Spence Signs Two-Year Deal
Tuesday, 6th Jun 2017 16:38 by Dave Gooderham

Jordan Spence admitted it was an easy decision to commit his future to Ipswich Town after signing a two-year deal.

The right-back impressed last season after signing for the Blues in January — four months after he initially failed to impress on trial.

Spence wasted little time in showing what he could do, making 15 starts and wrestling the right-back spot from Josh Emmanuel and allowing Luke Chambers to move inside.

Out of contract at the end of the season, Spence said he had no doubt his future remained at Portman Road after manager Mick McCarthy made his intentions clear.

He told Ipswich Town’s You Tube channel: “It was an easy decision as soon as the manager made it clear he wanted me to stay.

“He showed a lot of faith in me by putting me almost straight into the side and then sticking with me — that gave me a lot of confidence.

“I had the confidence in myself that I could perform at this level, there is no doubt of that. But it was nice having it from such a well-established manager in the game.”

Spence previously spent time at West Ham, Bristol City and MK Dons and despite reported interest from other Championship clubs, the 27-year-old admitted he never entertained any other offers.

Talking to the ITFC official website, he added: “Obviously last season didn’t go as well as everyone would have hoped for here but I never thought we were in a relegation fight. We were always five or six points clear.

“The game at home against Newcastle showed what we are capable of. We coupled the work-rate and the tactical nous with the quality we have and it all came together.

“The place was rocking that day and we have to look to do that more often next season and compete at the top end of the Championship. It won’t be easy because it’s a tough league but we will be ready for the challenge.”

Important to point out that this is NOT a signing. Just a contract extension. He had a contract. It expired. It's been extended by two years.

A steady player with plenty of experience. It would have been foolish not to sign him up.

Excellent news, but why only 2 years?

Yes he's a promising young player, it's good he's signed up, and hopefully chambers goes nowhere near right back ever again!

But from what I saw last season josh Emmanuel is a better player. Josh has so many qualities and would probably like to know why he was dropped after man of the match performances! Won't have done his confidence much good (poor management by MM)

Josh could probably play in a few different positions too, which may well help him get a start.

Agood signing. Has the ability and desire to go forward. Articulate and loads of common sense. Could prove to be a talent for other clubs to poach so enjoy him while he is here.

As Jas has said, this isn't a signing. This is a contract extension. Brilliant news though, he did a great job for us last season.

Good news. Now need to sign Huws and another forward looking creative midfielder. After that a new striker. I hear that Danny Ward has gone to Cardiff and Watkins to the budgies....... is that correct????

Ok but nothing has changed still a carry on from last season, we won't get no one special to come here and the main problem won't leave, same p!ss poor pre season, same tight arse Evans, same bottom six, half empty stadium, whats to look forward to?.

KiwiBlue2: Watkins has signed for Norwich. I don't think Ward has signed yet for Cardiff, though looks likely. Another one of our targets (Sean Maguire) has also signed for Preston. Personally thought we'd land one of these 3 this transfer window, so gutted. Hope we don't end up with Samuel, as simply don't rate him (and his performances to date have been awful). Moore looks fit, but he's beaten far too often given his size and strength.

I know it's early days in the transfer window, but not looking forward to who we are going to bring in. gK and defence we seem fine, but we could do with two strikers (one to replace Murphy). MCGoldrick seems made of glass and we can't rely on him all season. Pittman looks almost certain to leave. Sears hasn't looked the same since spending so much time on the wing. Could have done with signing Watkins and Ward. Looked at the budgies comments on Watkins, they don't even know how he'll get in their team!

How about getting a proven goal scorer whose career has stalled in last 12 months and might fancy a challenge? It would be even better if he was a local boy who loves the club, has a point to prove here & signing him would be see the return of a positive feel to Portman Road.

Offer £5m and sign Jordan Rhodes...

PS-I know it won't happen but I've only just woken up, have a day off & sun is shinning so I'm trying to be positive!

Wit the signing/contract extension of Spence we have our defence pretty much sorted early on & it is relatively decent to be fair. Spencer & Emmanuel are both young natural right sided full back, who like to get forward, have pace & can adapt as wing backs. On the left side we have a similar but stronger set up with Kenlock (who I think will be a top player) & Knudsen who is not as bad as often made out on here. Then we have Chambers, a real leader, back in the centre where he belongs alongside a much experienced Tommy Smith, both solid no nonsense upper Championship level defenders. Then we have the huge potential of a fit again Webster, back in the mix with his ability to play football out of defence, if given the opportunity. Like the full backs, we have centre halves who are well capable of adapting to a 3 at the back system if/when required. We need to sign another centre half as cover & I wouldn't be against giving Taylor a contract based on certain criteria of fitness, as he would be excellent at this level if he could put his injuries behind him - still young enough for a centre half.
As others have said, this signing also puts to bed the Chambers at right back experience, which can only be a positive.
The last piece of the defensive puzzle to gladen my hear would be hearing that Bart has signed a new 5 year contract.
On to the more pressing problems of midfield & the forward line then ...

Sadly we seem to be stuck with the same useless manager so we will have to suffer another season of mindless rubbish football and third rate leftovers from other clubs. how low can we sink??????

Pleased for us and for Spence. Lets build on youth without stifling natural ability.

Am I the only one on here that is under whelmed with this signing? He is ok, but just that. Never going to pull up any trees and to be fair if we want to compete at the top of the Championship we need better full backs than this.

He was steady, nothing more. But then again its another freebie. Nothing will change this summer, nothing. It will be more of the same. Owner and manager going for cheap.

ZZzzzzzz...

Reasonably happy with this - but, as others have pointed out, it's just a contract extension.
Looks like he could develop into a useful player - if he's given the chance, of course.....

not knocking the player but cant get over excited ,he was already a team member ,and the team for whatever reason did not do near enough to achieve anything except narrowly avoid relegation. The team needs adding to ,with some quality ,and certainly need a goal scorer AND a manager that can get a team playing in such away that a striker gets service [other than hoof and hope ] Obviously the ''chat '' has been had , and McCarthy is going nowhere so I really cant much in way of any change .

I like this chap as from what I saw last season it looked like he can actually play football and can pass the ball, his also quick and has good energy. It might be worth a punt moving him up as a winger to see how he progresses, with this option, it allows Emmanuel to play and it will keep Captain Calality Chambers away from full back.
