Goldson Loan Deal Runs Out of Time
Thursday, 31st Aug 2017 23:03

Town have been unable to complete the loan signing of Brighton centre-half Connor Goldson before the closure of the summer transfer window, a move which appeared almost certain to go ahead this morning until the Seagulls’ deal to sign Club Brugge defender Stefano Denswil collapsed.

Brighton have been unable to recruit another centre-half before the 11pm deadline, which would have seen the Seagulls allow Goldson to join Town for the season.

TWTD understands Goldson, who was also interesting Sheffield United and a number of other Championship sides, travelled to Suffolk last night and, as reported earlier, underwent a medical at Playford Road this morning with the clubs having agreed terms on a deal which would have seen the Blues pay a very significant proportion of the former Shrewsbury defender’s wage.

The framework of the proposed deal was agreed a fortnight ago when TWTD first reported that Town had made an approach for the one-time Cheltenham loanee, however, with Albion unwilling to confirm until they had signed another central defender.

A previous Brighton move for a defender broke down prior to Club Brugge calling off Denswil’s switch with that deal all but done - the Dutchman had undergone a medical and terms had been agreed - after the Belgian side discovered another of their players, Frenchman Benoît Poulain, would be unavailable for longer than had previously been anticipated due to an injury.

With the Goldson loan deal thrown into doubt, the Blues looked at other central defensive options including Derby’s Jason Shackell, although Town had concerns regarding the former Canary’s fitness. The 33-year-old has played only one game this season following back surgery towards the end of 2016/17.

The Blues had also shown interest in Nottingham Forest’s Jack Hobbs, as was reported over the weekend, but the East Midlanders were unwilling to allow the 29-year-old to move on loan.

With the Goldson deal looking less likely to be completed and having been unable to progress moves for other central defensive options, the Blues made a late afternoon approach for Callum Connolly, a player we understand Town have been eyeing for 18 months and who was a target last summer.

Although primarily a right-back rather than a centre-half, Connolly, who has been signed on a season-long loan, is viewed as giving Town additional defensive strength in depth with Jordan Spence and Dominic Iorfa - both also chiefly right-backs - among the options to play at centre-half during the current central defensive injury crisis which sees skipper Luke Chambers, Tommy Smith and Adam Webster all sidelined.

While Town will not be able to sign a player currently with a club after this evening’s 11pm deadline, they could still recruit someone who is out of contract if manager Mick McCarthy believes he requires further defensive cover until one or more of his senior centre-halves have made their return with Chambers likely to be the first to get back to action.

After the Blues skipper suffered his ankle injury at Millwall, the expectation was that he might be back a couple of weeks after the international break.

Meanwhile, serial Town loanee Jonny Williams joined Sunderland from Crystal Palace on a season-long lan just before the 11pm deadline.

If there was one season , just one season , and one deadline where we had to get things done it was this one , and we failed. Mark my words, come two months time this will haunt us in ways we haven't even seen yet , is say I'm surprised, but we al know better !

Flicked up again I fear. You could put your house on this outcome. The diving if the young Everton player was another example of panic, left it too late again, window dealings.

After ifora got the ed inside out by Fulham this is a good deal. Will allow ifora to move to a back 2 or 3 and extra options now on the right. Think ifora better off at CB.

This is very disappointing, and puts at risk our great start to the season. Going to places like Loftus Road and Ellend Road with no centre backs is a highly risky, and feels unprofessional to me. Signing a 19-year-old right-back, although probably very good and versatile, is odd when we already have two right-backs in Iorfa and Spence. McCarthy himself said no one in the Championship players teenagers at centre back and he likes experienced pros, yet we let Berra and Taylor go without replacing them. It was always doubtful that Smith and Webster would just come back from months out to be injury free and we shouldn't have let it to the last minute in my opinion.

Nooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What no Plan B ???
We have needed a CB since we gave Berra away so why we have run out of time I do not know.
Just when things were looking up we revert back to the norm.
Oh well roll on Saturday week away at QPR

So the club had the player they wanted lined up and were waiting for Brighton to get their arses into gear - they were then let down by another club and in turn let us down - but obviously that is Mick fault ?

Knew Berra was leaving end of last season and failed to get a replacement , panic signing of a kid with less experience than Emmanuel in the championship . Spence and Knudsen are a poor pairing for the championship who got lucky at Brentford

According to SKY it might not be a dead deal Brighton have till one O'clock to finish the deal for a defender as long as they have registered the deal by 11 and they have two deals registered so outside chance but still a chance

This is unacceptable. Who is to blame? Best start to a season for decades... This was the time to enhance the squad and push on. Really disappointed and I fear this will have a very adverse effect on our 'good start' by the end of September.

If Town agreed a deal a fortnight ok and the player was as of this morning going to be our loan player, it was Brighton not Town who cocked up. I accept that other irons should have been in the fire but there aren't many CBS around that we could afford on loan or otherwise. Did anyone make. Afuss when Taylor was released?

Well that's it folks until the beginning of next year.

A disappointing end to what appears to have been,up until now, quite a goodwindow.

I have liked the look of Woolfenden, who although he was played out of position against Palace;feel he would make a very good Centre Half despite his tender years(to Mick anyway)as he said when questioned that you never see an 18 year old as a regular centre back. This was when he said he was looking for a 'hairy arsed' centre half to cover for the three regulars who are out.

We shall see in the coming months just how much McCarthy has actually changed. He played his favoured 4-4-2 against Fulham when 3-5-2 was needed to combat their strong midfield;already identified by our Manager.

We shall also see if the youngsters like Luke Tristan and Flynn get a look in when/if the injury crisis is over, and will he also continue to play his favourite Skuse even though not 100% as he did against Fulham.

Also whether the new boys continue to make an impact, including the panic buy from Everton, who could turn out to be the best of the lot,who knows?

This will all be clear by the time the next window opens at the beginning of next year.

Bert - we are apparently paying £1m for Celina's loan. In the great scheme of things, paying a large proportion of high wages or another high loan fee has to be worth it to bring in quality if we seriously have any aspirations of being better than below average again??

Spare a thought for Goldson. Passed the medical, and looked ready to play first team football week in and week out for us. Now he's just going to be a general squad player at a club who won't play him. Feel sorry for him to be honest, especially given what he's already been through. I'm sure he's angry about the situation, I would be.

Seasider added 23:57 - Aug 31
On the subject of Celina, who I know has been ill;will he be given a run in the first team.Or has Mick already decided that being 'Jonny Foreigner'he wont be able to gel with the real British blokes as happened with Tommy Oar,Jonny Parr,Guirane N'Daw,Frederick Veseli,Balint Bajner,Piotr Malarczyk and Kevin Bru?

I hope that he will be allowed by Mick to play in the first team on a regular basis, as if we have paid out 1m as Lathers says, then it is a waste of Marcus'money not to,especially as he looks good on the few occasions he has played so far.

Can't believe how inept we have been to reinforce our obvious lack of CBS.. although a lot of us knew this would be the case, just hoped to be wrong

The same people spouting rubbish as always. We agreed this deal 2 weeks ago. Not itfcs fault that Brighton failed to sign the player requires to allow this loan to go ahead. In the meantime we were looking elsewhere. Hobbs forc1. But as the story states but most probably haven't read properly, forest wouldn't allow him to go on loan. Shackell also but if we had doubts about his fitness, it was prob right not to follow that 1 up. And we've now signed some1, who may not be exactly what we looking for but will give us cover. And according to u guys, we're the only club who were trying to sign players today, and ultimately fail. Clearly not.
