U23s Top League After Hitting Five Against Forest
Tuesday, 19th Sep 2017 21:17

Town’s U23s continued their excellent start to the season and climbed to the top of the Professional Development League Two South by beating Nottingham Forest 5-2 at Alfreton Town’s Impact Stadium.

Forest went ahead in the seventh minute via Aaron Smith but Gerard Nash’s side hit back on 20 when Shane McLoughlin converted a penalty after defender Chris Smith had been fouled.

Lewis Walters restored the home side’s lead in the 25th minute, then on 37 Town winger Danny Rowe limped off having been on the wrong end of a heavy tackle.

The Blues levelled via a penalty for the second time on the night 10 minutes into the second half, Ben Morris (pictured) netting his first U23s goal of the campaign from the spot.

The England U18 international headed Gerard Nash’s side into the lead for the first time with his second of the game and season in the 71st minute from sub Conor McKendry’s cross.

Australian striker Ben Folami made it 4-2 with his fifth U23s goal of the season with five minutes left on the clock, again from a McKendry cross, then midfielder James Blanchfield curled home Town’s fifth from Morris’s pass in the 88th minute.

Central defender Adam Webster played the first 63 minutes as he made his return to match action after his ankle injury.

Town’s U23s have now won five of their first six fixtures, including the last four, and lead Coventry City by two points at the top of the table.

U23s: M Crowe, Woolfenden, C Smith, Webster (D Crowe 63), Webber, McLoughlin, Blanchfield, Nydam (Ndaba 63), Rowe (McKendry 37), Morris, Folami. Subs: Wright, Daniels.

Shame about Rowe, never seems to get a first team look in regardless, 63 minutes will do Webster good.

Really are coming on in leaps and bounds so far this season. Folami now on 5 and 2 for morris. Should keep the pressure on mick to put them on first team bench.

Went and watched this. Excellent display all round - including once the substitutions were made. Conor McKendry was superb. Future's so bright I'm gonna wear shades :-)

What a fabulous result. The Ipswich Academy and this U23 team is now starting to bear fruit, playing entertaining football, whilst producing a batch of players that could help to keep the club in good health in the future.

Great to see, well done lads, obviously lots of fight and goals in this side, I think the first team may emulate them at the weekend and maybe go top too.
What fun this season is.....so far !!

I would just love to see Ben Folami play. He sounds so good, probably no Rowe on the bench against Leeds.

Happy to see these boys keep pressure on first team players but also to see Gerard Nash keep pressure on Mick!

Agree with several people within this chat. The Aussie kid looks a blinding player. Not that I get to many games, but surely be worth a run of games. From a personal perspective a lot has been said about nydem (however you spell it) young Andre and Ben Morris, and rightly so they deserve their chance, it seems as though this kid has emerged from a bit of nowhere.
Oh and I'm sure his got some English in him somewhere. Be great to see some of these kids pull on an English shirt one day at Wembley. Seems as though the potential is there. Onwards and upwards.

Fantastic game, playing exciting football from defence to attack. Not going to single out individuals, but I would confidently say that every player in the 23s could comfortably play in the 1st team. Keep it up lads.

As I enjoy good, passing, football, the football that I watched at Portman Road during the Bobby Robson era, is it time for me to forego dull Championship football, and just attend the U18 and U23 matches?

Nash for Manager.........well, no point in moving this ball playing side into a MM set up, they'll not know how to hoof.

Credit to the young side great to see these young players coming through and great MM is using some. I disagree with some posters claiming the first team are still playing boring football. This season we have been playing the ball out from the back and not just hoofing it. The only long balls I've seen are balls into channels. The reason why we're not seeing much of the ball is because we've not got the footballers like other sides have. And our tactic is to go from back to front quickly to get in behind the defence.
