McCarthy Confirms Douglas Will Move on in Summer
Wednesday, 15th Mar 2017 14:11
Town boss Mick McCarthy has confirmed that midfielder Jonny Douglas will move on at the end of the season when his contract is up.
The 35-year-old joined the Blues two summers ago from Brentford on a free transfer and has made 51 starts and 10 sub appearances, scoring three goals.
“Dougie, when his contract comes to an end, there’s no doubt he’ll be leaving,” McCarthy said. “But he’s been a fabulous player for us, a great servant.
“And he’s been unlucky this year. I still go back to the goal he scored against Norwich and it was disallowed.”
McCarthy has previously confirmed that striker Leon Best wouldn’t play for him again and will leave the club in the summer as will midfielder Giles Coke, who has spent the whole campaign on the sidelines with a knee injury.

Hopefully MM will be in the same taxi. We new some new ideas and leadership
as we have a decent squad that hasn't been allowed to play football.
After 40yrs supporting the Town still in the non renew camp.

Hold on, hold on.
He's with where all our goals will be coming from, from the midfield (sarcasm).
How will we do without. Nooooooooooooo

Wow, that is a shock because he is "different class" according to Mick. Hope Mick is next to be out the door and take's Skuse with him!

I guess my idea of 'fabulous players' differs slightly from Mick's then...
Shame we had him probably a couple of years too late - he was still doing well for Brentford then, but his legs were already going when he arrived at ITFC. All the best to him though, he did his best.

Best news I've heard today

Always gave it his all but unfortunately a box-to-box midfielder isn't much good when the legs go and Brentford clearly knew what they were doing when they released him...playing him as a defensive mid has to go down as one of Micks's biggest mistakes. Don't really blame they guy for being useless in the role, he never claimed to be that player, but I think it's hard to disagree that we are a significantly worse team with him in the middle.

London Ben - agree with every word.

He is going but Mick is happy as he has Dave who can sit beside Skuse in our seven man defence.

Dreams do come true! Let now hope that Mick will follow him.

Douglas should have been used as a back up player to Skuse if anything, not a partner for the best part of 2 seasons. I think I speak for most of us when I say the criticism was never anything personal towards Douglas but as most have said on here a 35 year old does not have the legs to be the box to box player we were / are crying out for sadly.
I think the booing of him at QPR which again was not personal at Douglas but at what we all saw as a negative substitution in a game we should have been looking to win was the final nail in his coffin.

I genuinely wish the guy well BUT . . . what was the point of signing him in the first place!? We’ve ambled through game after game when he was in midfield, MM defended him to the hilt, saying this season’s squad was his best ever, then all of a sudden he gets dropped after some more creative players came along (that the fans had been calling for).
Doesn’t make a lot of sense, maybe the season ticket renewal letters and prices will appear on doormats soon and the club is doing everything possible to appease the fans!?
Although, let’s not forget JD scored more than Skuse has!
Good luck Dougie

OMG!, that must have been said with a heavy heart, and maybe a tissue as well!!! . Took your time on that one DINO, like most other discisions you have had to make!, you next maybe???, once you have saved us from relegation again, not forgetting that this time it's your own frigging mess that your clearing up.
No sympathy for Dougie, after all he has the very lovely Natalie to console him.

Oh no, how will town cope without him? Although he did score that goal against Norwich that was incorrectly ruled as offside! Good luck for the last year of your playing career Jonathan :)

Think Skues is slowing down now as well;but never was the quickest.
However, together with Chambo have never been out of the team if fit.
Skues is rarely subbed, and almost exclusively when injured, whereas cant recall Chambers ever coming off.Recall once that looked like Mick was trying to get him off ;.but he refused.Must have been when he was carrying an injury but wanted to battle on.
Two real blokes;but increasingly prone to mistakes.
It took a long time for Mick to see that Dougies legs had gone.Brentford sussed it 2 years ago thats why he was released.
Not one of Mr McCarthy's best signings, together with Coke and Best.Lets hope the Manager has also gone by next season,if not before.

The right sounds are coming out of the club in terms of people who are leaving
pennblue added 15:31 - Mar 15
It is a shame this did not work out. There is no doubt he was a great midfield player for Brentford, we just did not see the best of him.
BobbyBell added 15:32 - Mar 15
Oh NO!! This means our squad now only has 3 holding midfielders and not 4. I bet a replacement for Douglas will come quicker than Murphy's replacement.
Seriously though, what other Championship squad has 4 holding midfielders??
I wish the guy well but he should never have played so many games for us.
christiand added 15:37 - Mar 15
MM didn't help matters here, kept playing him because he was the one that signed him? No disrespect to JD, but he shouldn't have played enough games last season to trigger an additional year on his contract for this season. The Douglas of 5 years ago would've done a great job for us, the one we signed we could all see his legs had gone including Brentford, but not MM!!!
Bluebell added 15:42 - Mar 15
That will please a lot of people. Not surprising as he is 35 years old and his legs went over a year ago.
Not many players go beyond that age and most of that age can actually run!
Shineyblueknives added 16:32 - Mar 15
but what Mick doesn't say is that he will be playing every match between now and the end of the season because he is a top bloke and a proper midfielder...
goat_man added 16:42 - Mar 15
Please stop going on about that goal vs Norwich. Even if it had counted he would have finished the season with 1 goal and 0 assists, which still isn't anywhere near good enough.
Taricco_Fan added 16:46 - Mar 15
Nothing against the man but it's been painfully obvious - pretty much since he joined Town - that he's not up to the job. Age has caught up with him and he just doesn't have the legs to make any impact at this level. McCarthy persisted with Douglas as a first-team regular when it was clear to everyone else that he should have been dropped.
Hopefully Skuse will be moved on too as he's another very limited player that sucks the life out of our midfield.

Douglas, best and Coke - demonstrate how we need so much better if we are serious about promotion.
