Goldson at Town to Complete Loan Move
Thursday, 31st Aug 2017 10:35

TWTD understands Brighton centre-half Connor Goldson has arrived at Town to undergo a medical and to complete the formalities on his loan move to the Blues.

As reported earlier, Brighton are set to sign Club Brugge defender Stefano Denswil on loan with manager Chris Hughton having been keen to add to his defensive ranks before he was willing to allow Goldson to join the Blues.

Confirmation of Denswil's move will lead to the rubberstamping of the Goldson switch, which seems likely to be a season-long deal with the usual option of being cut short in January.

Aside from the addition of the 24-year-old centre-half it’s expected to be a quiet final day of the transfer window at Portman Road.

The signing of another centre-half has been Blues boss Mick McCarthy’s priority for the last couple of weeks with skipper Luke Chambers, Tommy Smith and Adam Webster all sidelined with injury.

TWTD first reported that Town had made an approach for Goldson a fortnight ago with the 6ft 3in defender only having featured for the Seagulls in the Carabao Cup this season.

Goldson, who has also been interesting Sheffield United, returned to action in pre-season having undergone heart surgery in March after a swollen aorta was discovered during routine screening in January.

The centre-half or right-back started his career with Shrewsbury, during which time he spent a spell on loan at Cheltenham, before joining Brighton, to whom he is contracted for three more years, in August 2015 for a fee of £600,000.

Since his move to the Amex he has made 32 starts and three sub appearances, scoring twice, most of those games coming in the 2015/16 campaign as the Seagulls made the Championship play-offs after finishing third. Coincidentally, his first Championship start came in Town's 1-0 win at the Amex in December 2015.

Last season he made only four Championship starts and one sub appearance due to a knee injury suffered in pre-season and then the discovery of the heart problem which cut short his campaign.

Town are not thought to be looking to add to any other area of their squad before the window closes at 11pm this evening.

Youngsters Adam McDonnell and George Fowler were allowed to join Aldershot on a month’s loan yesterday but further departures seem unlikely, aside from out-of-favour midfielder Kevin Bru.

The Mauritius international was told in May he could leave if he found himself a new club and recently said he was considering offers from sides in France and elsewhere.

If the 28-year-old isn’t close to completing a move the Blues could settle the remaining year of his contract, allowing the former Levski Sofia man to find another club outside the transfer window.

Is this likely to be a season long loan or until January? Is there an option to buy at the end of it?

Good move. Much needed cover right now. Decision now has to be made whether we go with a back 5 or if Knudsen or Spence partners him in a back 4. My thoughts are either a back 4 (Iorfa, Spence, Goldson, Knudsen), or the back 5 (Iorfa, Spence, Goldson, Knudsen, Kenlock). Tough one to call, as feel Knudsen has been more effective in the centre...but wonder about Kenlock's readiness as a regular LB.

"Undergo a medical" ...does this mean that we wont sign him if he's injured/unfit? We usually seem to sign them anyway.

Good signing, well done MM and ME. It would be useful to have him on a season long loan as Webster and Smith seem to be really struggling with injuries. I presume Mick will play Goldson at RCB and Knudsen at LCB until Chambers returns.

It's expected to be a quiet transfer deadline day. When have we ever had a busy one. Good signing, COYB

Could it be, we've actually not sold a player out this summer? Makes a change Marcus.

Good if complete. Have been found wanting in midfield of late. If we manage to bring in a solid midfielder we'll be laughing

4 games in a year and injuries/medical issues. Our scouts are something else.

Re loan length, I assume a season-long deal - as per the player Brighton are trying to sign as cover - which can be cut short in January depending on where the clubs see things at that point.

Hope we get him for the year. By January, however, maybe our own boys will be back to fitness, so cover won't be as crucial.

We'd be very unlucky if at least 2 of our 3 currently injured centre halves are still out come January, so having the "the usual option of being cut short in January" shouldn't be a problem for us. I just hope he's fit and ready to be in the starting XI when we're back to league football after the international break.
Hopefully Mick has someone else, either another centre half or a creative midfielder, that he has kept below the radar, also ready to sign before the deadline is up.

Living just outside Brighton I have seen him play many times and he is a very good addition, he is highly rated by every Brighton fan I know, he was looking better and better when they reached the play offs 2015/16 and would be great if it could be made permanent.
