Derby Defender Shackell Linked But Goldson Still Prime Target
Thursday, 31st Aug 2017 14:35

Derby County’s Jason Shackell is reported to be on Town’s radar as they look to secure central defensive cover ahead of tonight’s 11pm deadline.

According to Sun on Sunday reporter Alan Nixon, the Blues are keen on taking the 33-year-old, who previously played for Mick McCarthy at Wolves, on loan although his wages may prove to be a stumbling block.

Town’s number one target remains Brighton’s Connor Goldson but, as reported earlier, that move is in jeopardy as the Seagulls’ attempt to take Club Brugge defender Stefano Denswil on loan has collapsed.

Albion are trying to land another defender as cover which would allow Goldson to complete his season-long loan switch to the Blues, while Town are looking at alternative options with the reported interest in Shackell little surprise given his history with McCarthy.

Stevenage-born Shackell came through the youth ranks and made his first senior appearances at Norwich City before joining McCarthy's Wolves on summer deadline day in 2008.

However, he was unable to establish himself at Molineux, making only four starts and nine sub appearances, before returning to Carrow Road on loan in February 2009.

A further loan at Doncaster followed before the 6ft 4in tall defender moved on to Barnsley and then Derby. After a spell at Burnley between 2012 and 2015 he returned to the Rams, signing a three-year deal.

Shackell has made only one Carabao Cup appearance this season having missed the last few months of last season with a back injury.

Despite his limited appearances at Wolves, McCarthy has previously had praise for his former player when he has faced the Blues.

I see Sunderland failed with a bid of £1m for Tommy Elphick. Maybe a bid £1,5m might get him signed permanently and enough of this looking for a loan player nonsense.

We should have 4 recognised senior centre halves full time at the club anyway, particularly now we are playing with 3 at the back more of the time. Should be 2 signed up players for every position :
2 at RB - Spence & Iorfa
2 at LB - Knudsen & Knelock
4 at CB - Chambers, Smith, Webster & .....

Ok, so Iorfa is on loan & I spelt Kenlock wrong, but other than that I stand by what I say above !

Doesn't matter how many baskets blue and true its how many players they get through the door . As Les has said at present we only have three senior centre backs and two of those are injury prone

Connor Goldson still at PR, waiting to get the all clear from Chris Houghton bride he can sign on the dotted line. Whilst Mick it waiting he is looking at other targets/CB's he can sign before 11.

The club is working hard to get something done 😀

all this silly panicking of getting someone in when we had all summer to do it is really grim.Berra left and lets face it webster is a crock however decent he may look at times so we will be lucky to get 15 games out of him for the season, smith only played 10 last year too, hope goldson is on pay as you play as he seems another crock in the making...sigh !

You can sooooooo see this going pear shaped...(it's a repeat of the Daryl Murphy situation, the need of a striker and we didn't get one, the need of a CD and...well)

I trust Knudsen n Spence as centrebacks.

I would've been looking at wide midfielders/wingers instead as Mick would rather play our strikers out wide than stick those ones we have in the team.

Did we expect it to be a enlightening transfer window..

Why is it that all the CB's we have been linked to have an awful injury history, or recovering from "HEART SURGERY". Surely there is a CB out there who is fit enough an capable to cover our defence until the players have recover, not someone with an injury list that would make Darren Anderton blush.

Three and a half hours left. I'm a glass is half full kinds guy, but why do these deals have to go down to the last minute. It feels we just get the dregs of what is left instead of players we actually want.
