy Smith, who has been out with a hamstring injury, and Luke Hyam, who had suffered a setback as he looked to return from his knee problem, might return to training on Monday.

However, he says Smith, who was doing Pilates along with Adam Webster and a number of other players at Playford Road earlier this afternoon, is yet to return to training, while Hyam is still feeling his injury, which he picked up at the start of pre-season training.

“Tommy Smith, no. Luke Hyam joined in this morning and very sadly had to walk back in, he felt a twinge in his knee again,” McCarthy said.

Better news was Webster playing 63 minutes for the U23s on Tuesday, his first game as he makes his recovery from his latest ankle injury.

“He has been unlucky and I think everybody saw what potential he has when he came and he played his games,” McCarthy reflected.

“But he’s just damaged his ankle ligaments a couple of times, they’ve been long-term injuries.

“It’s nice to see his happy, smiling face again. He’s back and he’s enjoying it. He had 60 minutes at Nottingham Forest, for the U23s on Tuesday and he’ll have part of the game against Coventry next week. He’s not ready for first-team action yet.

“He won’t travel this weekend. He might tell you different, but one 60 minutes after three months out, that’s not conducive to first-team football, unless you’re Luke Chambers, of course. That’s a completely different issue.”

McCarthy hopes midfield duo Emyr Huws, who has had an achilles problem, and Teddy Bishop, who underwent groin surgery last month, will be back in mid-October.

“I would hope Emyr certainly after the next international break and I think Bish as well,” he added.

“What was lovely about Bish was that I said to him the other day, ‘How are you doing?’ and he said, ‘Great’.

“I said, ‘We’ll leave it at that, conversation’s over’. I was delighted to hear that because he’s just had so many little niggles and tweaks. It was just great to hear him say he felt well. And that was the same today, so I’m really pleased.”

The Town boss hopes Bishop, now 21, will be spurred by the progress made by the likes of Downes, 18, and Tristan Nydam, 17, in his absence.

“He was the young kid breaking through when we played Middlesbrough three years ago and they were all waxing lyrical about him,” he said.

“He was brilliant when he came in and certainly made a big impression on everybody, he made a big impression not only here but in the league. But very sadly for him and for us he’s been injured for such a long time since.

“So, I would imagine if he gets that lucky break and he’s fit, he’ll be raring to go and we’ll have a good player on our hands.”

Fellow midfielder Andre Dozzell has been ruled out for the season with the torn cruciate knee ligament he sustained on the opening day.

Quickest recovery from a hamstring injury i've ever heard about. Guinness book of records?

I am beginning to wonder what it is Town do in training that keeps getting players injured and why we can't get them fit again. I appreciate some of the injuries like Tommy Smith's back was an underlying issue nobody could forsee the hamstrings and thigh strains seem avoidable.
Before anyone says you're not there you don't know I fully accept that but we do seem more susceptible than other clubs.

Think the problem could lay hear in this comment from last year. "We have a lot of players who are 25 or older. They know their bodies. If I tell them to do something and they don't want to do it, then why push the point? Once they get over 25, they've played football for a long time -- they don't need fitness coaches telling them what to do, so I let them get on with it." - Andy Liddell, fitness coach

Lots of good news in there.

Knudsen will probably go straight back in in place of Kenlock, which would be harsh on Myles who played really well against Bolton I thought.

Looks like a defensive line up again from the dino again isnt it lucky for mm to get two midfield players injured so he can pick 6 defensive players

Well that's Kenlock out despite playing well.
He talks some amount of rubbish about Chambers.

When I read these negative comments I wonder do these people go to football (armchairers) or are scum supporters.

Makes me wonder if it's worth Luke Hyam even getting out on to the training ground, he might as well stay put in the physio's full time.

I love TWTD and how they keep us up to date with the latest news but some people's comments on here are ridiculous sometimes. Baxter 7 for example. You say that MM will play ANOTHER defensive line up again as if he does it all the time. Tell me what other games this season we have started with a defensive team. We started 3 or 4 games with all 4 forwards so I think it's best you think more before you comment.

Those of you that don't get it, here's a couple of quotes from the manager following Saturdays game...

I thought Myles Kenlock was different class today from the word go.

I can't make people come in, I can only try to affect results.

Now, you tell me, who is more likely to be in the starting lineup against Leeds?

Kenlock or Knudsen?

Royal Ascot Blue I would say Knudsen as Mick normally brings people straight back in. My team is Bart, Iorfa, Chambers, Spence, Knudsen, Waghorn, Skuse, Ward, Celina, Garner, Mcgoldrick. However, I don't think Tom Ayedemi deserves to come out, but Mick prefers other people. It would be useful to throw another man back as we are playing te leaders, not rock bottom team. Infact, I would be pleased with 5-3-2 and a draw.

Hmmm..never heard of so many players getting injured, ridiculous at this stage of the season..maybe it's time the club looked at changing it's "fitness" coach?
