Town Close to Confirming Garner Signing
Sunday, 11th Jun 2017 16:33

TWTD understands Town are close to confirming the signing of Rangers striker Joe Garner.

Reports that the Blues were moving for the 29-year-old in a £500,000 deal first surfaced in Scotland last month and we understand the frontman is due at Portman Road on Monday to complete the formalities of his move, signing a three-year deal.

Garner moved to Ibrox from Preston for £1.4 million last summer, when Town were also interested, signing a three-year contract.

The former England U16, U17 and U19 international scored 10 goals in 22 starts and 12 sub appearances during 2016/17.

While Garner was reportedly not out of Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha’s plans, the Portuguese manager is said to be looking to wheel and deal as he rebuilds his squad during the close season.

Garner started his career with his hometown club Blackburn Rovers but was unable to break into the first team prior to moving on to Carlisle, initially on loan, then Nottingham Forest, Huddersfield (loan), Scunthorpe (loan), Watford and Carlisle for a further loan spell before joining Preston in 2013.

While with the Lilywhites the 5ft 10in tall frontman scored a 20-minute second-half hat-trick as the Lancastrians beat the Blues 3-2 in an FA Cup third round replay at Deepdale in January 2014.

The following season Garner won the League One Player of the Year award as he helped Preston into the Championship via the play-offs.

The minute he signs he's a Blue and we have to back him and hope the move reignites his career.

On the face of it a player who used to be good, but is on the way down having failed to make the grade at Rangers. Only 10 goals in Scotland? At 5ft10 I suppose he will be more a replacement for Pitman than Murphy, but I expect Brett would have scored as many that that level. The idea of reigniting strikers careers rarely works, does it? I think many strikers do well at a young age but struggle more as they get older. I wish we would turn attention to signing quality young players.

Mr Milne indicated that he expects fans to start renewing season tickets when they see the summer signings. While I would wish Garner well, I suggest we will need a lot more investment than that to convince people.

Only had 3 good seasons, in League One. Not the most exciting signing ever, but better than nothing!

Any signing is a positive step in the right direction, lets face facts here, he can't be any worse in front of goal than what we had last season!! Not the target man i was anticipating though to suit our Dino's love of all things hoofball.
It's hard to find any enthusiasm at all at the moment with that dreaded still at the helm.

GO AWAY DINO

I've now done a bit more reading and he looks to be a player who'll struggle stay on the pitch - head butts, dangerous tackles, jokes that he's "misunderstood". Not the best CV, so just have to hope he's seen the light.
I bet McCarthy introduces him by saying he'll bring a much needed physicality up front.
A disappointing signing but let's hope he surprises us.

However good he may or may not be, it'll count for nothing unless we sign dynamic, box-to-box, creative midfielders. Our strikers were never the problem and haven't been during McCarthy' entire reign. We don't create enough chances, simple as...

Not a bad singing if he signs. However with Micks inevitable tactics, he isn't really a like for like replacement of Murphy.

He reminds me of a short Alan Lee. Will spend as much time on the floor as he does arguing with the referee. Bit too old for my liking. 3 or 4 years younger and would have been a useful addition.

Can't say I'm overly excited by this. Rangers fans not sorry to see him go apparently and if you can't cut it in Scottish football......!!!

Oh well time will tell one way or the other.

......... typical of what we can expect, but not what's required.

Totally uninspiring - not good enough for Scottish Football, so should tell us something.

BUT - in some eyes he'll be another world beater no doubt ..... !!!
