Town midfielder Andre Dozzell and his England team-mates defeated Portugal 2-1 in this afternoon's final in Gori, Georgia to win the European Championships at U19 level for the first time.

Dozzell, 18, returned to the starting line-up, having missed the semi-final after picking up a hip injury in the final group game, and played the first 77 minutes before being replaced.

England took the lead through Aston Villa’s Easah Suliman in the 50th minute, however Chelsea’s Dujon Sterling netted an own goal on 56 to level the scores.

The Young Lions found themselves under pressure after the Portuguese equaliser but Manchester City’s Lukas Nmecha grabbed what proved to be the winner on the break on 68.

England held out in the closing stages despite being reduced to 10 men when Fulham’s Tayo Edun was dismissed for a second yellow card.

Dozzell will be pleased with his performances at the tournament, playing a deeper role than has been the case in the Town first team, and will hope to take his form into the domestic season when he returns to the Blues.

carsey added 23:15 - Jul 15 Sorry if it annoys some people but I'm in the McCarthy won't play him camp for any number of reasons but mainly because he will claim he is too young and inexperienced when what he really means is he isn't a hoof ball player. He is clearly a talent and one who the club should be looking to build a team around. If we aren't careful he may disappear to another club where his abilities are more appreciated. As always I hope I'm proved wrong and to those who disagree - fair enough but that's my opinion.

Aaron Ramsdale played one FA Cup game for Sheffield United against the ramshackle Orient side that finished bottom of the league. Jay Dasilva has played 10 games on loan to Charlton in League One. Easah Suliman of Aston Villa is still waiting for his Championship debut, but did play nine games on loan to Cheltenham Town in League Two. Marcus Edwards played fifteen minutes of a League Cup tie against Gillingham when they were already 5-0 up. Only Ben Brereton (Nottingham Forest) and Ryan Sessegnon (Fulham) have played more games in the Championship. And this stat blog has Andre Dozzell down as the seventh most played player before his eighteenth birthday. Ahead of Wrigh, Wark, Bramble, Darren Bent and Dyer. I'm not a fan of Mick's general policy with youth, but he's doing the right thing with Andre Dozzell.

This is a good news story - well done Andre & England. Those using it to have a dig at MM - poor taste, wrong story. Also stupid as Andre has played more than most in the squad at a higher level and his own father who knows more than most of us is happy with his progress and how he is managed. Second point those stating he gave the ball away twice etc, wow, how negative, footballers even Mesdi do not have 100% pass completion. Marcus added 07:17 - Jul 16 I know people like to find any excuse to lament Mick, however he's doing a good job protecting Andre. Young players are prone to burning out if too much pressure is put on them. Ease them into the first team, give them experience watching games from the bench and playing a few minutes. It's not just about ability but also knowing where the player is psychologically. While personally question a lot of his tactical and decisions and team selection, the one thing I don't doubt is his man management ability. Some of our previous managers had really poor management skills and we had non-stop stories of dressing room havoc, it's clear this problem is no longer an issue. While we all want to see a team full of our own youth developed players we must respect this takes time.
