McCarthy No Closer on New Striker But Confident of Signing Before Opening Day
Tuesday, 25th Jul 2017 11:03

Town boss Mick McCarthy say he is no nearer to adding a fourth striker to his squad, but believes another frontman will have been signed by the time the Blues take on Birmingham City in the opening game of the season a week on Saturday.

Asked if he was any closer to landing another attacker McCarthy said he wasn’t - “No, not yet” - but was bullish on the prospects of adding one before the big kick-off on Saturday 5th August: “We’ll have another.”

The Blues boss, who is likely to be looking for at least one other addition, probably another wide midfielder, before the season gets under way, says Brett Pitman’s recent departure to Portsmouth suited both parties, the 29-year-old having been involved less and less as last season progressed. Why was that?

“I’m not sure, I’d other options, sometimes it just [doesn't work out] and I just wanted to change it around and freshen it up and if I get my other striker then that’s what I’ll have done," he added.

“Brett wants to play, he wants to be the first-choice striker and he wasn’t going to be that. Joe Garner has certainly been very impressive, Freddie's Freddie [Sears], he’s excellent, he causes problems to every defence.

“And Didzy [David McGoldrick], he looks fit and raring to go. So, I’m pleased with the three of them, if I get another one it’ll be great.”

I thought perhaps we would be waiting for the Prem sides to name their squads and we would get a loan player who wasn't wanted. I can't see that happening now as we can't afford someone to come and sit on the bench most games.

I guess we are looking for a lower league player who can score goals. We know there are players out there but their managers have to be prepared to release them. Hopefully we don't get another Keifer Moore!

Agree bluebell we don't need a benchwarmer like Moore or a premier league loan man!

Mr Evans needs to fund a decent fee for a decent big man !

A Hugill type player would be spot on !

We need to get real here and spend 3-4 Million

But I ain't holding my breath

Good. Fingers crossed. Hopefully a >6ft + hungry/proven striker from L1 or L2 then.... (shame that Marqius signed a new deal with Doncaster).

With the money or seemingly lack of money to spend perhaps John Akinde from Barnet is worth a look. Two years on his contract though from a League two club may even be too much money for us!

MM tight lipped as always, I would say that with the confidence he has of landing a forward pre season that one is already lined up. Let's hope so at any rate, if not, then I fear for the worst, as we started last season with a strong quartet, and we know how that panned out.

We still need a quality striker and that means paying at least a couple of million in todays market.

That will be down to Evans but another bargain basement signing like Moore isn't the answer!

Personally think we should be looking at a loan from a Premier League club, someone who can bang in some goals.

Someone like Oli McBurnie from Swansea, or James Wilson from Man United. Guaranteed double figures with either of those.

Judging by them comments clearly Mick is very close to one and being candid. Rarely says we'll have one by then.

Question being whom.

Currie 10 : Id say mick ISNT being candid. Otherwise he's be telling us he's close to signing that striker. Hes actually holding his cards very close to his chest. But it the report title is true ....that we are no closer to signing a striker, if say that's quite worrying.

Looks like Lawrence not making it at Leicester. Have said before every player has a suited club, and maybe this is his.. We again seem to be lacking plans b c and d when it comes to improving our squad

Legoman - I very much doubt it will be Samuel, having just joined and signed a 3 year deal at Blackburn, he's likely to stay there now, I would think...

We will wait and see. Obviously stuff going on behind the scenes and mick has publicly laid it on the line for evans.

Anyone fancy putting a fiver on Lawrence on loan for another season. ?

'We'll have another' - yeah probably from Kidderminster or Braintree as a last minute panic buy. The signing of Garner is bit of a gamble and suspect Mick has bought him in for his physicality rather than goal scoring prowess, Pitman has gone and he was a goal scorer but unfortunately didn't do enough in other areas of play (which we all know with Mick is a must).

I don't want loans personally but I'd take Lawrence no bother

Pitman didn't work out as he needs balls played to his feet not 4ft above his head. So another striker needs to be 6ft+ for when McCarthy reverts to play A.

People may not like it but I think we need a target man to help support the other strikers is crucial but only if he's 1st XI worthy. Still think we need a Cb, still a bit shy in that area

It will be a big lump of a striker which we do need as tactics won't be changing. Peter Crouch would be my preference, but I guess we will end up with someone like Clayton Donaldson or another seasoned Championship forward. Ferguson - agree...wouldn't be surprised to see Lawrence back again which would be brilliant.
