Town boss Mick McCarthy says midfielder Teddy Bishop gave up his day off on Wednesday to do extra work on the training field at Playford Road as he looks to win back a place in the Blues first team. The academy product was left out of the 18 at Brighton on Tuesday despite travelling with the squad.

Speaking after that game, McCarthy said “the only way to get back up the pecking order is to break your nuts in training and to make sure you’re in my eyeline and TC’s eyeline so we’re going ‘Wow!’” and the 20-year-old appears to be trying to do exactly that.

“He didn’t have his day off on Wednesday, fair play to him, the message is there,” McCarthy said.

“He came in and did extra work, he was doing it today. And that’s the only way he’s going to get back in. That’s with everybody, good players but they’ve got to do that little bit extra.

“I feel for him because he’s been injured and when you get back and you’ve had the injuries - and I’m going to give him a slight little window of opportunity and excuse - what you don’t want to do is overtrain and then suddenly find you’re getting injured again.

“You’ve got to strike that happy balance between ‘Am I overtraining and I need to do that bit extra than the lads who have been playing for 30 games’. They’re all battle-hardened and they can all tolerate it.

“He’s a wonderful talent and I want him back in the team and I’m sure he wants to be be back himself.”

McCarthy added: “He’s had adoration when he’s been playing. I remember two years ago against Middlesbrough, he ripped them apart and Aitor Karanka was waxing lyrical about him, like everybody else was.

“And then he has had his injuries, but they’re gone, he’s got to get back in the team, and that’s pretty much [the same] for everybody.

“It’s made it harder still with Toums coming in and Emyr Huws coming in and Wardy playing in midfield, I think he’s been excellent.

“So there’s a real challenge for him, but that’s the challenge, you’ve got to scrap it out.”

cat added 17:10 - Feb 16 Injuries have clearly hampered his career so far, but a part of me feels if you are not in the MM mould of player or one of his favourites plays in your position then your career is likely to be stiffled. MM has proofed this without any doubt in my book, look at Chambers at RB, Sears out on the wing, Douglas, skuse, the list is endless. I also fear for the likes of Dozzel etc who are trying to break into the squad. This is one of a few reasons I believe MM has to go at the end of the season for the good of our club.

Mark added 17:50 - Feb 16 I could see Bishop playing in the Premier League or non-league, I am not sure which at the moment. He needs to keep a positive attitude, work his socks off, and show what he can do on a consistent basis.

CBMTOBWMMBG added 20:09 - Feb 16 so cat, you don't like MM. Fair enough. And the Sears, Douglas, Chambers examples are totally on the ball But how can state MM doesn't like/rate Bishop? He played him throughout 2014/5, hasn't rushed him back, states he rates him, is now trying to give a bit of an extra carrot/stick through the media to get him going. No bad thing surely?

tractorshark added 01:10 - Feb 17 I like Bishop, very good talent but let's be honest he's been below average this season. A shadow of 2014/15. We all think the world of him and we know what he can do but he's got to deliver at some point. Goodwill and adoration only goes so far. The injuries certainly haven't helped but I think in this instance Mick is probably right to deliver a bit of tough love. It's the same with Dozzell. We all know he's a talent but physically he struggles in the Championship. He's had one really good cameo and some fans insist he must play week in week out. He's not up to that yet. He gets bullied and the game passes him by. He doesn't just need experience, he needs strengthening. Look at Diagouraga, that's the sort of player he's up against. Dozzell will get there but he needs time and patience.
