Town Sign Wolves Defender Iorfa On Loan
Friday, 14th Jul 2017 16:38

Town have announced the signing of Wolverhampton Wanderers right-back Dominic Iorfa on loan for the season.

The 22-year-old England U21 international underwent a medical at Portman Road this afternoon before tying up the formalities relating to his move.

"I'm happy to be here because Ipswich is a good club," Iorfa told iFollow Ipswich.

"I spoke to the manager a few days ago and he told me about the plans for the season; he really sold it to me.

"The moment I spoke to him, I couldn't wait to get here and get started. He basically just told me that he wanted to get me on board, and he told me what positions he plans to use me in.

"I can play right-back and centre-half as well. He's confident that we can have a good season and push for the play-offs.

"He's assembled a good squad and I think things are looking promising for the club."

Manager Mick McCarthy added: “I’m thrilled to have got Dominic. He is very athletic, has got great pace and can play at centre-half as well as right-back and is equally good in both roles.

“With the defenders we already have here in the squad and with Dominic coming in, we have really good options in that area.”"

Southend-born Iorfa began his career with his hometown club but left the Shrimpers for Wolves - then managed by McCarthy - aged only 15.

The 6ft 4in tall full-back, who can also operate at centre-half, spent time on loan at Shrewsbury in the 2013/14 season before breaking into the first team at Molineux midway through the following campaign.

Capped by England at U18 and U20 level in addition to his 13 games for the U21s, Iorfa has made 91 starts and two sub appearances for Wolves, so far without scoring a senior goal.

Despite having been a regular throughout last season and featuring for the England U21s at this summer's European Championships, Iorfa, who is contracted until the summer of 2019, was left out of the Wolves squad which travelled to Austria for a pre-season training camp earlier this week.

Earlier in the summer, Derby were claimed to be eyeing a move with Iorfa, who was said to be valued at £4 million, while more recently Leeds have been linked.

Iorfa's father, also Dominic, is a former international winger with Nigeria. At club level he had spells with QPR, Peterborough and Southend among many others.

Town have been on the lookout for another right-back to compete with Jordan Spence having allowed Josh Emmanuel to join Rotherham on loan earlier in the week in order to gain first-team experience.

Regarding Emmanuel, McCarthy added: “Josh needs to be playing first-team games every week and hopefully he will do that at Rotherham. “He will gain a lot from the experience and come back to us a better player for it.” "

On Tuesday former Millwall right-back Shaun Cummings played in the friendly against Southend but the signing of Iorfa is likely to end the Blues' interest in the one-time Reading defender.

The addition of another player who can play as a right-sided centre-half, joining skipper Luke Chambers and Adam Webster in the squad, could have some bearing on Steven Taylor's future at Town.

The former Newcastle man is currently training with the Blues with a view to winning a contract having been on a short-term deal last season.

Meanwhile, the Royals have confirmed the signing of Town target Jon Dadi Bodvarsson from Wolves on a three-year deal.

So,MM is able to use his connections to get an England U23 International to Portman Road and somebody tries to slander the guy? Unbelievable and disappointing. Some supporters won't be happy regardless of what MM & ME are able to do for ITFC.

The feeling I get was he was well 'received' by the fans at Molineux in the 2015/16 season BUT last season didn't go so well, just like Skuse don't expect any goals (he hasn't scored in his career). As said will probably be a back up to Spense, if not good enough for Wolves 1st team why should he be here!

All the best though while your here.

on second thoughts who knows whether he will be back up to Spense...obviously not good enough at Wolves to start.

Good news im happy with Loan signings as long as they are for a season.
We seem to be building a fairly solid squad looking forward to the CUFC and Charlton games.

We need to understand that loanees are a fundamental part of football in this league. We might not like it but in years to come our team, and others too, will be packed with mercenaries who will move around at the whim of their agents following the money. Players for hire will be the order of the day. Why bother with contracts when you can recruit from a pool of available players on a short term loan basis. Of course any deal can be extended if agreed between the parties and seen to benefit everyone. I, for one, would welcome the introduction of rules seriously limiting the signing of loan players so that young players get a chance to play.

He sounds a very good footballer and we certainly needed another right-back. If he is rated at £4M, I can only think he will be first choice which will frustrate Spence who seemed odds-on to be our right-back after how McCarthy indicated he is so far ahead of Emmanuel. Competition can only be good.

