Town Linked With Move for Rangers Striker
Wednesday, 24th May 2017 00:57

Town have been linked with a move for Rangers striker Joe Garner.

According the Daily Express, the Blues are ready to make a £500,000 approach for the 29-year-old.

Garner, who moved to Ibrox from Preston for £1.4 million last summer when TWTD understands Town were also keen, is said to be in Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha’s plans, however, he might be tempted to sell as he looks to raise cash in order to rebuild his squad during the close season.

Reports elsewhere claim the Glasgow giants have circulated a list of available players to clubs in England.

Former England U16, U17 and U19 international Garner scored 10 goals in 22 starts and 12 sub appearances during 2016/17 having signed a three-year deal.

Garner started his career with his hometown club Blackburn Rovers but was unable to break into the first team prior to moving on to Carlisle, initially on loan, then Nottingham Forest, Huddersfield (loan), Scunthorpe (loan), Watford and Carlisle for a further loan spell before joining Preston in 2013.

While with the Lilywhites the 5ft 10in tall frontman scored a 20-minute second-half hat-trick as the Lancastrians beat the Blues 3-2 in an FA Cup third round replay at Deepdale in January 2014.

The following season Garner won the League One Player of the Year award as he helped Preston into the Championship via the play-offs.

I would take him. I'm a fan of the lad from what I've seen before.

He has that bite and tenacity that Mick likes in a player, but whenever I've seen him he's acted like a petulant little child if decisions don't go his way. 1 player, that if you can wind him up, completely loses his head. Gets booked quite a lot too. Real little stress head.

Actually rate this link. Feel he would fit better into the team than a returning Murphy, Dom Samuel or Craig Mackail-Smith. So, nice to be linked to someone like this.

Aye I know of Mr. Garner & his CV, but while not being completely dismissive I still have to say: "SORRY! not overly interested" Because neither what someone did ages ago i.e. between 2003-2006! in various English U- National teams, nor what they at the now fairly advanced age of 29 did against us in the by MM despised & almost forfeited English FA Cup 3 loooong years ago in freakin' 2014!, nor having just come of having scored a "hatful" of goals in awesome Scotland particularly including 3 in their domestic Cup tournaments, no longer here anno 2017 personally impresses me to ANY noteworthy degree!!! ........... But speaking of them über sleep deprivating ITFC 'Fairy-Transfer-Tales' ehmmmm just out of (ab)normal curiosity why haven't there been any "Town linked with 'THE BEAST'" rumors I wonder? :-) lol

Also known as Mr. Jon Parkin, appearance wise he might nowadays look more than a STOUT middle-aged gray-haired BAKER than an active football player!(no offense to any real bakers out there of course! lol), and only slightly faster on The 50 Yard Dash Test than say our very own "in a different class" Roadrunner clone 'Snooze Doggy Douglas'!
**HOWEVER** he still have quite remarkable ball skills as well as stamina for a man his age and XL size doesn't he -- for instance in the FA Trophy final this past weekend he not only single-handedly MADE both goals but also overall was a pretty constant dangerous presence up front over the entire long 95 minutes while especially having several fine receiving the ball with ones back to the goal then turning-180-degrees-to-shoot-on-target plus a couple of extremely neat heel-flick-on passes with the latter otherwise mostly being seen from players earning 1000 times more than he does! -- and generally I believe its fair to characterize him as STILL at age 35 overall being surprisingly physical tough both on the ground & in the air and simply absolutely above-average clinically inside the box ..... at the jaw-droppingly über awesome Vanarama level we mustn't forget, of course! :-) smile :-)

Ohhh but perhaps most importantly imho: He Parkin is one of those strikers who is much much more in Marcus "Scrooge" Evans **preferred** price range (compared to the likes of Mr. Joe "ONLY 6 GOALS IN 44 GAMES!!! in last Championship season at Preston" Garner) isn't he now, as I believe we could get the somewhat PROPER BLOKEISH 'The Beast' for say the equivalent of 30 cases of premium lager + a couple of boxes of Doritos! :-) lmao

Offer 500k for a player who cost them nearly three times that just a year ago... sounds about right for ME.

He may be worth considering, but at 5ft 10in would still leave us short of a target man. Perhaps Garner is more a replacement for Pitman if he moves on.

Sign him.

Not a bad link. If you've watched garner he wins everything in the air despite his height. Like Chris Martin of derby. Still think Pitman is a better player and I'm sure if he's given time in the role of a target man he can do a job. Or better yet play the ball on the f*****g floor!'n

We already have a second half hat trick player by the name of Grant Ward !!!!!

If we'd got him 3 years ago, I'd have been happy, but 10 goals in a shocking league in Scotland doesn't do much for me.

Plus, WHY is Mick STILL here!?!?!?

Is our scouting system just players who have scored against us , must be hell of a list .
No better than Pitman and League 1 at best

1. Fee required.
2. Aged 29.
3. Probably on decent money at Rangers.
Three strikes & you're out!

So how does eminent journalist Mr Burns of the Express know that " The Championship" team are ready to make this bid?
An agent attempting to make some cash?
An " insider" at PR who deliberately runs off to this paper?
Is it just more keyboard tapping because there is so little for him to write about?
Just believe the news of who we have actually signed not the random mutterings of who we might!
Then when we do there is a reason to comment......one way or another !!

We have to set our sights higher... Most of the SPL is League Two standard. Go and buy Roger Marti from Levante, Joselu from Lugo, Angel from Zaragoza. All scored 20+ goals in the Spanish 2nd tier this season. Surely a better standard than SPL and probably fairly cheap to sign in comparison to the UK market. Let's do something different from signing the usual journeyman rubbish and try to improve. Just a thought.

I live in Scotland & Garner has been woeful in a very poor league. If we're going for a striker up North I'd go for Liam Boyce from Ross County & at the same time take their Captain Andrew Davies who has been a stalwart at the centre of defence

I agree with Lathers. All these links seem to show us as a club getting ready for the third tier and more of the same from MM.

Agree with EssexTractor: who knows the truth in the rumours anyway. Rumours are just that, rumours. Come back when we have actually signed anyone, until then everything is only speculation and we don't know anything about anything really.
Still, regarding the money, if we offer 500 000 for a player who cost 1.4 million a year ago, I feel that is a good piece of negotiating. Gives the club room to test the ground. No point in offering them loads of money straight away if the "seller" is prepared to go lower.
In another note: how about Filip Lesniak from Tottenham if they release him as they might do. Has anyone seen enough of him to know if he would be a good signing?

No thanks. Hardly set the world alight at this level with Preston. Plus if a team in Scotland want to get rid for half of what they paid just a year ago then that speaks volumes. Shocking standard.

Not for me - we need to be looking at players in the 22-27 age bracket.
