Downes Wins First Cap But England U19s Defeated

Midfielder Flynn Downes won his first England U19s cap as the Young Lions were beaten 3-1 by Germany in a friendly at Mansfield’s One Call Stadium this evening.

Downes, 18, started and played the first 60 minutes before being replaced, his first England cap at any level.

Fellow Town midfielder Tristan Nydam, 17, was left out of the matchday squad having won his first U19s cap in Friday’s 7-1 defeat of Poland.

Elsewhere, Blues youngster Conor McKendry, 18, was left out of the matchday 18 as Northern Ireland’s U21s were beaten 1-0 in Slovakia in a European Championships qualifier.

England U19s: Schofield, Sterling, Tymon, McGuane (Willock 69), Francis (Tanganga 60), Brown, Leko (Nkeitah 69), Downes (Uwakwe 60), Brereton (Hirst 60), Mount (c), Nelson (Embleton 90). Unused: Hirst, Turner, Kemp, James, Bennetts.

Well played Flynn. I think he is a player who has got a futre here and will go on to become an incredible footballer.
