Chambers: Winning Games is the Most Important Thing Wednesday, 20th Sep 2017 12:36
Skipper Luke Chambers admits that the Blues may not currently be the easiest on the eye but says winning games is ultimately the most important thing.
Despite moving up to fifth in the Championship, two points behind leaders Leeds - who they face at Elland Road on Saturday - with a game in hand having won five of their first seven in the league, some supporters were critical of Town’s display as the beat bottom-of-the-table Bolton Wanderers 2-0 at Portman Road on Saturday.
Chambers, who made his return from an ankle injury against the Trotters, says it’s promising that the Blues are winning matches such as Saturday’s even when they’re not at their best.
“I think it can only be encouraging,” he told iFollow Ipswich. “People can say whatever they want to say, we’re winning games, we’re scoring goals, we kept a clean sheet at the weekend.
“I think whoever you play against, whatever the game in the division, it’s very, very tough, regardless of teams’ positions at the bottom of the league.
“People would have looked at our fixture at the weekend, we were at home against Bolton, they haven’t had a great start and [think] we should be brushing them aside.
“But as it showed, it’s never going to be an exhibition of football, I don’t think we’ve ever been that team and it’ll take a long time to get to that level if we want to become a team that’s very, very easy on the eye.
“At the minute what we’re doing is working, we’re picking up points, we’re finding ourselves in a good position in the division and we’re looking forward to going up [to Leeds] and having a test and hopefully putting in a better performance that might [not] be pleasing on the eye, but at the end of the day if we’re winning games, for me that’s the most important thing.”
Chambers, who played every minute of last season’s Championship campaign, is pleased to be back having missed three league games due to the ankle injury he suffered in the 4-3 win at Millwall, a problem which at one stage looked like it might keep him out until the middle of next month.
“Originally they said nine weeks, there was a bit of a fracture on the scan, of one my bones in my ankle and I’d damaged both ligaments,” he added.
“But I always tried to be positive and come back as quickly as I could. There’s still a little bit of pain there. I’m strapping it up and I did everything for five days leading up to the game and I felt probably better than I did at times last year.
“I know it’s probably not as strong as it could be, there is still a risk of me playing on it but I think that is minimal and I know what I can get through and hopefully it doesn’t detract from my individual performances. And if we’re still stronger as a team with me playing, I’m going to play no matter what.”
Meanwhile, midfielder Andre Dozzell, who is out for the season having undergone surgery for a torn cruciate knee ligament five weeks ago, has been doing hydrotherapy exercises as he takes the early steps on the road back to fitness.
The 18-year-old is expected to be out for around nine months with the injury he suffered just before half-time during the 1-0 opening day win against Birmingham City.

Dont disagree with you hampstead but worry when Mick says he has got midfield covered, we are crying out for a magic clone or just someone who can retain the ball.
The players are behind Mick, thank goodness. Team unity is something we lacked under Keane and Jewell. Calling that "being a company man" is symptomatic of the instinct to say something negative with our fans at the moment.
Winning games is the most important, and I am delighted with how the season has gone thus far. The problem will come if the wins stop though, as the playing style then means support drops off and that hits the club's income. Last season did damage to the support base and I hope this season's results will bring people back.
As long as we win who cares yes it's not pretty football but we are not Barcalona get behind the team or f*## off we are 5th in the league not 5th from bottom support the team
Jeez louise, we are now going to compare the current side to 1981 are we? When it was a level playing field and a small club like ours could compete at the top level. Bringing up Wark, Mariner etc is a nonsense when relegated clubs come down with three years' worth of parachute payments behind them.
No it's called showing a degree of pride in how you play. That wasn't the point, which you stated.
How else in someways will ‘bums on seats' return to PR. In many ways you pays yet money to see attractive, attacking football, as we had with Burley, Royle and perhaps Lyall.
Hat off the Chambers he's loyal as the day is long. But as he's captain when he's got some spare time in between training and getting tattoos, he should have a walk round the club look at its history, talk to some of the ex players, then go to the academy and see how Brian Klug reaches the kids then he might see the link from our past to our future!! Be nice if the now chould try to be the same.
Vungblie I think Kevin Bru is still at the club, though unlikely to get picked. He was meant to have been really ripping it up in training recently so we may see him again.
Agree with chambers that winning ugly will get you by to a point. So what happens when the wheels fall off and we are losing ugly, think I know the answer to that one as we have been there already.
Although I respect Chambo as a captain, players generally talk some crap, the same ones who kiss the badge which means absolutly nothing. Lets see where we are at christmas there are some tough games to come. Interested comment form pjewellisgod maybe Bru is kicking all these players in training hoping to get a game!!!
Well said Chambers keep on hoofing the ball as far as you can and acting as McCarthy's minder and your position as captain and in the team will be safe.
In my opinion it is horses for courses. Sure we would all love to play every team in the league off the park but that just is not going to happen this season. However against Bolton (and other lesser teams) who can only dream of having players of McGoldrick and Celina ability we need to be more positive (from the off!). Thats where I think MM could and should improve. Town are too often sent out looking nervy in the first half with don't give them anything early on ringing in their ears.
Blue75, What on earth has getting tattoo's got anything to do with the history of the club. What he does in his own time has nothing whatsoever to do with the pride Or the history of our club.
To me its very simple,i need to come away from PR and think yes I enjoyed that ,win, lose or draw I need value for money.Since relinquishing my Season ticket I have been asked to go with someone elses ticket many time but always say no so if it were free it would still not entice me back.Improve the entertainment and fans will return like the dozens I work with who all agree with me.
Says Luke with Mick's hand up his backside - you won't get in the top 6 over the course of the season if the performances aren't there, you can't rely on scoring from relatively few chances in most games like we have done this season.
Well I was at Millwall and Palace & Fulham home ; first two were brilliant matches, Fulham was a huge dissapointment i have to say. Mainly because some of our players passing was just p--s poor at times while Fulhams was largely accurate and creative.
