Garner Nets Twice as Blues Beat Southend in Friendly
Wednesday, 12th Jul 2017 16:56

Goals from Joe Garner (2), Freddie Sears and Conor McKendry saw the Blues to a 4-1 victory over Southend United in a behind closed doors friendly at Playford Road this afternoon.

As at Drogheda on Saturday, boss Mick McCarthy fielded a different XI in each half of the match.

Tommy Smith and Monty Patterson, who had been given additional time off having recently been on international duty with New Zealand, were both involved, as was Kevin Bru, who missed last week's training camp in Ireland after being injured and is available for transfer.

Garner, who netted Town’s final goal in the 5-0 win in Ireland, his first for the club since joining from Rangers last month, scored his brace before the break before Dru Yearwood pulled a goal back for the Shrimpers to make it 2-1 at half-time.

Sears, who netted twice against Drogs, and McKendry were on target in the second half.

The Blues are next in action at Peterborough United next Tuesday when they will play two games of 60 minutes against Posh, the first starting at 7pm.

Much as pre-season is largely irrelevant, I am hoping we give Freddie Sears more chances to actually play up front this season. He started finding the net again towards the end of the last campaign (4 in the last 7 league games, 7 in 9 now if you want to count friendlies) and I'd like to think if we actually give him the opportunity, he might rediscover the scoring run he had when we first brought him in.

The big difference between this pre season and last is the fact that we have scored 9 goals this time!

I'm sorry but none of the goals in preseason count because they haven't been scored against Barcelona.

I've said it before and I'll ask again. Why are ITFC not selling tickets for the Peterborough PFS. not too difficult a question is it????

Behind closed doors allows the playing of unregistered trialists.

That is the shortest match report I've ever seen. Was anyone even watching? Anyway, Garner looks absolutely brilliant with three goals in two matches. He could be the star of our season.

Pre season is purely fitness I agree but for strikers getting goals is always good. Results don't matter too much - I seem to remember Newcastle getting beat 6 pre season at Orient a few years ago and they then got 100 pts and won the league!

COYB!

9 goals in 2 games. That's what the game is about Mick, putting the ball in the net. Stop worrying about the other team and how they are in a false position and so much better than everyone thinks just score more goals than them and we will win. Please give your boys the freedom to attack and I think we actually may have what it takes.
