Murphy Set to Leave Newcastle With Boro Eyeing Loan Move
Monday, 12th Jun 2017 10:37

Former Town striker Daryl Murphy has confirmed he is likely to leave Newcastle United this summer and TWTD understands recently-relegated Middlesbrough are keen to sign the 34-year-old Republic of Ireland international on a season-long loan.

Murphy, who came on as a sub for Ireland as they drew 1-1 with Austria in Dublin yesterday, says Rafa Benitez has told him he can move on.

“I spoke to him last week about my future and he thanked me for what I had done and said they were going to listen to a few offers. I said, ‘That’s fine’,” the Waterford-born frontman said.

“I always knew I had been brought in there to do a specific job, to help the club to get promoted. I had no illusions that I was going to be starting for Newcastle in the Premier League if we got up.

“Last season was good, though. Rafa managed everything very well. We had a lot of big name players and maybe if it had been another manager he wouldn’t have got the best out of them as there would have been players sulking.

“But he used every player in the squad at the right time so everybody was fighting for a place. When the other strikers got injured, I knew I had to produce the goods for him, and I did, getting three goals in three games.

“I scored six times and felt I deserved my medal whereas before, when I was at Celtic, we won the Cup but I barely featured and didn’t take a medal then because I had not earned it. This time I played my part and I have Rafa to thank for that.”

Town are unlikely to be in the running to re-sign Murphy, who left Portman Road for a fee of £3 million in August, with wages almost certainly ruling out a fifth spell at Portman Road even if manager Mick McCarthy was keen to be reunited with the striker he initially signed when Sunderland boss.

However, Boro could well face opposition from other Championship clubs with bigger budgets.

I thought it was 3 million plus an extra 1 mil if they got promoted??

If bluearmy78 is right I'd happily spend the extra £1 million to bring him back.
Replace Daryl Murphy with Daryl Murphy !

I'm so bored with non stories on here, where are the signings we were promised? Yet another season of misfit loans and players off the unwanted list. What has happened to this great club of ours

We really should be trying to bring him back. I think he could get at least 15 goals in a full season and would really help out in what will most likely be a relegation battle! Mick IN, Evans OUT!

Still a great player at this level.
Would love to have him back.

He made the difference for Ireland yesterday with his strength and ability to retain the ball in attacking positions.

With Garner close to signing I think that would be our strikers sorted.

I doubt very much Murphy would want to return to us. He has easy access to flights from Newcastle to Ireland. His family have returned to Ireland, which is partly why he requested a transfer last season after n the first place. Murphys time with Town is done. Move on.

Re the additional million referenced above, the club has consistently denied that there was any truth in it since it first appeared last August.

Suppose if they deny the extra 1 million, it is another excuse as to why we dont spend anything

Don't want him back. Need to go forwards, not backwards. If we signed him we'd be doomed to hoofball again. And he had one freak season here. Other than that he was ok but no more. And you have to question a players motives when he asks for a transfer but now says he knew if they went up he wouldn't be likely to be kept there. Could only have been about money.

He was a great servant for the club and I hope he gets the chance to play regularly next season. However if the club were to show interest in any other 34 year old forward there would be a stream of critical posts here on TWTD.

The Green Un is saying that the fee for Garner is closer to 1 mil, I hope that isn't the budget already spent for the season!!

One minute it's "Boo let's stop signing these 34 year old journeymen on loan" and the next people are wetting their pants about bringing Murphy back. I don't agree he had '1 freak season' at all, if you watch football rather than look at his Wikipedia stats you'll appreciate he carried this side for most of McCarthy's time here and he was a massive loss last season.

I don't agree we should bring him back though, thanks for the memories but we need to move on and evolve our style into a team that tries to keep the ball. Signing Murphy, as good as he is at what he does is A) very short term and B) means another season on Chambers and Smith pumping aimless long balls in his vague direction.

We need to move on and build a footballing side around Bialkowski, Webster, Dozzell, Bishop, Ward.

Blues1 ... why do you keep saying we will be doomed to another season of hoofball regarding discussions about possible signings ? The reason we will play hoofball again next season is because that is how MM coaches his sides , he has done it for 20 plus years .
We spent a large amount of last season with no big target man up top but still continually played hoof football

Absolutely astounded that there are fans wanting him back ....if there was any sign that hoofball remains at our club it would be bringing Murphy back ......we may have got a top 6 place when he did brilliantly that one season but the discontent with the style of football has only be compounded in the last two years .......Murphy back would be a massive step backwards
England U20 world cups winners with barely a game in the premier to their name (bar a couple of notable exceptions) .....lets push the boat out and get one of them in here ....something to shout about ..........it doesn't justify our current style but it did make me smile that Fraser, maitlain niles and Berra were on international duty at the weekend and one of them won the World Cup ....thank goodness for Ipswich !! ......... people should understand that Murphy was another player under McCarthy who far too often was played out of his best and rightful position.

It still doesn't register with some through lack of understanding, or an attitude that anything is acceptable as long as a ball is kicked, the pie and pint is devoured - and all is well with them.
Next season will be no different because Ipswich Town will always have an element (as is obvious on TWTD ) of that kind of support.

Murphy did a good job for us, when played to his strengths - and still would.

...... anyone who thinks a million for Garner is good business is deluded.

Proof again this week that (as Sir Trevor Brooking has stated) 18 - 21 year olds have to be given the opportunity in the Championship at least, not excluding the Premiership.

There is good young talent in this Country - and at our Club - but under the likes of McCarthy will never be given the chance to prove themselves.
In his book, being able to run through a brick wall (proper bloke) is far more important.

he probably wants to stay in european football so will leave britain..

Been a great servant, but that ship has sailed now. If we re-signed him it'd be a massive step backwards. We need a player of his ilk, but not him. I'm adamant there will be better options out there than Joe Garner too.

cornishblue,Murphy didn't cause hoofball, McCarthy did, with players playing football and giving him the service there are still plenty of goals in Murphy. The fact that Murphy is no longer a town player is irrelevant Its down to McCarthy and he wont change .McCarthy has a mind set,
