U23s Draw at Felixstowe and Walton
Saturday, 8th Jul 2017 21:05 by James Ager

Town's U23 side drew 0-0 with Felixstowe & Walton at the Goldstar Ground on Saturday afternoon in a game that marked the opening of the Seasiders' new clubhouse.

Former Town chairman David Sheepshanks officially opened the new facilities and the game itself was preceded by a minute's applause for Bradley Lowery, the six-year-old Sunderland fan who died from a rare form of cancer yesterday.

The home side should have opened the scoring early on when Stuart Boardley's freekick from the right was knocked down for Craig Jennings, but the striker poked the ball wide from six yards out.

Felixstowe keeper Danny Crump did well to claw Declan Daniels's header away soon after, and the Blues striker then hit a left-foot volley across the face of the home goal but none of his team-mates were able to open the scoring.

As the half-time whistle approached, Joe Francis - who spent a spell on trial with Town back in the 2006/07 season - hit a curling shot just past the upright and then Luke Ingram's effort from close range at the back post was well blocked by Michael Crowe.

On 54 a dinked left-sided cross from Henry Barley found Brett McGavin at the back post but Crump was out quickly to preserve his clean sheet, and then Corrie Ndaba missed the target after connecting with McGavin's corner.

Sub Luca Vega did well to prevent Scott Chaplin getting a clear sight of goal soon after but a draw was probably a fair result with neither keeper tested much during the second-half.

Dobra caught the eye with some neat touches and skill during his time on the pitch, while Daniels was lively up front and will count himself unlucky not to have scored his second goal in as many days.

The U23s are next in friendly action at AFC Sudbury on Wednesday evening, 7.30pm.

U23s: M Crowe (Hayes 46), Woolfenden (Ronan 46), Clements (Ndaba 46), McLoughlin (Cahill 63), Henry (Vega 46), C Smith (Woolfenden 74), Wilton (D Crowe 46), Dobra (Hughes 46), Daniels (Barley 46), Foudil (McGavin 46), Folami (McLoughlin 74). Att: 650.

Was there at the game. Good performances from McLoughlin and Vega who both stood out. Felixstowe and Walton seemed more incisive in attack though so probably should have won the game 1 or 2-0.
