Town Announce Squad Numbers for 2017/18
Monday, 24th Jul 2017 11:06

Town have announced their squad numbers for the 2017/18 campaign.

New striker Joe Garner has opted for the number 14 shirt with the number nine vacated by Leon Best at the end of last season still unfilled. Another striker is understood to be top of Mick McCarthy’s wish-list.

Recently-signed loanee Dominic Iorfa will wear the number two shirt which was Steven Taylor’s during the second half of last season, while Bersant Celina has been given the 11 worn by Brett Pitman for the last couple of campaigns and Tom Adeyemi number 15.

That shirt was Adam Webster’s last season but the former Portsmouth central defender has switched to Christophe Berra’s old number six for the season ahead.

Emyr Huws is sticking with 44, while Danny Rowe is moving to 17, which leaves Kevin Bru, who has been told he can move on if he can find another club, currently without a squad number.

Youngsters Flynn Downes and Tristan Nydam, numbers 43 and 45 last term, will wear 21 and 22 during the season ahead.

Let's hope we're gonna sign someone to wear that number 9 shirt then.

Squad looks very small when it's listed out like that, need a few more signings

No number 9. Wonder if we will start the season without one?

Never worth reading too much into squad numbers in my opinion. I'm sure if Bart really wanted 1 he would have it. It's a smaller squad but certainly greater quality than last season. At least most of the business has been done early this time and one or two late arrivals to fill the obvious requirements will be a bonus.

Good, good. No pressure on Bru then.

I know I'm gonna get accused of being negative but why is Gerks No.1 and Bart No.33. To me its very suggestive that they don't expect Bart to stay for long.

Bart likes 33, wore it at Notts County, I think.

Maybe Bart prefers his 33?..same as Huws' 44.

Let's hope and pray that McCarthy doesn't go and fill the iconic number 9 with another Leon Best type or a loanee...would've preferred Garner being given it if so.

Bart likes playing as no: 33. That's how I read it. Also, I agree with nhabo. It's a better quality squad if smaller. This is positive, not a negative and allows room for 2 or 3 extra's (hopefully a no:9)

As ever, people looking for a story that's not there. Saying Bart should be No1 is such pish, Roy Keane played number 16 for Man Utd, didn't see him on the bench too often.

Bit harsh on Bru to not allocate a number. Could always re-allocate IF he moved on.

Filling the number 9 position (not with an 8' target man) would be good though.

The whole squad number and names on shirt thing is just a marketing strategy brought in by big clubs and adopted by lesser ones. Should be done away with in my view and only 1 to 16 used on a match day.

Still hoping we can pull a marquee signing out of the bag to fill that number 9 shirt. Hopefully we're not going to sign some big lump of a target man if we're trying to play a different style of play this season. Joe Garner's surprisingly good in the air so it's not really needed anyway.

That's quite a statement of intent for Downes and Nydam, be good to see the kids get game time (and not just for the Caribou cup)

Number 9 is clearly being saved for Kieffer, after he scores 40 goals in four months at Rotherham.

I would've liked Freddie Sears to have the 9. I think it would do a lot for his confidence. But whatever happens. I'd like MM to play him through the middle this term.

Amazing how much people read into squad numbers

Bart likes 33
Garner likes 14
Sears likes 20

Loan players are not listed, Josh, Moore, McDonnell etc and those players are also available to us. Patterson is also available assuming he is loaned out.

Letting Pitman go will prove to be a mistake.

Every ruddy football team HAS to have a no9! Put your hand in your pocket Evans and cheer the place up!

I agree Carsey it's stupid having numbers that have no relevance to where players are on the pitch. Rugby manages it!

How come no one picking number 13? Are we really that superstitious?

Only number to worry about is three from the bottom

It makes sense if Bart likes 33 and is happy wit it.
A question. Why do they actually need squad numbers these days? Years ago we had a programme with the team on the back and the numbers told us who the players were. Now they have their names on the back anyway. Also, years ago, the numbers told us the position they played in but that doesn't seem to apply any more either.
Maybe it's because we can't pronounce half the names these days so it's easier to just say the number.

Ferguson how does the no on Freddies back give him more confidence?

We do need depth. If we get injuries like last season in not sure we have the strength.

Really want to see that striker
