Town Confident of Completing Goldson Loan Signing Before Window Closes
Wednesday, 30th Aug 2017 17:36

TWTD understands Town are confident of completing the loan signing of Brighton centre-half Connor Goldson tomorrow, ahead of the 11pm deadline.

A fortnight ago, TWTD revealed the Blues had made an approach for the 24-year-old, while reports that Town are close to agreeing a deal to land the Wolverhampton-born centre-half emerged earlier this afternoon via a number of sources.

It’s believed Brighton may want to add to their squad before allowing Goldson to move on, but the switch is expected to go through on Thursday.

Goldson, who has also been interesting Sheffield United, returned to action in pre-season having undergone heart surgery in March but has made only one Carabao Cup appearance for the Seagulls this season.

The 6ft 3in defender started his career with Shrewsbury, during which time he spent a spell on loan at Cheltenham, before joining Brighton, to whom he is contracted for three more years, in August 2015 for a fee of £600,000.

Since moving to the Amex he has made 32 starts and three sub appearances, scoring twice, most of those games coming in the 2015/16 campaign as the Seagulls made the Championship play-offs.

Last season he made only four Championship starts and one sub appearance due to a knee injury and then the discovery of the heart problem which curtailed his campaign.

Town boss Mick McCarthy, a close friend of Brighton manager Chris Hughton, has been looking to add another centre-half to his squad with skipper Luke Chambers (ankle), Tommy Smith (hamstring) and Adam Webster (ankle) all currently sidelined.

Sounds decent, someone who already has experience at this level and can maybe offer competition for the others when they return from injury.

Was very good at Shrewsbury, won player of the year award 2014-15 season, subsequently earnt himself a move to Brighton before heart condition was thankfully picked up and heart operation was succesful.
Hope he earns a full contract at Town as he is still young at 24.

Will be happy with this signing as I've heard very good comments about this kid from the Brighton fans & at 24 he is a good age. I wonder if Mick will add another CB as he never replaced Berra, it was mentioned yesterday that Jack Hobbs wages could of been a stumbling block for a loan move.
A cheeky wee bid of £1m for Hearts winger Jamie Walker would be nice! 😃 COYB

Would be a good signing

Anyone know if he's right or left sided?

@BlueGoonie he's right footed & can also play at right back

So whilst I welcome Connor to the Club, I can't help but be concerned that we are signing yet another potential sick note! We never seem to learn do we.

Would this be a season loan or just to January?

ArnieM - He had a preventive heart op following a scan, so I am not sure that makes him a 'sick note'. There is little risk for us if it is only a loan deal.

Pity he isn't a left sided centre half as we seem to have plenty of right sided centre backs but can't have it all. Will be good cover until the other right sided centre halfs return

He had a swollen Aorta. That's hardly sick note is it? No evidence he is what you'd call injury prone. Needs games, wants to show Houghton he is PL ready, good for all parties if it gets done

ArnieM? Was that a bad joke or something. It's not like he is prone to calf strains it's a heart issue. A bit more serious no? I'm very happy for this as we need cover for sure. If we signed another play too i would be more than pleased.

Foot in mouth Arnie M!! "Ignorant" & "Cretin" spring to mind!! Words your very familiar with if my good old memory serves me well, not to mention the old "lack of class" line!!. Comes around goes around fella, trust me, it always does!! Adios X

If I am reading ArnieM's comment correctly, he was simply trying to point out his poor sick record. It is a concern. We have signed a number of loan players over the years (e.g. poor Jonny Williams) who have spent more time on the treatment table than the football field. We need to be absolutely certain that his condition has been cured and he is back to full fitness. I fear that desperation for a centre-back will lead us into making an unfortunate and expensive punt.

now now boys, play nicely!
since Fabrice Muamba the FA make it such a big thing to check on players of all ages for heart defects, even the real youngsters, before this there was players probably playing with heart defects unnoticed, ArnieM is just concerned we might find a replacement that might not feature then be a waste of time.Hopefully not and we can shore that defence up and kick the narwich scums ass this year!

Blimey there's some touchy people on here!!

I wasn't wishing the poor guy any harm but merely staying that his health problems may mean he is AT RISK of being out through illness. Can't see what was wrong with that tbh!

Why don't Brighton want to keep him then??

Warktheline . Could you please give me some examples of when , how , who I have " continually throw around insults" too. I am genuinely shocked that this has been levied st me , considering the awful persistent posts on here by so many who slam down others views and opinions. This forum at times is shocking . I would appreciate your examples of my so called abuse because I genuinely did not perceive my posts as zbusive to others . I've certainly not had any pm's from admin?!

Would expect him to come in for Iorfa with Spence moving back to right back, or make up a 5 at the back so in that respect it should woek well in the short term.

Would prefer a permanent signing. However, this fella is a good defender.

I am happy that we are looking at a CB, but as many have posted I would prefer to see us sign a permanent player as we still have not replaced Berra (LCB). I thought the reason we signed Iorfa (and loaned out Emmanuel) was that he can play RCB too as well as RB. LCB would be my priority as Knudsen is not a CB of any description (just my opinion) and we only have Smith as as an option.
I was hopeful that this would have been sorted way before now, but here we are going into Deadline day still 'hoping' !!!.

Good loan signing. I understand the reasoning behind your comment ArnieM but you have turned into Victor Meldrew.

I'm not even close to being confident until he's holding up that shirt, we never have much luck on deadline day....

Get it done... QUICKLY!
