McCarthy Pleased With Peterborough Performance and Still Looking for New Signings
Tuesday, 18th Jul 2017 22:26 by Dave Gooderham

Mick McCarthy said he was pleased with the performance of his two Ipswich Town teams after his side beat Peterborough United over four quarters of football.

The 120-match saw Ipswich run out 3-1 winners with a brace from Joe Garner and one for David McGoldrick — after Town old boy Jack Marriott had opened the scoring for Posh.

All the goals came in the first half of 60 minutes, but McCarthy was left perplexed that his side didn’t win more comfortably after largely dominating quarters three and four.

And the Town boss admitted he was still looking for new signings after a match that saw Bersant Celina and Dominic Iorfa make their Ipswich bow.

Summing up the match, McCarthy said: “It was different, but I think it’s a good idea.

“Ordinarily I’d have played a team for 60 minutes and another team for 30 minutes, but then the team that’s on for 30 minutes always thinks they’re the subs.

“It was a good way of doing it. I enjoyed tonight. How it’s only ended up three after that second half is beyond me.

“Strikers want to score. Freddie [Sears] was brilliant second half without getting one, Didzy [David McGoldrick] got his and I’m sure Joe [Garner] will be delighted to get two more.”

When quizzed on the likelihood of new signings, after missing out on striker Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, McCarthy added: “I’m delighted what we have done so far, but we’re still looking for players.

“He’s [Bodvarsson] gone to Reading for three million quid or something. I thought we had him coming on loan, but he’s gone there.”

McCarthy praised the performance of a number of his youngsters at the ABAX Stadium — Flynn Downes and Tristan Nydam were mentioned by the manager on more than one occasion during his post-match assessment - while he was equally pleased with the contribution of Celina and Iorfa.

Of the new boys, he said: “That’s not a true reflection of what they are. Dominic has only just arrived and Bersant hasn’t been able to train much [due to illness], but I was happy enough with them tonight. They’ve got more in them.

“I took Dominic off. He said he was ok, but sometimes common sense prevails. It would have been worse if he stayed on and something happened to him.

“Flynn Downes and Tristan [Nydam] were excellent, Ben Morris grew into the game, I was pleased with Conor [McKendry] and it was nice to see Bish [Teddy Bishop] get through 60 minutes.

“I can’t say anyone left me thinking ‘they won’t be involved again’. Most of them really impressed me. We played really well.”

McCarthy revealed that Bartosz Bialkowski was missing due to a stomach bug while Emyr Huws has a sore calf.

Adam Webster’s bad ankle meant he was also absent but the defender should return to training later this week and be in contention for Saturday’s friendly at Gillingham.

The Ipswich manager also revealed he was hoping to have a squad of around 24 players next season with Adam McDonnell one young player who is set to go out on loan.

“We’ll have about 22 to 24 maybe,” said McCarthy. “That will probably include Dozza [Andre Dozzell], Tristan [Nydam] and Flynn Downes.

“I get sick of seeing our programme with 40 players because we haven’t got 40 players. Everybody who’s ever had a squad number seems to get listed for us.

“We’ll have 22 or so players this season and they’ll all be first team players, as well as the likes of Tristan and Dozza, who really is a first-team player and comes back after a really good summer with England, and Flynn.

“I don’t want a massive 30 to 35-man squad. We had a lot of injuries last year — Bish, Giles Coke, Didzy — so we had to get other players in.

“But I don’t like taking players away from home who have to sit in the stand. You really want everyone to feel involved.”

Agreed. New signings a must. Big shortfall on last season.

So maybe a change of heart on Bru given his comments?

I think the signings made this summer have been decent; the right type of players to be seemingly played in the right position & that were a priority areas for us. I'd also say the ones we appear to have just missed out on have been encouraging too - Danny Ward would have been ideal up front but chose to reunite with Warnock, Bodvarsson's pace, strength & directness would have resulted in goals & assists, but if Reading have paid £3m for him it's far more than his form would suggest his value currently should be (a loan with option to buy would have been a great deal for us), while McGinn from Hibernian looks a player with a real future. Of the 3, it's only McGinn that we can say the club could/should have done more to get over the line. Maybe there's another bid left there yet, which could be a good investment even if it's more than the club wants to pay now.
A decent centre forward is a must & if it means paying £2m+ for the right player who is worth it, then that's what needs to be done. Otherwise the good work in the bag so far will be for nothing. Also keep Bart.

* "Encouraging" insofar as to the type & calibre of player we were targeting.

ITFCson. The difference is we are playing the ball on the ground more so far. Whether this lasts only time will tell. Sad that Chambers looks so uncomfortable with the ball and will probably revert to hoofing it.

Encouraging that we are playing football on the ground, but having a big target man doesn't mean that we have to continually lump it forwards every time, like we have done for the last couple of seasons. I'm with Len Brennan, we need to buy a decent striker, with pedigree, if that's £2m+ then so be it. If we can get someone in with quality then MM and ME can be pleased with their transfer business. We look very lightweight up front and all know McGoldrick is as fragile as glass.

It was a good match to watch last night. Thought our Academy guys were impressive, esp Flynn Downes .

shakytown, imo Chambers has never looked comfortable on the ball - no amount of fist pumping can convince me he is good enough to play at this level. I'm sure he's a nice bloke and all, but we have better options, unfortunately he'll be one of the first on the team sheet under MM

Hopefully all these niggly injuries can clear up in time for August - things shaping up nicely if everyone is fit.

The cherry on the cake would be a quality striker. Investing or being too tight on that vital part of the team could be the difference betwen a good season and a mundane season. We have creative players but they and we need that 20 goal striker.

Seem to be divverring again, when ideal time for new signings is wasting away

No chance Reading paid £3m for Bodvarsson. He just sounds bitter about missing out. Should've just got him signed up when we had the chance. We can't keep waiting for players to move on before bringing players in every time and risk losing our top targets. Pitman's a good player so it's quite obvious that he would've found a deal elsewhere before the start of the season.

The first 5 minutes of the first game looked a bit ominous, lots of high long balls which got returned and we looked a bit shaky. As it progressed Didz came into it more and he began to show his class. Garner also looked a different class and we were unfortunate to go behind.
We then began to dictate via Didz and deserved the win. Garner took his goals well and I agree that the academy players played really well.
Monty should have scored from his first touch!
Sears looked really sharp and I even saw Cole Scuse around the Posh penalty area!

It's simple; we need quality replacements for both Berra and Murphy. Ideally they should be younger players on permanent signings with Webster being the model.

The proof is in the pudding friendlies are for fitness as the great man was so fond of saying last season. He has a long way to go to win me round there's a lot of water under the bridge since the embarrassment of the fa cup!! So many bad performances over the last 3 seasons silky football is not in McCarthy's vocab so time will tell. This the first time since I've supported town that I'm not that excited about the start of the season!! I normally think we can we the league but not this season mark me down I'm just being honest.