Like some other posters, I think there must be a hefty loan fee otherwise why would Wolves loan such a good player to us? I am generally against spending big money on loans rather than investing in young players for ourselves, as if they come good then we can rarely sign them (Huws being the exception). I think to really improve medium term we need investment in young players, and Marcus Evans surely agrees hence his 5-point plan states: ‘To make annual investment funds available to purchase players in the early stages of their career and to assist in their development'.

Cracking signing. Spence must be concerned about his place in the starting XI. Mick's discussion with him about playing CB worries me though...hope this doesn't mean Webster will be sold.

Sounds a good signing - i am really not convinced by Spence
Full back is so important in todays game - lets hope he has some quality on the ball to add to the athleticism

How anyone can write anything negative on this I don't really understand - lets break down the article.

* 6'4 - adds height.
* Can play RB + CB
* Will battle Spence for RB meaning NO MORE Chambers at RB.
* ALREADY aged 22 started 91 games at this level.
* Coupled with this, 12 caps for England at U21.
* Valued at £4 mil.
* Allows Josh Emmanuel to develop for at least half a year, if not a whole season.

However, some people still LOVE a glass half empty, dreary, awful perspective on life.

For all the moaners, what should we have done instead please? Be subjective. Who should we have signed? How many times have you seen this lad and can you please enlighten me as to all of his weaknesses? Many thanks.

our loans out really return, this guy McCarthy most likely thinks will be a good target man and play him up front knowing his previous tactics.Welcome wish you all the best.

Classic Mick signing - a giant full back! Agree competition for Spence is good though so probablya good bit of business. Assuming two players for every position and the better youth players will now get their chances in an attacking footballing team (🐷🛫) (Dozzel, Nydam etc) is that us done now or do we need one more quality striker (Marquis?).

Dear Father Christmas

Understand I'm early with my letter, but feel i've been a good boy so far this year.

Mick McCarthy and his god awful football has made my visits to Portman Road become a thing of the past.

I believe I speak for many a devoted Town fan when I ask for a change of managerial guidance for my beloved football club.

Mr Christmas we don't play on your busiest day of the year, I also believe that your football knowledge is somewhat limited, but if you were to take 'the reins' 😉 taking my nieces to a game would be a possibility.

Please leave Mick, credit where it's due (Tyrone Mings & playoff semi) but in all honesty your currently unseccessful football, is far from entertaining and your arrogant attitude ruins players.

Time for change, if not, League 1 in 12 months

Is Mick McCarthy still in charge?

Mickroyal... how many youngsters can you name that have gone out on loan and come back better players under MM? I am struggling here to think of any!

If McCarthy is still incharge it doesn't matter who is signed permanent or on loan the style and tactics remain the same.
Every season I hope I'm wrong but long before Christmas I realise I was an idiot.

Jas. Don't think ne1 particularly disagrees that 2 many loan players are not the answer. But get real. The fact is that Emmanuel was gonna be sent on loan to gain much needed experience. He's got ability and potential but not ready just yet as was shown at times last season ( for instance have away a few rash penalties). So with him out on loan don't u think getting a loaner in rather than signing a permanent rb makes sense? Not just any player neither, but a much better player than either of our other rb options. Don't get me wrong, I like Spence, he's a good player but this guy is better. And certainly better than ending up with Chambers at rb.

He seems to be highly rated.... who knows, with Chinese mega bucks to spunk up the wall and 5 new defenders alongside what o expect to be a conveyer belt of de rigueur foreign coaches and a plethora of 'names' he might not get anywhere near the first team at Wolves again....

If he enjoys his time.......? 2 years left on his contract one of which is about to spent with us.....

"can't pass, control a ball, gets it stuck under his feet etc. He's been hopeless since the first season kj bought him in. Could probably give Usain Bolt a run for his money though"
Oh dear!

The lads got good potential, theirs no questioning that, however, if he was that good why are wolves letting him go???? I would have personally like to have seen Josh and Spence compete for the RB slot and used this money (however much it is) on another striker. MM's record for bringing the youths through is worse than woeful. Kenlock is the only one of any note to get games on a semi regular basis and it will be interesting to see if he displaces one of the Dino's 'favs' Knudsen. There's no rights or wrongs on here, just opinions! and like all other matters, time will tell!
