Former Millwall Full-Back Cummings Featured in Friendly
Thursday, 13th Jul 2017 19:29
TWTD understands former Millwall right-back Shaun Cummings played for the Blues in Tuesday’s behind closed doors friendly against Southend at Playford Road which Town won 4-1. The 28-year-old is a free agent with his Lions contract having been up at the end of last season.
Cummings is understood to have featured in the second half of the game in which Blues boss Mick McCarthy fielded a different team in each half.
The Hammersmith-born full-back came through the youth system at Chelsea and went on loan to the MK Dons and West Brom while with the Premier League champions.
Having been unable to break into the first team at Stamford Bridge, Cummings moved on to Reading, where his former Chelsea academy coach Brendan Rodgers was then manager, in the summer of 2009.
After six years at the Madejski Stadium in which he was a regular in the team which topped the Championship in 2011/12, 6ft tall Cummings moved on to Millwall in the summer of 2015.
The three-times-capped Jamaica international made 53 starts and two sub appearances for the Lions, scoring three times, and was part of the squad which returned to the Championship via May's League One play-offs, although he missed the second semi-final against Scunthorpe and the 1-0 final victory over Bradford at Wembley due to a hamstring injury.
Cummings failed to return to Millwall for the start of pre-season training at the end of last month having rejected the offer of a new contract.
Town are need of another right-back as cover for Jordan Spence with Josh Emmanuel having been allowed to join Rotherham on loan earlier today in order to gain first-team experience.
It's understood that the delay in confirming Emmanuel's move to the Millers related to the lack of back-up to first-choice Spence.

Conflicted here. Spence is clearly the preferred choice as starting right back, so any other RB at the club will be on the bench at best. Emmanuel looks like he'll be playing at Rotherham so going on loan is best for him & we'll need back up in the short term.

Wouldn't be a bad signing as short term cover, also ensures Chambers will stay in his central role.
rayman_10 added 19:38 - Jul 13
At least Chambers wouldn't be the back up option for Spence which is the most positive news.
Out and out right back on a free as back up. Spence was the same last year and I thought he played well. So hopefully this guy will be an adequate back up if this happens.

Decent at league 1 level so lets see.

To be honest, dont know to much about the lad. However, least the penny may have dropped about putting round pegs in round holes. Thank God for that, at last.

I'd prefer to see us putting all our efforts into developing Emmanuel at Ipswich Town rather than lose him for possibly a whole season then bringing a right back in a day after.

Good move. Emmanuel will only learn by playing, not sitting on the bench!!
yungblue added 20:08 - Jul 13
Would definitely take him on a one year deal, would rather he be sitting on the bench every week and one of our own for the future playing week in week out and L1 gaining experience, does this show that Kenlock will play week in week out otherwise he would be sent out?

Know nothing but Rodgers knows a decent player, Lions wanted to keep him so why not

There's more GOINGS than CUMMINGS unfortunately!!!! Small squad??? we might have to enter the 7 aside league at this rate!!!!! Overhead height will not apply, obviously!

If I'd spotted that I'd have checked it out last night! Apologies for missing your post.

We are supposed to have a commitment to developing youth. What happens in practice?
We have a talented youngster (Emmanuel) so instead we play a centre-back (Chambers) in that position. Then when that doesn't work, we go off and sign a free (Spence) to play there. Then we send the talented youngster out on loan and sign an aging mediocrity on a free to cover for the free that we signed. Good, isn't it? We could just play the talented youngster and use the money to sign a replacement for Berra or Murphy, but that would be too simple.

Sounds ok for cover, at least Millwall offered him a contract, offer him a year then get Josh back from Rotherham, sorted.
Taricco_Fan added 21:56 - Jul 13
Jesus wept. Why farm Emmanuel out on loan only to replace him with a League One player? The best place to develop our young players is right here at Portman Road.

A good player, will be challenging Spence. Wouldn't be surprised if he overtakes him. Emmanuel should come back from loan a better player too.

Scored Millwall's winner against Leicester in the Cup last season, iirc.

I'm not sure Cummings would be just back-up to Spence, as we know McCarthy values experience and he might be more solid defensively than Spence.
Cummings is 28 though so another reminder of Evan's 5-point plan:
‘To make annual investment funds available to purchase players in the early stages of their career and to assist in their development’

"Having been unable to break into the first team at Stamford Bridge" must be the most-used phrase in football these days LOL

I've got a feeling this guy is going to be the linchpin of our Carabao Cup team!

Those moaning about a L1 player, where did we sign Bart from again? McGoldrick was playing gor Coventry in L1, Sears for Colchester
He's cover to allow Emmanuel to play regularly, because Josh is simply not good enough yet to play regularly in the Championship.
Quite ya moaning!
